Ever wonder how Honda/Acura part numbers are encoded? I didn't, but then I ended up researching some Honda parts swapology. http://www.mdxers.org/forums/65-mdx-faq/17072-how-acura-part-numbers-work.html Pretty simple once you know what's going on. The numbers/letters are arbitrary, but the pattern tells you approximately what you're looking at.

My dad in law does quite a bit of tractor restoration work. One of his tricks is to use an electrolytic process to get rust/paint/varnish/whatever off parts. Cross posting from the BMW thread cause not sure which is better So i've always had a dream of owning a BMW. They just look so drat sexy. I am moving to Australia for a year and am car shopping, so I've been looking at cars and stumbled on a 1994 bmw 318i. One fine rear end senorita. The rub is the owner describes the car as having a slight oil leak (which could mean its raining oil) and it already has 244,000 km (151,000 mi) on her. I am planning to do some serious long haul driving along the east coast of Oz and subsequently use the car in a everyday fashion once I settle down. Is this a clear no go? I know Bimmer parts are pricey and I'm not a wealthy person. But oh god i hope you say guys its safe! I want to own a BMW!!!!!!!! FYI: I am a automotive idiot. Full exploded diagrams and parts catalog plus alternator wiring info (ever wonder what the abbreviations for each pin mean? S? IG? L? B? D? M(FR)? wonder no longer) for alternators, generators, and starter motors. You can google most of the part numbers in these catalogs and crossref them to anything else and rebuild most alternators and starters on the bench for maybe 50 bucks in parts. e: I've learned far, far, far more than I ever wanted to know about Nippon Denso alternator parts compatibility over the last 3 days. If you need some weird alternator setup that isn't factory, I may be able to figure out how to put it together with a combination of junkyard parts, so bring it up in the chat thread or something, I dunno. How is tirebuyer.com for tires? I would do tirerack but the shipping is insane (130ish for 4 tires) while tirebuyer seems to be much more reasonable (30 for each tire).

Apec braking has a very useful search by size for brake rotor and drums. I have used it to find a rotor with a different diameter, thickness and offset to use different calipers than stock. http://www.apecbraking.co.uk/catalogue/size One drawback is since it is a UK site you have to figure out if the model is even available where you are. It also does not list the model of vehicle for the rotor found so I used a Google search of the part number to figure it out. If anyone knows of a similar site for North America vehicles I would like to know about it.

I suppose I should not be surprised that there isn't a Hyundai/Genesis thread here, but is there any forum out there that isn't hot garbage? I get there isn't the cult following of BMW and other brand fanatics who obsessively prune every detail and manual but yeah it ain't pretty in the online Hyundai community.

Hi guys, I really need a lot of help buying a car for the first time, used. As in, I'm ready to cry cause I don't know the first thing. I read the #9 used car shopping section in the first post, but I don't even know what anything said means. Long story short I don't know the first thing about cars, I barely learned to drive (no one I can practice with, very unconfident of the safety of me driving alone), and I also don't have any friends or any family members who can help me at all. I don't know what the diff drive gears do. I've never been more stressed about having to do something, besides getting my license itself this September. It feels fuckin awful I did ask some online friends who know a lot, I'll cite their tips and the trouble I'm having as well as my own criteria: 1. I live in SoCal, in the valley a little east of East Los Angeles. 2. I prefer a small car, but I'm now willing for anything. Friend says buying used SUVs is a good deal cause no one buys them here- I don't want one for many reasons but I'm willing 3. My budget is $6000 (my first car, I'm extremely inexperienced and will get in accidents) 4. Looking for no older than 2002-03.. Hoping less than 170,000 miles (b/c I'm aiming for Japanese car, they say mileage matters little to nothing?) 5. My daily commute to work is 13 miles each way. Never drove there myself tho. Also, I can't drive on the freeway, until I've practiced more. I know that I don't have to worry about knowing that much myself, that the safest is to take it to a pro mechanic when I test drive it. [list]-What else good first-car models are there to look for, besides Civic, Accord, and Corolla, that are common enough to have 1) inexpensive replacement parts 2) problems that are known like clockwork so they can easily spot them for me? -So I need to see the title and ask for maintenance records. I know carfax verifies the meter readings and different ownerships. Do I ask them "do you have the carfax?" Do I need to buy a Carfax account? I need the VIN right, do I run the check on the spot when I'm there? What else I need to ask to see? -I'll be going to random places for prospective buys. How do I know how to find a trusted mechanic? Do I google or just look for one? How much would they usually charge for an inspection like this? -I'm quite uneasy about not knowing anything. Can I read anything with simple lessons? Automotive for dummies? I can't get any hands on learning. Should I take auto classes? -What is a dealbreaker? Should I absolutely not go for any that's been in an accident? If I can accept very minor ones, what is the threshold of a minor accident? That's just what I can think of off the top. I'll take a printout of the criteria from the first post here with me to any car I check out. If anyone can give me a walkthrough, any advice, I'm extremely desperate for any. Don't stress too hard calrissian, cars are cool and fun! I got my own license a little bit late and was scared of driving for whatever reason - now I have a BMW, a temperamental old Jeep I take on terrible roads far out in the desert, and a modern insane Italian motorcycle with manual gears and life-altering traction control settings and do the maintenance on all of them myself. Also I now post on a small silly part of a dead gay comedy forum. All the cars I've bought/sold have been through craigslist, so the following thoughts apply largely to that but are useful otherwise: -You can ask for carfax reports but it's unlikely a private seller will have one because they cost $40. Used car lots or Carmax etc should have them (avoid small used car lots if you can, they can get pretty shady). If you're planning on looking at a lot of cars you can get a 60 day unlimited-search carfax account for $70. Avoid anything with a "salvage" title for your purposes (basically, these are cars that have been damaged in a way that the insurance company decided wasn't worth to fix). -If the seller has a big bundle of paperwork/receipts/maintenance records that is generally a good sign in my opinion. Most private sellers probably won't have this, but if they do it's a +1. Look for things like OIL SERVICE/TIRE ROTATION/FILTER REPLACEMENT/BRAKE PADS and other technical things. -It's not common knowledge, but in California someone selling a car has to provide the buyer with a current (within 90 days) SMOG certificate. This certificate means the car meets all of the emissions requirements. The certificate is electronically filed with the DMV when the vehicle is checked, so if the seller has done this it will just look like a generic printout/receipt from ABC SMOG CHECK 1234 AVENUE DATE (<90 days). Feel free to ask for it. If this has not been done, you will have to have the SMOG check done at (almost any) shop and pay $60-80 yourself before you can register/insure the car. This isn't a big deal but at the least you're out ~$60 and an hour or so. -When you're test-driving a car such as the ones you're looking at, it should be quiet. If it vibrates/shakes/rattles noticeably at stoplights, if it makes clunk/bang/pop/chunk noises when going over bumps or turning around corners, don't buy it. If the dashboard has any bright little lights that match these, don't buy it (these mean the car needs expensive work!). -Trust your gut feeling on the seller! I guess this depends a lot on your life experience and social awareness and all bets are off because Goons, but if you feel skeeved out and think this person might be hardselling you some garbage just lol and go test drive another Toyota because there are a billion of them. All prices on Craigslist are inflated at least $500-$1000 because haggling is expected and natural. I suck at haggling but I have still never paid the asking/listed price because just don't. -When it comes to insurance, you can get quotes from all the major places online but I really recommend going to your local AAA office - you can sit down and talk with an agent and they'll explain all of the coverage levels and you can ask dumb questions in person. I have asked a million dumb questions/added or removed multiple vehicles/gotten discounts and my agent knows me now. AAA coverage rules too because if you break down you get free towing and they have certified mechanic shops and just rule in general. You can also do a lot of the normal registration and renewal paperwork there instead of hellish DMV offices. -If by Valley-East-of-Los-Angeles you mean SGV, I know a good honest mechanic/shop in the Pasadena area who won't do you wrong. Oh also freeways are safer and easier than streets just stay out of my fastlane ok

2 weeks later- Hey guys thanks so much I decided to just be ballsy and proactive and safe and I trusted my gut bigtime on this private seller who happened to keep a super well-maintained 05 Civic with 145k miles for $5k, with Carfax with every service on it. Luckily owned by a body shop owner and a carhead. Everything part needing replacement was done pretty drat recent ago and fluids freshly changed, even the scratches on both bumpers removed and repainted before he sold me it. Everything looked solid from a mechanic's full inspection, I honestly got way lucky/I deserved it. I appreciate it you guys he payed for smog and literally freshly renewed registration stickers As for what my friend said about used SUVs, he ain't dumb he used to be a car flipper, but I don't know just what he meant. Maybe he thought that initial saving was really important to me. He was suggesting me way ugly stuff like a Nissan cube, toyota matrix, a '99 outback... Oh I forgot. Can I ask here advice on how to judge what to put on the DMV form for Selling Price? It was $4950... I'm not sure what insurance I'll get yet (I'll do it tomorrow) but I do have to tell my seller what I'm putting because he needs to put the same price on his form. He said there's ups and downs to putting it higher or lower, but I want lower cause I want to pay less. Like, low $2000s range or less.
