Infinite Jest didn't tie everything up in a bow, either.

I think this is Good.

The last dialogue is an echo of the way Problem Sleuth ended- cool quips and poses. You wanted a long capstone boss battle? You already had it. We've been watching it play out for all of Act 6. This is the epilogue.

We should probably just read Problem Sleuth again.

you can talk all you want about "eschewing narrative structures" but this doesnt even begin to touch on why, in their moment of triumph, the kids abruptly stopped cold and said "hey lets go fight that little skull kid douchebag and get trapped in a house instead"

Hey, since I might not get the chance again, I thought I would ask. Does anyone else remember the time that somebody registered a url that was in Homestuck to redirect to their Homestuck porn thing, and we made fun of it, and they came into the thread to defend themselves and got permabanned? That was the best thing to ever come out of this thread. It's not child porn if you draw it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably because Hussie was just as tired of the comic as everyone else and inserted the ending he had planned out ages ago without connecting the hanging plotthreads to it.

MonsieurChoc posted:

Yeah, pretty much.

Everyone screaming at the ending must enjoy throwing their heads at brick walls: this was always the kind of ending Homestuck was going to have. It has eschewed standard narrative structures from the very beginning, and to expect it to conform to them at the very end is misguided to say the least.

Unlike the Mass Effect 3 ending people keep quoting, which was disappointing because it betrayed what had come before, this one is disappointing to many because it stayed close to what it was when people wanted something else.

The problem, at least for me, is that it asked all these questions. WHO CAN STOP LORD ENGLISH? WILL DESTROYING THE GREEN SUN STOP HIM? WHAT CAN BE DONE TO STOP CALIBORN AND THUS LORD ENGLISH? WILL THE JUJU DEFEAT LORD ENGLISH?

And the answer is, apparently, "I dunno"

Like, they introduced him like he mattered. If he was so goddamn inconsequential, WHY introduce him at all? Why go through all this trouble of having a nigh-unkillable immortal killing machine rampaging through the universe and trapping our heroes if the resolution is NOTHING?

It's not that we wanted a story that was completely different from the Creation Myth With Weird Kids, it's that they basically created this huge villain and then decided it never loving mattered and threw it in the dumpster.

From a writing standpoint, he basically just told us that Act 6 might as well have no happened.

Yes. Pretty much exactly, in fact. Immediate rueful noting that Homestuck is finally an anime, then continual reinforcement of that fact to slowly increasing horror, to despair at how loving little is happening. A bit of hope when English appears, some wistful flashbacks to when theories were interesting, desperate bargaining. Deranged acceptance.

Problem Sleuth is honestly an amazing example of something Hussie himself wrote that had an excellent climax and epilogue. And that was a comic where he could've actually gotten away with ending it once they open the door and got the "You're a winner!" screen.

In fact, that's basically what this is - it's the words "The end" and a very pretty presentation of a number of scenes we already knew going into it. We already knew John and friends were going through the door (although we STILL don't know what would prompt them to warp to Caliborn to fight him), we already knew Vriska was about to unleash The Weapon (which still only hinted at its purpose), we knew the kids' various dreams for the new universe (yet we didn't see all the survivors or even all their dreams, a lack of humans and trolls). There's nothing new here. Nothing we didn't know yesterday except that Calliope's death turned the green sun into a black hole, the rings were successfully destroyed and Vriska unleashed the weapon. Nothing really new except the words "The end".

The handful of disconnects actually makes this look like a failure, like the heroes lost in the end and the timeline broke and the whole universe just winked out of existence. I joked about how great it would be if Lord English won in the end but even then I'd expect him to win decisively, not just hint at the possibility that he might've and let you draw your own conclusions. What if the conclusions we draw suck, huh? What then?

Still stupid
I thought it was amazing.

It's not very hard to tie the threads together -- it's not open ended, the framework was throughout the comic. The glitch and juju being English's end, from the first intermission and the last acts.

The kids populate the new universe. Some of those worlds are wiped out by Caliborn's dad. Caliborn contaminates sburb, which exists in its own stable time loop, leading to the Alternian (blue) session, the Beta/Alpha session (red/green), and the final combined session (white), linked up somehow by Muse of Space Calliope's three orbs that generate the singularity that consumed her and the green sun.

Some mechanics aren't clear, but the broad strokes work fine for me.
