This is what the rear brake rotors on my 2003 Opel Vectra look like. The car has not been used much for most of the winter, only for about 100 km per month, but even then, that looks like a surprising amount of rust since passing inspection in October.

Is this normal, especially as the front rotors look fine?

I would probably sell this car immediately. The chance of a cheap GM corp car failing from rust looking like this is high.

Here's a stupid question about why my 2010 Honda Fit Sport's power steering turns off while I'm on the highway:

-battery died 3 months ago during very cold weather, replaced
-after replacement car still wouldn't start again on several occasions, requiring a jump-start
-checked battery and car-off current draw, everything looked fine
-car started normally for several weeks, then needed a jump again today
-had dealership mechanic check car, claims that battery fuse terminal assembly needs replacement (~$110). The terminals + post admittedly look corroded
-also had malfunctioning TPMS sensor and brake pads replaced, this probably isn't important
-terminal replacement part wasn't available today so I had to drive to work without fix, on the way I noticed the power steering would intermittently turn off (!) for several seconds
-restarted car however power steering still randomly turned off, also see steering indicator light sometimes turns on for a second when the power steering fails
-also noticed the dashboard lights flicker around the same time the power steering , the digital clock display momentarily turned off then back on

Googling suggests several causes: a blown fuse (possibly due to repeated jump-starts), the electronic power steering unit is failing, or the alternator is failing. Any suggestions as to how to figure out the real issue? Is the terminal replacement a legitimate fix for the car not starting? Could a problem with the battery cause the power-steering to fail? I'm pretty sure if I bring this back to the dealership without some understanding of the problem they'll just recommend replacing everything.

I'd start with the terminal replacement. Electrical issues can take on a host of issues and if you have an electrical power steering unit, entirely possible.

Terminal first, make sure everything is clean and tight (including chassis earth), check the charging voltage with the car running (you DO have a $10 multimeter, don't you?), see what happens if you turn the steering wheel at the same time. Report back.

I'm I insane for thinking that a 1990 Accord in one of the shittiest colours imaginable (light brown) with only 33k miles on it is pretty cool? I mean it's pretty much only due to the fact that it's like new.
It's so obviously driven by a pensioner, and therefore still in pretty much mint condition.

VVVVV: I won't lie, I did actually entertain the thought of buying it. I think the novelty of being a pensioner would wear off too quickly though.

Last time I changed my oil, it was just a few days after the previous time because I had a huge leak coming out of my fumoto. I hadn't taken my oil in my sealing pan for disposal. So I used a tub I had lying around. Now that it's time to take it to the dump, I realized I don't know how to get it there without spilling some all over my garage/driveway. Actually, now that I'm typing this, I'm thinking maybe I could tape Saran wrap onto the tub to seal it in, since the grate you dump the oil through at the dump is big enough I couldn't spill if I tried. Does that seem like it would work?

I've got a sealing pan I could pour it into, the problem is it doesn't have any sort of lower point to use as a spout.

If the saran wrap idea won't work, maybe I could take some diagonal cutters and cut a point out for it. I think I actually will do a funnel and empty oil jug for it since I can get that closer to the tub than my sealing pan. I'll put down some double or triple layered paper towels around it just in case some runs down the side of the tub instead of out.

One time I was bringing my old oil to a gas station to dispose of, and I had a standard capped gallon () full of oil sitting on my passenger floor. I had to stop short, and it launched the gallon forward, and when it fell the force blew the cap right off.

I had to clean oil out of my carpets for weeks, and it took months for the smell to go away.

Do it right, and get a way to transport it safely.

I'm intrigued. Was the sealing pan marketed as disposable? If it doesn't have an outlet, how is it anything but single use? Would be interested to see a pic.

I must not be explaining it well. The sealing pan is one of the ones from Wal-Mart. It has a lid at the top, if you take that off there's a grate to pour through. There's another hole on the side with a lid you unscrew to dump it out. The thing is, that was still full so I just used a dishpan last time I changed my oil. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the oil out of the dishpan so I can dispose of it.

So if someone were to do something loving dumb like forget to lock their torque wrench and snap one of these bolt's in the 1.7L valve cover, how do you get the bolt out of the cover? I got the other end out of the head, but the bolt itself has this weird washer welded to it so I cannot remove it from the cover and I have no idea how to install a new one once I do. I can't find anything in my manual, and everything online only talks about removing the broken part, which isn't rocket surgery.

So for the past few weeks my factory panic alarm goes off randomly, thus setting off my aftermarket (Compustar) alarm on my 2013 Ram 1500. No amount of smashing the panic button gets it to stop. I can drive the truck 14mph to stop it going off, but this isn't a solution and it just goes off again 3 minutes later.

This likes to happen at 2 in the morning so all the neighbors can yell about my loving truck as me and my brother try to disconnect the battery in the dark :(

Might want to check if the door open switches are working correctly.

Years ago I had a Chevy Malibu as a company car and the driver's side door switch didn't work correctly (was stuck in "closed" 99% of the time), but every once in a while it would report the door was open and the alarm would sound as if someone had forced the door open when the car was locked. Fleet company said it wasn't a major enough issue to address so I just ended up pulling the horn fuse so when it happened in the middle of the night I didn't have to jump out of bed to find my keys to stop the alarm.

Does your alarm system have a position senor? Some older alarm systems have them in case the car gets jacked up to steal the wheels, but if they come loose, it's pretty much non stop alarm

This is more of a general/society question. Is it true that if you own a really fast (re:loud) car that you actually have to really restrain yourself and avoid doing things you'd normally get away with in a regular economy car?

Like my friend has a Grand National that does 12.8 and he says just driving 40 kph in a residential neighborhood is enough to get people in lesser cars to chase after him and yell at him for going "too fast". And my buddy who drives an SRT392 says if he accelerates to pass someone on the highway or just pulls ahead of everyone they actually chase him and throw up their hands going all "what the gently caress are you doing?!". They both tell me if you do this enough the police will send you letters and show up at your house threatening you with stunt driving charges and poo poo. Even if they can't prove anything you don't wanna be on their shitlist because it just means more hassles down the road.

I find that really surprising because I've been passed by corvettes, maseratis and astons just hooning it on the highway and I never did anything. Are people really THAT loving serious about this poo poo that they'd start filming for plates and pulling over to call the police?!?

Eh, I've seen it. It's usually the old guy who turns complaining into an Olympic sport. Drove through a neighborhood regularly and my exhaust occasionally pops and has a decent rumble and had an old grey haired guy literally shaking his fist at me every other time as I passed his house at 45kph.

Those are the kinds of people who equate loud = fast and love complaining. I've never heard of anyone getting notices in the mail from complaints, but I do believe in the power of the bored and crotchety to write/phone in those complaints.

Yeah today I went for a cruise with some friends and there were a lot of loud cars with us. 3 Hellcats, 2 Lotuses, some heavily modded C6s a couple C7s and Gallardo etc. Sometimes this guy in a ZL1 would peel out a bit and shake his tail loose at T junctions and turns but otherwise it was an orderly convoy of like 15-20 really fast cars.

Every stop we made the police came down on us to tell us there were complaints about illegal street racing. We parked in this pay parking lot in a church and this cop went absolutely BONKERS on us. He demanded everyone move out of the lot (despite having paid for parking) and that if no one moved they'd come with more police and force them to move.

I guess a procession of loud sports cars and exotics automatically means there's street racing and folks need to dial 911 or some poo poo.

I had a neighbor who complained about my truck having a loud exhaust because he lives at the bottom of a hill and I have to go faster than idle to get up it. I tried explaining that I was trying to be as quiet as possible when leaving in the mornings, but he refused to believe me and said I was flooring it. So I spent a week actually flooring it past his house in the mornings and now he doesn't complain to me.
Legally there wasn't poo poo he could do because the noise is below the legal limit and the HoA believes me when I say I do the best I can to keep the noise down when people are possibly asleep.
I also somehow get less attention from cops on the road. I guess because they think I'm one of the good ol' boys and not worth bothering unlike dem durned ricers kids and their tunered impert cars?
I think what I'm getting at is do whatever you what with your car, just try to not be a jackass and you won't be harassed.

Yes, it's true. My friend and I rescued a 1988 RX-7 that had some sort of straight pipes. Just driving it around the country where I lived was enough to get the police called twice. No speeding or reckless driving involved. The noise apparently upset someone's Rottweiler. A couple weeks back I bought a bike with a FMF exhaust, rode 10 feet over the property line and my neighbor threatened to call. Was never a problem when I crossed the same spot with my tractor, truck or mower.
