I was headed to the store and the car in front decided it would be the southernly hospitable thing to stop a couple of car lengths from the store entrance just to let another driver out of the entrance and into traffic.

Except there's a stop light about 300 feet past the entrance. And the light was red. And the guy at the entrance was trying to make a left turn. All while a steady stream of cars queuing up in the center lane/soon-to-be turning lane makes a left turn from that entrance drat near impossible during rush hour.

Being my rather impatient self, as soon as traffic eased up I scooted into the left lane, moved past Mr. Southern Hospitality and made that right turn into the entrance.

Turned out Mr. Southern Hospitality had his head buried in a smartphone.

Where I'm at, white buses transport folks between our base and another where the main medical facilities are, so it's active duty military, veterans, and their dependents - all of whom are primarily on that bus to get to medical appointments and the like. Made me really queasy to think of one of those buses racing a train. :(

People tend not to think about a train loving their poo poo up until it actually fucks their poo poo up good and proper. Then they want to blame the conductor for not making his train stop on a dime just like their shitbox car.

How do people consistently gently caress train crossings up? Trains aren't exactly new and unfamiliar technology. They aren't very stealthy or unpredictable either, especially when the conductor is (probably) laying on the very loud horn.

Well compared to the total number of train crossings it's probably not THAT common. It just always goes poo poo when it does happen.

And personally, I never hear train horns until they're danger close. They delay too long or something because it's always HONNNN-train.

People keep running into the LRT here. It runs on a track, must obey traffic signals itself in the downtown area, and it's giant and easily visible. It basically combines the usual difficulty of running into a train with the difficulty of running a red light right into the side of a large truck.

One time three separate people managed to run into it on the same day, all in separate incidents.

EDIT: We also have a law, which I assume is common, that school buses must stop at all uncontrolled railway crossings. Honestly, it seems like extending that law to all vehicles would be far from the worst idea, at least if there's anything that obscures visibility on either side. We have stop signs in way dumber places than that.

I happened to notice quite a few of those crossings didn't have arms or working warning lights. Not that it'll stop an idiot from being an idiot, but not fixing that poo poo gives said idiots an excuse to say "oh there was no warning I didn't see/hear the train it's not my fault" despite trains being loud as gently caress and plainly visible. Maybe instead of those goofy arms, they should install those in-ground retractable posts that are used in parking lots to prevent people leaving without paying. I'd pay good money to see some jackass slam into one of those trying to beat a train to the crossing.

Yea, and at least with that, if they slam into it, they wreck the front of the bus, but haven't murdered everyone on it including themselves.

They do that in my area too. The difference is that the tracks are completely still there, but 10 feet past the crossing is a single old steam train/museum, and you know that's not going anywhere.

Trains are not always that visible depending on the angle of the intersection and trees or other geographical features. The other issue is that in some areas there are entirely too many crossings with few/no trains ever on them. Just on Monday I was driving through a somewhat industrial area and must have crossed like 10 train tracks, some of them clearly not functional, within 1-2km. You just get used to there not being any trains.

Disgruntled Bovine
Jul 5, 2010

The thing about lightly used tracks is, if they don't have gates and lights the train is required to stop so the conductor can get down and stop traffic. There's a crossing on i95 in Maine where this happens. It does have lights, but no gates, so the poor conductor has to walk out into the middle of the highway with flares and a flag and stop traffic before the train can cross. I think the speed limit drops to 45 at the crossing, but the rest of the road is 70 mph and nobody ever expects the train because it comes through maybe once a week.

xzzy
Mar 5, 2009

The tracks I cross every day has tall trees concealing it completely until about 20 feet before the crossing. It's at an angle to the road too, so from one direction you drat near have to get on the tracks to tell if a train is coming or not.

I've never heard of a requirement that trains stop at road crossings, regardless of signage/lightage. Maybe that I-95 example is an exception. It sounds nice. At bare minimum I see crossings with flashing red lights and no barrier but the train still has right-of-way.

Yeah if you weigh millions of pounds and take up to a mile to stop, you win. Simple physics. Anyone who tries to say otherwise is welcome to learn it themselves... without anyone else in the car please.

For example, this guy. Idiot went around the crossing gates, or rather, he went around the first gate and was... interrupted while attempting to go around the second. http://wvut.org/2016/04/one-injured-in-jeep-vs-train-accident/

Maybe some railroads specifically stop because they know that on lightly used crossings people might ignore them without gates to force the point. All I know is I've seen it many times on crossings which only have lights but no gates.

I'm not advocating ignoring those crossings or assuming the train will stop. Trains *always* have the right of way.

The problem with making the arms mandatory at *all* crossings, is that it would cost a ridiculous amount of money, as there are probably millions of level crossings in the US alone out in nowhereseville, and even if it was mandated, I doubt that the railroads have the ability to come up with the amount of money required, which means it would be up to the government to pay for it, and since the government is barely functional at best.. yea.

Not only that but a lot of those middle-of-nowhere crossings are out in farm land where there's plenty of wide open visibility. A country two-lane where you can see a half mile down the rails in either direction before you're close enough to read the text on the crossbucks doesn't need a full-featured light and gate setup.

My driver's ed teacher had a simple solution: stop at the atop line, make sure no one is in the crosswalk, pull forward until you can see, then proceed as normal. DON'T just drive into the crosswalk and risk hitting pedestrians.
