Is the Wii U version of Shantae more akin to Mighty Switch Force 1 or 2? 1 was pretty optimized for the console with proper hi-res graphics, whereas 2 was basically the 3DS game blown up to TV-size.

It's MSF2 style, ie pixel art with HD character portraits, menus, etc.

When MSFHD came out , they got a lot of complaints about the 'cheap" graphics and lack of pixel art so they didn't bother doing it again for MSF2, and Shantae's sprites are way too detailed for feasibly (cheaply) redraw in HD.

It's too bad Nintendo won't just let the gamepad act 100% like a classic controller when you enter vWii mode. I'd consider buying more random games on the Wii shop. (and it'd be cool to play my Sega games with the gamepad.)

Miitomo isn't the loyalty program; although you can earn coins for the loyalty program through it.

And yes, you can upgrade virtual console purchases for a small fee.

But then they couldn't charge you again for the "upgrade." I used the last of my CN coins on Paper Mario for the Wii and then had the pleasure of paying another $2 or so to play it with the controller that came with the system.

I continue to bear it ill will when the US branch was horrible when it came to updating physical rewards. Hell I'm still a little mad about the time the EU branch gave out the soundtrack to Kirby Triple Deluxe and all I ended up getting was a digital copy of Game and Wario.

As long as it was associated with your NNID, it will transfer. They won't download automatically though; you'll have to go into your purchase/download history on the eshop.
