If you look at my last.fm profile, I listen to metal and smooth jazz. Sometimes at the same time. It's great and idgaf what anyone thinks -- I'll headbang to Chris Standring if I feel like it!

With like zero effort you can make that into a black metal song.

Question for dudes in here who know their stuff: are there any bands that sound like Lord of Evil - Kill For Satan?

Do you care more for the style of music, or the production? Aryan Blood's "Eternal Strife" or Totenburg's "Weltmacht oder Niedergang" are similar, but miss this sorta mid-paced Bathory feel of it. ...or the thread favorite, Totenbag.

They're just super fast and dramatic and bombastic to me, they don't do that sort of proggy crap I'm talking about. Like messing with time signatures and using weird-rear end beats mid- song. The Light Bringer album I listened to (Scenes of Infinity) had some parts on it that were way too close to Dream Theater for my liking. If they have anything that's more just straight-up crazy power metal, I'll give that a chance.
I did also say I can only listen to Pathfinder for a few songs at a time too, so :v:

Midnight Circus is probably their closest to just pure power metal, but it still has some pretty over-the-top bits, like the instrumental track. I'd honestly suggest Fuki's other project Unlucky Morpheus if you like her vocals but don't want to put up with DREAM THETER. She's also in the all-girl group DOLL$BOXX but they're only somewhat metal.

Other female-fronted projects I'd check out if you're curious, that are more power than prog, are Tears of Tragedy, Mardelas, Albion, and the second Minstrelix album (first is prog, next ones have a Japanese male vocalist rather than the American female one).

I like both, but probably the style more so. Those are ok but more Bathory influence would be cooler

Saw Baroness and Mutoid Man last night. Pretty great all around. Ben Koller is a loving animal on the drums. John from Baroness had an art pop up in town before the show where you could get prints and guitar pedals and such which was pretty cool.

Also saw that Melt Banana / Melvins / Napalm Death tour a few weeks ago, first two were very good, Napalm Death not so much.

I'm looking for a band that does music in a similar style to Dream Theater in the Images and Words era. Kind of like prog metal that's a little more on the prog side than the metal side.

I checked out Haken and they're definitely the best "DT" style prog metal band in the current era.

If you can put up with the vocals, you want Vanden Plas's Beyond Daylight album:

Awesome, been looking forward to this.

This reminds me, I was listening to Obscura the other day and man, that is a hosed up album... Does anyone have any examples of death metal that is that abrasive and dissonant made before 1998? My old metal knowledge is not good.

In a similar vein as Human Remains, though more weird and goofy than ugly is Lethargy, which split up when half the band joined Today is the Day, then later started some other band whose name escapes me.

I had high hopes for Circus Maximus -- they put out a pretty good album with 2006's The 1st Chapter -- but every album since got subsequently worse and now they're absolutely terrible.

But check out The 1st Chapter and see if you like it.
