How far, Doctor?
How long have you lived?

So, I quite enjoyed Garden of Sinners, and I was specifically interested in seeing some more badass wizard battles like in the fifth film. That's why I decided to watch Fate/Stay Night which had wizard battles (but not very badass ones, gotta be honest). I actually got through the first season thinking this was gonna lead up to something cool, and then the second season starts with this:

I guess the thread title is appropriate. Are there actually gonna be badass wizard battles, or what? Is this poo poo just gonna get worse from here on out?

Breaking News: Fate/Stay Night was written 12 years ago, back when VNs had to have porn to get any attention from the nerd audience at all.

Astoundingly, even modern adaptions of it still have some skeezy bits because it's still aimed at nerds!!!

Anyway F/SN is mostly a slow boil until the end. Of the three routes, UBW is the best about spacing out the cool stuff, but even it has a Designated poo poo Gets Real point.

It's just how the story's written.

I find it weird everyone immediately got defensive because the villain did a villainous thing that was intentionally designed to be degrading to the hero because she hates heroes.

KnK is good and I wouldn't compare it to FSN because they're different stories w/ different purposes. KnK's more self-contained for one thing.

Yeah, the wizard battle in Garden of Sinners owns. Two smug assholes outsmarting one another for ten full minutes. It's pretty much perfect.

Luckily, I can currently only watch the first two seasons, so I guess I'll have a lot of time to think about that question.

The third film kind of sucks, imo. Lots of rape and murder leading to very little interesting storytelling. When it comes to that evil rapist guy: As horrible as that was, it made sense in the context of the show. I can understand that a hosed up lion dude would probably try to devour his prey. It's skeevy and exploitative, but I get it. In F/S N, there is genuinely no reason for Caster to do this to Saber. It comes off as especially unnecessary because the pose she makes Saber hold is only present in that one episode. In the next episode, she just lies on the floor. Seems to me like it was mainly meant to be sexy.

Caster has an unhealthily large sexual obsession with Saber and collects Saber merchandise. She is constantly drooling over Saber and how cute she is. This is canon.

~Everybody wants to be a cat~

The joke that everyone collectively latched onto was Caster being a drooling obsessive Saber fangirl who wants to be givin' her the sex, but really it seems kind of out there to me for someone to say Caster's Saber bride torture was for no reason and its only purpose was audience titillation. In the Fate route there's a threesome out of nowhere for no real reason, the stuff that's there to indulge the audience's libido and the stuff that uses sex as a motif for storytelling is night and day.

Caster makes it crystal clear that she sees Saber as an embodiment of purity and despises it. She is not the only character who does this, almost every character in Stay Night and Zero recognizes Saber as a "pure being," and react according to their personality and beliefs. In Caster's case, she wants to destroy and defile that purity because of her own traumas and history. It takes on an overtly sexual air, but all of this is clear and obvious symbolism that Caster is using intentionally, be it to advance bending Saber to her will through psychological torment or just for her own amusement/gratification. The wedding dress, the dialogue where Caster ponders about Saber's maidenhood, the pose, the sadism Caster exerts against Saber, this is all window dressing. The real meaning of it all is the challenge to Saber's EXISTENTIAL purity. The sexual element of that purity in the foreground is only there to get across the allegory.

This of course makes perfect sense because of which Heroic Spirit Caster is, and more importantly the specific branch of the scholarly tradition surrounding that persona from which this interpretation of her character is drawn. But that's a spoiler so I'll leave it at "trust me, it makes sense."

I'm not going to pretend that Nasu always succeeds at trying to use sex as a tool for mature and interesting storytelling, but the majority if the time he's at least trying, and its really obvious when he's not. Considering the general state of the anime market it really bums me out when people don't give him any credit and lump stuff like this in with the usual "this was just here to get the audience's rocks off," seinen heap.

I think most of the sexual stuff in Type-Moon stories is at least partly to get the audience's rocks off; it's just sometimes done in a way that makes for interesting characters as well. (Exhibit A is Akiha, who should be a terrible fetish character but is actually legitimately interesting.)

Okay, since I now know who Caster is, and how her part of the story ends, I feel like I can judge this a bit more clearly. While I'd agree that you can definitely find an attempt at justifying that scene with Medea's history, this is by no means a prominent character trait for Caster within the actual story. What makes her think that sexual violence will be especially effective? Caster never uses it before or after that point, so it's clearly not character-defining for her. The other option would be that it's character-defining for Saber who until then hasn't had anything even remotely romantic or sexual going on. (Caster also does not say anything about maidenhood as far as I can tell. Maybe that's only in the video game.) Besides, the torture simply doesn't have any effect on Saber. As soon as she is free, Saber is back to normal. That entire "I'll break your spirit"-spiel is of absolutely no consequence.

It's kind of a shame considering the fight against Caster is basically everything I wanted out of this show. (The German counting was a nice touch.)
