Tried playing Blood Money again recently and man, that first level is a pain to slog through. Not only are long tutorials annoying at the best of times, it's tonally way off from the rest of the game and it's a pretty bad introduction.

That said, Absolution just felt embarrassing from the get go. It's like someone watched Minority Report and thought quirky = interesting.

I always thought it felt more like one of those tarantino rip offs that popped up after he got big but didn't realise that it takes a lot of skill and talent to use elements from trashy media and elevate them into something good. Thus, battle nuns and hammy southern villains.

Yeah they wanted a grindhouse type story and they had no feel for it at all. You can see those touches all over the previous Hitman games but Absolution took it to the max and totally screwed it all up.

Absolution really needed to be its own series. Some kind of stealth/cover shooter in the Splinter Cell blacklist vein. Rewrite the grindhouse stuff by someone that knows how to do that right and it would have been a good spin on that type of game.

Yeah. A guy licking his lips while he skips over you like a crazy cowboy is just trying way too hard.

There seemed to be a brief time where that style of writing was really popular. Thankfully it doesn't seem so now.

Absolution makes me wonder if it was originally supposed to be Kane & Lynch 3, but Square-Enix wanted them to make a Hitman game instead because Hitman was much better received. The kind of tasteless grindhouse feel Absolution has would better fit Kane & Lynch and they both make cameos in the game too.

A thing I learned with this new Hitman, I enjoyed going to earlier levels after progressing through some, not so much ticking off obligatory challenges in order to unlock more stuff.

Man if Absolution had House of the Dead: Overkill's writing it would have made up for the crap gameplay.

You need to unlock it by doing challenges/completing escalations in the Paris level.

Jar Jar is the key to all of this.
For the people complaining about the virus, there's a quick and easy way to destroy it that is actually safer than the "proper" one: simply shoot the stalactite above the research lab from afar.

Also, how the gently caress are you supposed to take the sniper rifle on top of the bell tower without having half of Italy on your rear end?

Either get a bodyguard/security uniform so you can carry it on your back without anyone caring, or sneak it up - from the sewer is easiest, and doable if you time it right.

Just throw an exploding golf ball at the tank.

Make sure to say something like. "Looks like your research just hit a sandtrap." or something like that.

I love the quiet Rumanian since I started playing part two of the series. Late first impressions:

Compared to part four, there is no more 'sneaking' but 'running' on demand. Then there is "stay in cover" which I never used so far. We'll see if that'll be useful someday.

More talking! More smalltalk! Finally characters communicate what they have seen and whether they know how the culprit looked like. I also love the quips when people accept my disguise and let me through.

Finally you're not being shot any more when you're in the wrong place but rather reprimanded and asked to leave. Weirdly this allows you to run past guards, hide, waiting to be told off and you're free to explore! "Never come back!"? I am in the place you're supposed to protect now. But I am not complaining.

Like the clean look, reminds me of the fourth part. Surprisingly there is no blood in this game about killing but that's fine.

Previous titles had those "special moments" brought forth by a combination of your actions and the excellent OST by Jesper Kyd. Here the music is pretty average and I caught myself turning it off. Oh well.

A lot of work has been put into the maps but I am not sure that makes a better game. Level design seems less "tight" as the >1000 guest in Paris are not more impressive than the 50 in Blood Money's first level. On the other hand Sapienza really shows you a lavish, living world, filled with people, so this is ultimately better I guess.

There aren't more not-plot-related actions as far as I can tell. That's neither good nor bad.

The first two training missions were weird as heck. The newcomer hitman is supposed to prove himself in two scenarios, so his employers have kindly reconstructed a yacht and a Russian army base using plywood? All weapons are supposedly simulated, but are the cracked necks simulated too? Same with the smalltalk you can overhear even when people don't know you're there? Every emotion is an act? I thought this was bizarre for a video game where you are not restricted to "simulating" anything. It could have just been a flashback tutorial. Weird!

The newspaper articles were great and I miss them. They were framing the missions and provided great commentary for your actions, whether you were a smug silent assassin or a psychopath. You'd feel extra clever for them mentioning the tragic "accidents" the police will likely never solve. Furthermore there was some foreshadowing about your next targets using other articles. This playful element added a lot and I miss it.

Technically it's okay. My Nvidia 750TI won't cut it at 1080p but that was to be expected. Luckily there'll be new cards coming out this year.

All in all a fantastic game that really widens the scale of Blood Money's mechanics and features much more talkative characters. The so-so music and the lack of the newspaper are a little disappointing though.

Yeah if you have the dropbox in the sewers unlocked it's real easy to get up there. The timing gaps for the church staff is super generous.

You've changed the entire level for me. I LOVE the assassin stuff above ground but loathed having to always end up doing the dance of destroying the virus. Already got my Silent Assassin/Suit Only unlock so gently caress it. Quick shot and out of there from now on.

I get the feeling IO are oddly attached to Kane & Lynch for some reason, so you're just going to have to make do by starting a bar brawl with Kane and framing Lynch for shooting at garden gnomes in Absolution.

I was in a rural English town this weekend during a fair/boat race and it occurred to me that it would be an interesting location for hitman. Although you would need a way to explain guards having guns since our police aren't armed.

They can carry tasers, and we do have SWAT-alike specialist police who would a) be called in if some maniac was running around killing people or b) might be there already when there's the sort of celebrity in town that Agent 47 might be interested in icing.

Even easier is to shoot the virus through the glass. I've used a silenced pistol to get it from the ledge on the other side of the cave, the one with the lone security guard. Took me 6 or 7 shots, but it saved me a trip over to that side.

Plus, call me dumb :downs: but whats with the whole venting air thing? I noticed that the computer outside the room and the one in it both let you vent air but didn't seem to do much. Just noise to cover up firing guns or choking people?

I destroyed the virus by distracting the two people and overheating it, but anything to simplify that would be really nice.

The dongle comes from a scientist that starts the level at the church. If you wait she'll eventually head down to the lab but if you don't know who she is already you'll have a hard time picking her out of the crowd.

The vents allow you to enter the virus chamber without a hazmat suit. You can also use them as an assassination method - if you destroy the virus, Francesca will go into the lab without a suit - you can then turn the vents off while she's in there and she'll choke on the toxic air

Kind of but she takes her sweet rear end time getting down to the lab after you destroy the virus. That said, anyone figured out how to drop a stalactite on her? I tried shooting the one that's over the lab when she was in there but it didn't hit her.
