McDragon posted:Well the reason why is kind of sad, but I found out just now that every known living kakapo has a name. In other awesome news they are trying sequence the genome of every living kakapo. This will be the first time in the world that an entire population of animals has had its genomes sequenced. It's sad for the same reason why they were able to name every kakapo, but it's still quite an achievement. On the plus side, they had a really great breeding season this year. It has been a record-breaking year for hatches, and 38 of the chicks that hatched this year are alive and well. They started an artificial insemination program that provided a great boost to fertility and made it possible for genetic material from all three islands to intermix without having to relocate the birds. They wait 6 months before adding the new chicks to the list, so hopefully the list will have a bunch of new names come October/November. Until then, they are known by the name of their mother and the order in which they hatched. This is Kuihi 1 getting close to the age where he/she will leave the nest. This is Zephyr 2, the last chick hatched this year. http://www.maggiebarry.co.nz/news/final-kakapo-egg-of-the-year-hatches/ http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/ourchangingworld/audio/201787970/genome-sequencing-every-living-kakapo I love kakapo. luloo123 has a new favorite as of 02:02 on May 11, 2016 |

CJacobs posted:ITT scientists raise dinosaurs and pretend they're birds to get them through customs The latest science says that birds are dinosaurs. Not descended from dinosaurs, actually dinosaurs. You toggle one gene on and they grow teeth. You stick a plunger to a chicken's butt, and it walks like a raptor. Dinosaurs are alive and well, and you can watch them feed in your back yard. I found an abstract for a research paper many years ago on the effect of delaying the activation of genes for (I think) vitamin A production in birds when they're still developing in the egg. When they altered the point at which the vitamin production was supposed to begin, the birds developed scales instead of feathers. Sadly, abstracts don't come with photos so I'll never know what the birds - I think they were chickens - looked like, but I'm betting it was uncannily like dinosaurs. Ever look at a bird's feet? Scales. Imagine the whole bird looking likes that. Yup, dinosaur.

There's a way of causing a chicken embryo to develop dinosaur leg bones by inhibiting their maturation, because birds naturally develop dinosaur legs as part of their growth in the egg before getting their bird legs. You don't even have to change much, just stop it at the right time.
