It's great that Grognan is out there fighting the good fight (no, really, it is, I'm enjoying the updates) but pearl-clutching and going "oh wally wally wally how terrible this is!" is silly.

You should do some research into early human history and prehistory, imo. Did you know that before agriculture, most societies were egalitarian? Agriculture did not lead to class divisions in all cases, but many of them it did.

In other words, "human nature" as you understand it is only one epoch of our species' development. We are incredibly adaptive, and it's likely we could survive long enough to see a paradigm shift as incredible as the invention of farming. I don't think we could predict what society would look like then though, it would most likely be as incomprehensible to us as the industrial revolution would be to a caveman.

By the way, did you know that empathy is a teachable skill?

When I learned a grown-rear end man wrote a book called The End of History and wasn't immediately laughed out of town, I suddenly realized the problem went much deeper than I previously realized.

Maybe these nerds should take one book out of the liberal arts curriculum and sub in Watchmen:

I too long to a return to our pre-agricultural roots, and am interested in modeling out how things could be in the future as opposed to dealing with the hear and now - such as the political sausage making that's being live blogged.

And yes, I am aware of that last bit - it's why I mentioned a more robust civil society actually interacting with folks and taking part in things. But that's also an offshoot of the same school of political thought that bemoans the drop in bowling leagues.

Our entire history's been spent clawing ourselves up and out of the pit, man. Going "deep down we're assholes" doesn't negate the advances that we've made despite that. If anything, it makes the good we've managed to do all the more important. But realizing that "some people are assholes, but some assholes are -assholes-" keeps you from having batshit "burn it all down!" people go off in your face like a claymore.

If I'm the yardstick by which 'better' is judged then we're -all- hosed. But luckily, I'm not. I've met plenty of generous, nice people who feel deep down that they're doing the right thing.

But I have seen people be an rear end in a top hat just for the sake of being an rear end in a top hat, or to get ahead. I've seen how backwards we can be, and petty racism thrown around, and casual sexism. poo poo sucks now, it sucked even more before, and it'll keep on sucking unless we practice mindfulness to go against our natures.
