You should do some research into early human history and prehistory, imo. Did you know that before agriculture, most societies were egalitarian? Agriculture did not lead to class divisions in all cases, but many of them it did. In other words, "human nature" as you understand it is only one epoch of our species' development. We are incredibly adaptive, and it's likely we could survive long enough to see a paradigm shift as incredible as the invention of farming. I don't think we could predict what society would look like then though, it would most likely be as incomprehensible to us as the industrial revolution would be to a caveman. By the way, did you know that empathy is a teachable skill?

Um, bureaucracy is a new invention. It's not part of human nature. You kind of seem to be erronously applying a modern sensibility to the entirely of human history. I was just watching the Star Trek mirror universe episode and you honestly seem to have come straight from there.

I too long to a return to our pre-agricultural roots, and am interested in modeling out how things could be in the future as opposed to dealing with the hear and now - such as the political sausage making that's being live blogged. And yes, I am aware of that last bit - it's why I mentioned a more robust civil society actually interacting with folks and taking part in things. But that's also an offshoot of the same school of political thought that bemoans the drop in bowling leagues.

Saying that things are the way they are and thats it is an end to a discussion. There is no alleviating anything according to that viewpoint because A: if people are unrepentant shitbags then they are not interested in alleviating anything and B: the same argument applies. Suggesting that there is anything to be done is contradicting yourself.

My entire worldview just can't agree with what you're saying, friend. Mostly because I consider myself a fairly normal human and I wouldn't be an rear end in a top hat for its own sake, so I have to assume most people wouldn't either. e: Similar reason to why misanthropy seems stupid to me. It requires the speaker to assume they're 'better' than everyone else.

I'm just saying that sausage making is something we started doing at a certain point in time. If it had a beginning, it could also have an end.

But realizing that "some people are assholes, but some assholes are -assholes-" keeps you from having batshit "burn it all down!" people go off in your face like a claymore. If I'm the yardstick by which 'better' is judged then we're -all- hosed. But luckily, I'm not. I've met plenty of generous, nice people who feel deep down that they're doing the right thing. But I have seen people be an rear end in a top hat just for the sake of being an rear end in a top hat, or to get ahead. I've seen how backwards we can be, and petty racism thrown around, and casual sexism. poo poo sucks now, it sucked even more before, and it'll keep on sucking unless we practice mindfulness to go against our natures.
