In my experience HEMA people (many, not all) are actively trying to fight the "we're all fat dorks" stereotype and many of them are in the process of getting fit. Then again I live in NYC where people actually care about physical fitness and appearance, so I may be biased. HEMA gives an incentive to be fit which is nice.

Which just goes to show you, we have so many fatties, sometimes they go to the Olympics. And are part of the team that beat the French for the Gold when it wasn't at the Olympics

I don't really care what the nationalists think until they're doing something harmful and then argued with a couple of people. If every community ripped itself apart over these people, almost every group would be gone. Maybe a few years down the road those sorts will try Co-opting the martial arts, but I don't think it's a problem right now. Paganism has a couple of white pride elements in it, but we don't call them Nazis either.

I meant in the general community, not specific clubs. HEMA as an aggregate having some, not your average club. There's enough people in the general community that there are bounds to be Nazis. To the best of my knowledge there are not that many Nazi's about, but some people are convinced that there's a lot in HEMA. Mea Culpa, I wasn't clear what I meant by groups. But the standards of white pride, they were very tame. At risk of reigniting the SCA vs HEMA flamewar, SCA sounds interesting but seems like it could really benefit from stricter rules and ditching the honour system for something like kendo reffing. On the subject of having to hit people hard enough to score a point, has anyone heard anything more about the proposal to bring back accelerometers to sabre? I haven't really been keeping up with that stuff, but I did have a go at the new starting positions (back foot on the en garde line) a couple of weeks back. poo poo is weird being so close to the other person, I don't think it's necessarily worse, but I don't see how it's supposed to significantly reduce simultaneous attacks from the get-go. Instead of being a step-lunge away from your opponent you're now just a lunge away - surely this would just change the "both fencers step-lunge at each other and the ref calls simultaneous" to "both fencers lunge at each other and the ref calls simultaneous"? Someone who actually knows poo poo about sabre please explain this one to me. Also, I went to see Iron Maiden not long ago, Dickinson is still on form and making full use of those lunge muscles/flexibility. i have sparred against a rodelero with a pike and he owned me repeatedly; a dude with a sword and i were able to beat him together. the shield and sword is powerful

The staves I use are 7ft, so they're still maneuverable, but if the pike is about 21ft like I'm imagining, I expect dodging the point is easy. Just remembered I faced sword and target with just a sword a while ago. The guy I was facing had been doing our style for a lot longer than I had and is probably fitter than me, so he had every advantage on me, but I was taken apart. Whatever I did he could block with the sword and hypothetically whack me with the shield. And the shield made feinting almost a none starter. Add a shield to almost anything and you've got a huge advantage. I reckon I'd need to carefully study a lot of movements to work out where weak points are, because under pressure they weren't obvious.

The leg (specifically above or below the knee) of the side they hold their shield on (with larger shields forcing you to pick a target lower below the knee). I prefer to nachreisen to that area after I bait out a swing.
