Have Scuzzy keep datamining while we leg it. While we're at it see if it can tap into a security camera to keep an eye on murderorb. The team heads back to the bus, and Scuzzy keeps mining until all interesting leads are exhausted. If the orb so much as shivers, Scuzzy heads home at best speed. Freefall through the access shaft we used to get here and hit repulsors halfway down to slow down in time to not crash ifit can. If we can't keep an eye on the orb, ALL GTFO full stop.
Sounds good to me. AC.

The orb stands before you, deep cracks slowly spiderwebbing its surface as vapor pours off its frozen surface. You massage aching muscles as your breathing and pulse slowly return to normal. While you recover, you command Scuzzy to continue mining for electronic gold; you're not sure what secrets this place holds, but you fully intend to make all this trouble worth it. You peer scornfully at the orb, and contemplate reaching out to perhaps to roll down--

crackleCRACK!

A sudden frozen crack startles that idea right out of you.
You head back toward the maintenance shaft, keeping a wary gaze on the frozen entity until you round a corner. As you go, you take a moment to link up to a security feed to keep an eye on the Orb.

“How far along are you, Ramadi,” you comm.

“Somewhere around hydroponics, I think,” replies Ramadi. “Would explain the gentle, homey waft of fish drokk and algae.”

“Chel, chel. Keep going, and we'll catch up. Kamula's almost to me.”

“Kamula's grife-well here,” the cyborg growls in-person as he rounds the corner. "You sure powering up that security cam is safe?"

“If that thing wakes up enough to care,” you say, "we've got slightly bigger problems. Alright, everybody, it's been an interesting date, but we're running out on the check. Everybody back to the sub, and if I look at my wrist and make a noise that sounds like I'm choking on a protein stick, go faster.”

"I think I know the sound," offers Ramadi, "like that time in that narco-den in Sector 12 when I convinced you to--"

"Keep climbing, Kinu."

The climb back down is excruciating; your leaden muscles rebel against your commands, and your claws slip from the rungs more than once. Only the unyielding grip of your bionic limbs saves you from a precipitous plummet into unknown depths. Periodically, you glance at your wristlink: Scuzzy is still digging away, and the orb still sits, steaming and crackling. Somehow, you persevere.

Somewhere near Research Sector, an irregular crackle breaks into your com. Then repeats.

“Stop messing around, Ramadi,” you grumble.

“It's not me, Reeg.”

Glancing at your security feed to make sure the orb hasn't moved (it hasn't), you draw off a few processing cycles from Scuzzy to clean up the transmission, and the unintelligible hissing resolves into a very fuzzy voice.

Is somebody alive out there,” a distorted feminine voice just barely cuts through the interference. “Anybody? Not really picky at this point...

Dread uncoils in your belly, and you consider whether or not to even reply.

A. Don't even reply.
B. Do even reply.

Scuzzy has collected a healthy amount of data, though you'll need time to sift through it later. The orb still seems stable for the moment. Should Scuzzy call it a day, or stick it out for a while longer?

C. Keep digging, little spark.
D. No need to tempt fate, bring it in.

"Is anyone alive out there?"

It's easier to leave someone to die if you don't talk to them first, and you really don't have time for a rescue mission with the ever-present menace of the Stabbiest Spheroid looming large, but...
You sigh, and try to think of the best way to initiate contact with the unknown being.

“I'm someone alive,” replies Ramadi, rendering your deliberation moot, “totally ace at it, too. Got the whole life processes package going; eating, respiration, no small amount of excretion...not so much the reproduction, but it's early, right? All told, it's a fairly chel gig most of the time. You?”

There is a prolonged silence on the other end, and you suspect you may have lost her, but then her voice returns, colored with a hint of both stress and laughter.
“Given the...biological inconveniences of being trapped in here, I'd say odds are pretty good?”

Ramadi could go on like this for a while, and while you're normally game for a bit of banter, you find yourself in a bit of a time press.
“Who are you,” you snap, anxiety turning what was meant to be a gentler question into a demand.

“I'm a geochemist,” she replies, “here surveying alien radioactives and mantle convection. I was getting some samples from the isotope locker when the Captain pulled the lockdown. Thought it might be a pathogen release, so I stayed put, until the all-clear never came. Once I made sure the labs were clear, I started scanning for transmissions, kept radio silence just in case. Then I heard you.”

“What have you been eating in there," Ramadi asks with a hint of wonder.

"Well," the voice replies, "let's just say I'm a very good geochemist."

“Regardless,” you comment, “it's your lucky cycle. Looks like we're your ride out of this mausoleum.”

“Who is this,” she asks, suddenly suspicious. “you don't sound like pirates, and it's too soon for scavengers.”

“We're...independent contractors,” you reply.

“Chel,” she sighs, “mercs. Don't know if that's better or worse.”

“There's a maintenance hatch next to the lift,” Kamula interjects. “Get down to to the krumping sub bay if you feel like living.”

“If you see a big floating ball,” Ramadi adds, “run like a plasma conduit just ruptured.”

“Right,” the voice replies. “That's all great, but I'm a geologist, not a commando, and I'm locked in, here.”

Pulling up your link, you summon Scuzzy.
“As it happens, help is on the way,” you say.

You drop with abject relief to the deck of docking level. Flexing your back and rolling your shoulders, you bend to massage your screaming thighs.
"Next time," you turn to Ramadi, "ignore my vac-brain and hack the damned lift."

"Your wish is my command," Ramadi lilts with a waggle of eyestalks.

“Going to regret that one, I can tell." Keying your comlink, you page your pilot. "Tone,” you signal, “make sure the engine's hot. We're in a hurry, and we've got a guest.”

“The engines have readiness,” Tone replies. “Fast moves available.”

Crew at your side, you move to the sub bay, glad no outside observers can see your broken-down gait, more hobble than stride.

“Age finally catching up with you, Reeg,” Ramadi cracks, patting you on the haunch.

“You can be replaced, Kinu,” you grumble. You glance down at your wristlink to gauge Scuzzy's process, and see something that stops you in your tracks.

Ramadi, who continued walking, stops and turns as she sees you not moving, concern written on her face.
“Reeg, my barbs aren't that wicked.”

“Vare,” you whisper, eyes locked onto the figure captured by Scuzzy's camera. “Vare Djata.”

Vare Djata...that's a face you haven't seen since...
A. Your convoy was attacked by pirates as children.
B. You were expelled from Maastrichtian in her place.
C. You lost your original arms.
D. You watched her die.

“You know her,” Ramadi asks, eyestalks peering over your shoulder.

“Know her,” you begin...

E. She ruined my life.”
F. “I loved her.”
G. “She was like family.”
H.”drat near killed her! It's...complicated.”

That's a name that comes with a whole freighter-load of baggage. Coming up in the same slum, and escaping the same life of crime. The joyful time at Maastrichtian, the scandal, and your ignominious withdrawal therefrom. The tearful reunion, and the catastrophic return to old habits leading to gross physical mutilation at the hands of someone else's enemies. The episode wherein one of your oldest and dearest friends was vaporized while you sat by and let it happen. The fact that at the time, you were almost happy about it. A wash of memory seizes you in a merciless grip, and you grit your teeth against a sudden upswell of emotion.
Ramadi must see the stricken look on your face, because she doesn't pursue the matter any further.
"Hoy, you don't need to tell us anything you don't want to, Reeg."

Kamula is less understanding, but gentle for Kamula.
"I just need to know if some old girlfriend's going to compromise the slotting mission," he growls. "We don't need any more krumping complications."

"It's fine," you assure your crew, "it's not a complication, it's just..."

“Complicated,” Kamula grunts, but continues walking. Ramadi, for her part, throws an arm around your snaky neck and pulls close.

"Reeg," she croons, softly butting you with her head, "we've all of us got a case of the 'it's complicated,' even if it goes into remission from time to time. You've always helped me with mine, so just let me know what I can do."

“I just...I thought she was dead, Ramadi. The last thing I ever said to her was...not good, and I thought that was it, but...” Ramadi peers at you appraisingly with a free eyestalk, and pats you supportively.

“So you've maybe got another chance,” she says softly, “and you're not sure what to do with it. This wasn't another 'old friend what slotted me over' thing, then. This was a 'I maybe love you even though I want you dead' thing?” You open your mouth, but nothing comes out.

Kamula clears his throat abruptly, shattering the momentary peace.
"This krumping cycle, ladies."

"Right," you say, mustering a bit of resolve. "It looks like Scuzzy's almost here with our guest, and as much as I'd love knowing why (and how) she's here now, that can wait for the excruciatingly long sub ride home."

Over the next couple of decicycles, you practice and discard dozens of opening lines and responses, but when the maintenance hatch creaks open, you find yourself at a loss for words. It was one thing seeing her over a drone camera, but to see her in the scale is disarming. You see a number of reactions flash across Vare's eyes when she sees you there; shock, anger, affection, finally settling on a sort of guarded wistfulness.

"Regal," she says in a clipped tone. "This is...a surprise."

You choke back your first response, and finding it difficult to look Vare in the eyes, instead focus on her tail. That's little help, however, as you see the tail-band you once gave her as a keepsake, and quickly cut your eyes back to her face.
"It's...very surprising," you finally force out. "We should..." you gesture, perhaps a bit too manically, "to the sub."

Vare gives you a look that promises a future conversation, tilts her head in a graceful nod, and continues to the sub bay. Ramadi gives you a questioning look, but you shake your head and fall in as well.

Crossing the clanking deck plates, you see Kamula standing next to the gangway, cooly watching the exit with lancejet in hand.

"Expecting trouble, big man," inquires Vare, looking over her shoulder.

"Always," he growls. "Kore, is our friend still stable upstairs?"

Your heart skips in your chest. You kept an obsessive eye on your security feed all the way down to docking, but recent events have proven a bit distracting. You quickly bring up the image of the still-stationary orb, feeling a momentary relief until you look closer. The cracks have grown; the orb has more or less split completely in two, but it's what is exposed inside that concerns you.

Nothing.

Specifically, the being that seemed so solid when it impacted the decks seems to now be hollow.
"Not to be alarmist," you begin, "but--"

Kamula is already moving before you can even begin to explain, practically throwing Vare and Ramadi into the sub's hatch and striding over to you.
"In the sub, Kore, now!"

Your only warning that something has changed is Kamula stiff-arming you in the chest with bionic force. As you fly back, bruised and breathless, you see a merciless blue-black spike thrust from beneath the deck, transfixing the cyborg's outstretched limb.

He roars and fires a round from his lancejet, not at the spike, but at its source. As the armor-piercing explosive rockets into the deck at his feet, you feel a heavy crump and hear metal screaming in agony. You roll away desperately, scrambling to your feet. Kamula crouches not too far away, one arm dangling mangled and useless, the other tracking the unseen foe below with his weapon.
"Get going, Kore," he growls through gritted teeth. "I've got one with this drokk-spill's krumping name on it."

A. Get to the sub! Give Kamula a chance to deal with this thing on his own without having to be your juve-shepherd. He's got this.
B. Get to the sub and go! Kamula can hold this thing off long enough for the rest of you to get out. Make it count.
C. Help Kamula! If you activate your shield, maybe it will distract the entity enough to let Kamula get in a good shot. And it will hopefully keep you from getting skewered immediately.
D. Help Kamula! Have Scuzzy run interference; fire its laser cutter, zoom around, generally be obnoxious. Give your cyborg the advantage.
E. C and D! Flanking maneuvers, pincer formations, throw everything and the sanitation facilities at this thing, give Kamula every chance to take it out.
F. Could you hack that crane? It would take a little time, during which you would be vulnerable, but maybe you could do something with a giant mechanical arm?
G. Something else: _______________________________________.

The entity is lurking beneath the floor, but you have a solution for that. You sweep Scuzzy's upgraded sensors over the decks, and pick up a localized electrostatic disturbance gliding toward Kamula's position.

“On my mark, K,” you command. The cyborg casts you a somewhat dubious glare, but doesn't argue.

The mass creeps closer, closer, and...

“Go!”

Kamula rolls to the side as a cluster of lethal spikes tear up through the floor. You fire Scuzzy's cutting laser at the entity, predictably to no effect. The spikes withdraw as quickly as they emerged, and you see the EM shadow flitting to Kamula's new position.

“Go!”

Kamula nimbly dodges another assault, and in the same motion, deploys his thermablade and stabs it down through the deck toward the source of the blades. You hear a sound like ice sliding over a heating element, and the plasma weapon suddenly goes dead. Kamula, grimacing, throws himself backward as an answering attack nearly slices him in half.

“No good, Kore,” he growls, “get out.” Gritting your teeth, you stare desperately at your wristlink, willing a solution to resolve.

“If I can distract it,” you bark, “can y—GO!”

Kamula only just dodges to one side to avoid the next attack, hissing in pain as he rolls on the shoulder of his mangled arm. You realize he can't keep this up forever, and the entity is getting better at anticipating the cyborg's evasions. Abruptly, an option comes to you, but not one you relish. You set Scuzzy's transmitter to emit noise on all bands, and begin to pilot erratically, periodically firing a short laser burst into the floor.

“Come and get it, you spherical sleeb,” you mutter, watching as the entity's EM shadow begins to stalk Scuzzy's profile in a manner not unlike a baykit at play. A spike launches up from the decks, but you pull Scuzzy up out of range. Just as you are about to run to the sub, however, something changes.

The blade widens, decks groaning as the entity tears a hole large enough to flow through. The amorphous mass, now smaller and more irregular, emerges from hiding, drifting up toward Scuzzy. When it reaches weapons range, however, it does not immediately attack your drone. It hangs, as if considering. Before you can respond, several things happen at once.

Kamula fires a well-aimed round from his lancejet. The projectile rockets toward the entity with a high-pitched scream...

...And sinks into its fluid mass with a wet plop.

The entity erupts in a deadly blossom of liquid metal spears...

...Blades streaking toward Scuzzy...

...And you.

The fluid mass suddenly bulges in a great glowing sphere, then explodes in a great spray of vapor and droplets. The mangled remains of some kind of crystalline device clatter to the deck near the epicenter, the glow of its core slowly blinking and fading.

You let out the breath you previously thought was your last, looking to Kamula with eyes still frozen open in shock and giving the cyborg a stiff thumbs-up. Kamula nods wearily, trudging over to the remains of the entity.

“I had a ball,” he growls, pressing his boot down on the core with a chorus of tiny crunches and snaps. The light in the core goes dead black, then the core itself shatters into so many glassy splinters.

Do you wish to collect the remains of the entity?
A. No.
