Brigador - Early Access Launch Trailer

Watch the above if you just want to see what's up.

Steam posted:

Great Leader is dead. Solo Nobre must fall.

Brigador is an isometric mech action game full of intense, tactical combat. Fight your way through the streets of Solo Nobre in a 21 mission story campaign as well as a free play mode with endless variety.

The game is the forbidden love child of brothers Hugh and Jack Monahan, plus programmers Dale Kim and Harry Hsiao. Hugh made a game dev outfit called Stellar Jockeys based in Champaign, IL. You may also know Gausswerks' Jack as gauss. The game has just launched out of early access on Steam, and can be purchased for 29.99, which includes the full game plus the soundtrack composed by Makeup and Vanity Set and a friggin' audiobook of an official novelization written by Brad Buckmaster and voiced by Ryan Cooper! Wowza!

The game and the extras are also being sold individually via itch.io, if that's not really your speed. It's basically the same thing, except the guys who run itch.io are super cool and you should support them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDdwoUzNPGg
Giant Bomb Unfinished

Brigador's gameplay inherits from titles like Desert Strike, Future Cop: LAPD, and Mechwarrior 3050.

If that means nothing to you, the game is an isometric vehicle combat game where you take control of one of 46 playable vehicles, choose from a set of 40 weapons based on your equipment slots and rampage across 40+ maps including a campaign and fully customizable freelance contracts. Solo Novo is a gritty dystopian colony planet that has up until now been ruled by the charismatic Great Leader with an iron fist. The Solo Nobre Concern, its former masters and a long standing galaxy-spanning mega corporation, wants their planet back and anybody who can sign the contract can cash in.

Standing in your way are three unique factions of enemies with unique enemy types, bosses, and weapon styles who are all very happy to punch a hole through your cockpit and leave only your blood smeared across the pavement. Vehicles you pilot have varying characteristics and unique abilities, ranging from bipedal mechs who can deliver powerful stomps to unfortunate passersby, to bulldozing tanks and nimble anti-gravs that can fly over short obstacles and pancake enemies underneath them. Weapons come in many distinct and wonderful flavors: shred foes with more conventional munitions such as cannons, mortars, rockets, and machine guns, or channel your sci-fi magic and field railguns and lasers.

When you're done liberating the planet in the campaign, the Freelance mode of the game allows you to completely customize your loadout and how many districts you assault. The SNC pays good cash for any and all targets of opportunity, which you can use to unlock new pilots, weapons, vehicles, and missions to play with in future sessions... provided you can escape the planet with your ill-gotten gains. The game is a pseudo-roguelike-like-ish in that death in a run is final and will only earn you a pittance compared to what successfully completing a contract will reward. Considering the huge range in pilots (who act as global difficulty settings) and vehicles (some of which are easy to master, others less so) and playlists, there is a mix of risk vs. reward for every skill level.

This is a huge image, but check it out! A full render of one of the game's maps.

Every map is lovingly hand-crafted by artisan cartographers who only use organic pixels. There's 21 unique freelance maps alone, each packing an absurd amount of detail and made gorgeous by the game's fully in-house engine with pseudo-3D lighting effects. Plus, bonus forums in-jokes.

Oh, and the game fully supports making custom maps using Tiled, a free map making program. The plan is to finalize the learning resources and make things pretty in the near future so that anyone can make their own socialist utopia.

Taking suggestions for this section!

Aiming

Both of your weapons will display a trajectory (blue for primary, red for secondary) that accurately represents the path of travel, making shots against stationary targets very easy to line up. Most difficulties in combat come from the isometric perspective and not understanding how the system works. Your mouse cursor is positioned at about 95% of the bullets' travel distance, so be sure to point ahead of short targets to hit them. Conversely, for tall objects and most importantly :siren:HITTING ANTI-GRAVS:siren: you can increase the height at which your projectiles impact them by aiming a good distance *past* them. For anti-gravs especially don't be fooled by the sprite, keep your sights lined up with their shadow on the ground or you'll shoot wide.

The Alarm, and Ambushes

As a Brigador, you're generally afforded the luxury of surprise. So long as the enemy is not aware of your presence, they will be operating without active shields, making them easier to kill. Even when you are noticed, shield generators do not turn on instantly and take time to fully charge- powerful shots can still kill them in a single shot if you get the off early. You can lose this advantage, however, if an enemy unit with radio calls in the threat. Look for eyeball icons above certain units, and a blue line of sight indicator pointed at you when they see you. If the icon turns into a radio signal, you have a few precious seconds to neutralize it before the alarm is sounded. If that happens, any security walls on the level will activate, making traversing the level harder, and all units will have their shields up regardless of their awareness level.

There are ways to make stealth easier: every level has communication towers and power substations that you can destroy. The former will increase the time it takes to call in the alarm, and the latter will lower all security walls when you take them all out.

Directional Damage

The concept is simple but you have to be aware of it. You take less damage on your front side compared to your sides and rear, which generally take an extra 40% and 100% damage from enemies, respectively. This means it's usually a very bad idea to try to retreat from a fight by turning around. Try to keep your front pointed at the enemy at all times and disengage by pulling backward or waiting until you can find cover before reorienting.

Enemy units have the same behavior, so if you can get the jump on them go for their backs for maximum effect.

Loyalists (AKA Novo Exército do Povo, or NEP for short) are the military force formerly led by Great Leader, now in a desperate struggle to maintain its grip on Novo Solo against the SNC, Corvids, and Spacers. The death of Great Leader and the attacks on infrastructure by the SNC's bid to retake the planet have significantly reduced their fighting power, but they are still the incumbent fighting force on the planet. Their units tend to strike a solid balance between durability and shielding, and mainly utilize ballistic weaponry in engagements. They aren't showy by any means but they'll get the job done.

Notable units to be aware of:

Infantry

Loyalists are the only faction to employ infantry divisions, and while they're just as fragile as you'd think, they come in large numbers and carry laser rifles and mortars that can take down overconfident mechs very quickly. On top of that, they're really small on the screen making them hard to spot. Good counters: weapons with large splash effects, splatting with your vehicle, audiokinetic pulse.

Prowlers

Tried and true tank design that packs a punch. Take these out ASAP or risk a crippling tank round in your flank or rear in a heated battle.

Bombucha

Every faction has 'kamikaze' units that will run up to you and explode, but the NEP's version has by far the biggest payload and the beefiest health pool. On the other hand, they're slow and make for big targets. Unless you're in a very big vehicle yourself, letting one get to you will spell the end of your run, so make these your #1 priority.

Long standing enemies of the NEP, the Corvids have been fighting a bitter revolution against Great Leader in the hopes of restoring power to the people. They are infamous for their unscrupulous methods and technological inventiveness. Their visual trademarks are units cobbled together out of scrap materials: cars, planes, even parts from Loyalist units. The have a wider assortment of weapons in their employ, but their heavier units almost always carry a limited salvo of rockets that they will use to try to win the upper hand at the beginning of a fight. Be ready to move or keep cover close by in order to not be overwhelmed. Corvids tend to have minimal or even zero shields.

Notable enemies:

Civilians?

Yellow is the universal sign of surrender on Novo Solo. Surely anybody wearing it is uninterested in being a part of the fight?

'Pompadour'

Corvids pack a lot of firepower into these small and nimble frames. Don't underestimate them by their size.

'Fatshoe'

Among several heavy-class Corvid units that pack rocket pods, and from a surprising range. When you hear that signature percussion, RUN.

Spacers is the catch-all term for off-world mercenaries who have a vested interest in the turmoil on Novo Solo. Some are contracted by the SNC, others are just here for their own piece of the pie. Their common traits are a lack of compassion for human life, advanced technology and a love of swarm tactics. On Freelance missions you'll find that the bulk of their fighters will concentrate into one big death ball somewhere on the map. Try not to blunder into it unawares. Spacer units tend to be very beefy with most of their health coming from shields- this makes ambush tactics very effective against them.

Notable enemies:

'Light mech 02' [Suggest a name to the devs!]

These litte bastards like to hang back and pelt you with miniature rocket swarms while you deal with other threats. Seriously not cool.

'Rounder'

Armed with long range pulsed lasers. Do you like hitscan weapons? Do you like tanks with high durability? Find cover or a way to nuke these bastards ASAP.

'???'

Death approaches! We are all mortal again! Now we can say 'yes' to death, but never again 'no'. Now, we must make our farewells: to each other, to the sun and moon, trees and sky, earth and rock, the landscape of our long waking-dream.

Hopefully this OP is enough to get people going. I plan to go through and add some more descriptions of in-game features when I have more time. Hugh, Jack, Harry and Dale are all good friends of mine and I hope you give their game a chance.

If you have some sweet .gifs or game-related media :justpost: and I'll throw it in.

This is a good game with great art, clever writing and I guess it plays pretty well too.

For the devs: Is there a specific mechanic between mechs speeding up after going in a straight line for a while or is something screwy on my end?

Are you in a tank? Their space bar ability is to go real fast for a short amount of time.

vvv Okay yeah that's weird, I haven't had that happen to me. I'll pass the word on but hopefully the release version doesn't do that!

I mean specifically legged mechs, they speed up after a while of going straight without turning for me, but it might just be the game being funky because I get that half speed bug as well.

Something to do with the acceleration stat maybe? I dunno.

Anyway, I've been making an effort of doing the campaign missions with all available premade vehicles, and 'Found Ghost' with the Party Van (Carlos/Bonesaw/AK Pulse) was easily the hardest so far. The map is small, you have no active camo, and if you're not extremely careful with your noise levels, you get more than the lovely van can handle. Felt good to finally beat the mission after crushing it fairly easily with the other 3 possible vehicles.

I believe it's just bad performance on your computer, as all vehicles hit top speed withing a few seconds of accelerating. Because of how physics based our game is we just slow down the whole game if your computer can't handle the load so that everything doesn't just break and allow to still be playable. There *is* a known bug with certain combinations of video cards and vsync that just cause the game to artificially drop in framerate. There's literally nothing we can do about that because it stems from the chipset side, but turning off vsync should fix it, alternatively simply tabbing in and out of the game will fix that if that's your issue.

If you've got a good computer though and it's not the vsync / tabbing thing please post in the technical forums and we'll have a look at it.

Orv

It's definitely my computer being just this side of garbage, when I blow up enough stuff it gets a little on the slow side but not crazily unplayable or anything. Thanks for the answer.

I have to say again, I love Corvid vehicle designs. The Swordfish agrav and the Fatshoe mech :shobon:

The tanks are pretty cool too.

I need some advice on using the audiokinetic pulse device. Usually when I get stuck with it in campaign missions I barely ever use it because it does poo poo-all against enemies with their shields up, barely even stuns and tends to get put on vehicles that can't afford to be that noisy and/or destroy that much cover. Does it go any better with guns that strip shields, like Pinch or Lockdown?
