There was an episode where they had to go through a region of space with proximity mines or something, and Janeway said to Paris "what's the first thing they teach you about warp speed?" and he had some stupid rhyme like "only fly straight, get through the gate" or something equally dumb.

They wound up programming the autopilot to fly for a bit, drop out of warp, turn, fly for a bit, drop out of warp, turn, repeat until they were clear of the trouble.

All that instead of, you know, flying under or over the problem area. Trek always forgets that space has 3 dimensions.

To be fair a lot of sci-fi does, and when they do they go insane with it, like 40K and the Tyranids taking a mother-loving huge detour (Hive Fleet Leviathan and Hydra)

It's pretty good, but it'll be better in a few months once the third content patch is out.

That must have been exclusive to the plot of the episode, then. TOS, Nex Gen, and DS9 all had turns at warp.

Oh, you can turn at warp, it just makes everyone on the ship poo poo their pants.

Those poop auto-transporters get a workout during warp turns.

Why is it every other federation starship is incompetent or run by jackasses? Even in voyager, equinox had captain evil, and the prometheus got hijacked. Ds9 had that evil admiral in charge of the lakota, and that ship transporting Dukat got ambushed and blown up. TNG has too many to mention.

It's probably the only way you can make a crew that constantly gets nearly destroyed by their own holodecks look remotely competent.

All the terminal gently caress-ups in Starfleet are promoted to Admiral whenever possible.

Guess what kind of promotion Janeway got when they returned home?

Yeah, Admiral Kirk stole a starship even and was let off pretty lightly.

Stole a starship and then blew it up so he could access a restricted planet. And he sabotaged a friendly ship in the process of the theft.

Well, that ship was gonna have a crew of lizards if the transwarp wasn't sabotaged, but yes, very unbecoming of an officer. Can't believe they gave him an identical ship with the same name and the same crew who rebelled.

He also killed Christopher Lloyd too, which should be a capital crime.

Earth is a utopia populated by well adjusted people. The outliers have a propensity for reckless decisions and danger. Starfleet wasn't just created for protection and exploration but to get the malcontents off the loving planet.

No. Just similar characters played by the same actor. That was Voyager's first mistake right out of the gate.

They couldn't really help it. Since TNG accepted scripts from outside writers, they would have had to pay royalties to the scriptwriter for every episode that Paris was in.

the bad pilot: dead
Nick Locarno: became Tom Paris
Sito Jaxa: dead or spoonhead rapeslave
Wesley: being molested by the Traveler on the other side of time

Wesley came back from his travels, he was in a deleted scene from nemesis. It was more of a "gotta have the whole cast here for the last time" kind of a thing. Although in the novel when he goes back to the traveller, and sees that data dies, he asks the traveller if he can go back and stop it. Traveller says no.

From an old Macleans article...

quote:

The first thing detectives from the Toronto police sex crimes unit saw when they entered Roderick Cowan's apartment was an autographed picture of William Shatner. Along with the photos on the computer of Scott Faichnie, also busted for possessing child porn, they found a snapshot of the pediatric nurse and Boy Scout leader wearing a dress "Federation" uniform. Another suspect had a TV remote control shaped like a phaser. Yet another had a Star Trek credit card in his wallet. One was using "Picard" as his screen name. In the 3 1/2 years since police in Canada's biggest city established a special unit to tackle child pornography, investigators have been through so many dwellings packed with sci-fi books, DVDs, toys and collectibles like Klingon swords and sashes that it's become a dark squadroom joke. "We always say there are two types of pedophiles: Star Trek and Star Wars," says Det. Ian Lamond, the unit's second-in-command. "But it's mostly Star Trek."
