happyhippy posted:How many polygons are in the average SC ship does anyone know? Wish I could help on the poly count...they actually produced a fairly decent pic of the LoD tri counts for the Starfarer several months back. With that said, there are a couple interesting things in their assets. For some of their ship models, they do 5 LoD models. Looking at the P-52 they have separate models for the P52 in the hanger and the flyable one. The hanger one has 4 LoD models, where as the the flyable one has 5. Turrets and damage states they usually only go to 3 LoD. And of course there are several ships that only have 4 LoD models. The naming conventions, folder structures, etc. are all over the place. You finally see things have finally evolved cleanly when looking at the Xian Scout. Of course that is missing a seat, oh well. The Starfarer looks like a clusterfuck how that was put together just based on looking through the files.

Don't forget that each bullet and missile is supposed to be simulated being loaded and fired and not abstracted in any way. Lmao. The drunk guy on Wingman's crew asking Chris if you would be able to get caught and killed in the missile loading mechanism was so loving funny.

Secret side missions behind enemy lines for intel, better crew bonding, and better weapon unlocks and stuff? Sounds a lot more fun than trying to find all 18 of the Rorke files in Ghosts... Were the Wright Brothers even laughed at? Powered flight was a huge area of interest for a bunch of people at the time. It's not as if the Wright Brothers thought of their machine in a vacuum there were plenty of other similarly designed planes before theirs, they just happened to be able to get their hands on a light enough engine.

I will say the guys doing the hardsurface modelling are good at what they do but I wonder if they're all pulled from the movie industry where everything is pre-rendered. Everything looks like it has millions of polys and would kill a game engine just looking around the room, let alone being one ship, of a fleet of ships, with dozens of players and npcs milling around it. Making pretty cg poo poo is easy these days if you have no constraints.

Dunno. I'm sure there were some people who laughed at them simply because of how many planes had failed before. I'm inclined to think it's like the myth of everyone thinking the world was flat until Colombus tripped over America: there were some dumbasses who believed it, but anyone with an actual education knew differently.
