The last bit of anything hockey related for the rest of the summer before the N/V thread turns into food/drink/fashion/wood carving chat: free agency!

When is it: July 1st

Notable Free Agents

Steven Stamkos
Everyone wants him but no one can afford him. Also recently had blood clot surgery. So whoever gets him better hope this doesn't bite them in the rear end in the future. Staying Tampa!!

Eric Staal
As if having Marc Staal being a shadow of his former self wasn't enough, the Rangers acquired his big brother from the Hurricanes to do... something. He wasn't very good, whatever it was.

Milan Lucic
Vancouver will sign him for big bux because Jim Benning is an idiot like that.

Shane Doan
Just retire already.

Patrik Elias
Ditto.

Dan Hamhuis
Benning strikes again!

And the rest: https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2017/caphit/all/all/ufa

Speculate who is going where!
Talk about how your team just massively overpaid this 3rd line grinder that'll totally turn them around!
Laugh at other teams' misfortunes!

Happy Summer!

e: I give up on manually tracking signings. Here is the NHL tracker. It's very good.

vancouver is gonna sign troy brouwer for like 35 mil over six years and some defenseman who once played for boston (is kevan miller a free agent? probably him)

news will come out that lucic, okposo, backes and eriksson were all offered more money and longer term by vancouver but they chose to sign elsewhere

Wasn't the rumor that Dallas made an offer for Hamhuis, but Benning didn't think it was enough so rather than get something for him he got absolutely nothing? I know Hamhuis had the NTC but I thought he waved it for Dallas.

As I understand it this was not a Benning blunder but an Aqualini blunder, since I guess there's some kind of feud between the Canucks' ownership and the Dallas Stars' ownership. Though on the flip side you'd think Dallas was far from the only team interested in Hamhuis considering how many playoff teams went into the deadline needing some help on the blueline.

I'd like to see Calgary pursue somebody like Enroth, or Hutton to back up Elliott (assuming they sign him). Maybe Jason Demers, too. They've got a decent amount of cap space. Hopefully they don't spend a crazy amount on signing Elliott.

Wasnt it a bunch of teams looking to grab him for a playoff rental? Dallas, Chicago and Washington were the 3 I remember specifically.

Yes and the Canucks were not convinced, at the trade deadline, that they were not making the playoffs, even though it was obvious to everyone else.

He said after the Cup win that he wasn't decided either way. If he re-signs, he'll be the 4c. If not, it will likely be Sundqvist.

Can't understate how much Cullen owned this year though. Had like 25% o-zone starts and still managed a positive Fenwick. Sundqvist looks like he'll be a nice little player too though. He had some pretty good games when he was in.

I would have to think that if Cullen decides to play another year he'll either want to make as much money as possible, which precludes a return to the Penguins, or return home to finish his career and transition into retirement, which for him is Minnesota.

Cool let's give the grinder more money and term than your 1st line winger.

Did no one tell Montreal the sad tale of Bryan Bickell? You do not give poo poo-mucky grinder types money or term, it never ever ever works out in your favor.

Shaw can't even sniff Gally's jockstrap and they pretty much have to give that guy a stupid contract when the time comes, too. Which'll be right before his tiny body starts to shatter, which it will.
They always do.

This is what happens when you disrespect Cam Neely
Hard to say what Dallas might do in free agency, they got plenty of cap space but not many targets are a real fit with the team. Jim Nill has declared that the Stars will not be giving out any contracts for either term or big money, so it's probably depth signings for the Stars if anything - they might just roll into next season with what they have now.

Still holding out hope for a big trade.

4 mil seems to be pretty standard these days for a 30 point bottom 6 player. Shaw isnt some loving mindless grinder or goon, he can still play decent hockey and is great at drawing penalties.

The problem is that you dont sign bottom 6 players for 6 years Bergevin you knob. :argh:

The real fun of living wisely is that you get to be smug about it.

If Ladd comes back it would make me sadd. The Jets need to move on and the forward depth is the best it's ever been.

Tbh the only signing I'd expect would be a middle or bottom pairing defenseman they wouldn't mind losing to the expansion draft.

george richards says the panthers are targeting a skilled winger (good) and are feeling good about the blueline (eh) and are gonna be spending (yay)

the only three wingers i can see them targeting are okposo, eriksson, or maybe stempniak, nobody else seems to fit their profile too well. the pairings i would guess end up as something like ekblad/yandle, matheson/pysyk, kindl/petrovic if they stick with what they have now which is okay but i'd like to see them bring in one more player that's not kampfer to strengthen that up.

The story seems to be that Dallas offered the same package they offered to Calgary for Russell except the conditional 1st was a 3rd round pick. The Canucks countered with the conditional 1st thing (possibly at the behest of ownership), Dallas got pissed and just offered that exact package to Calgary. Dallas then circled back and offered that same 3rd round pick straight up for Hamhuis, but by then the Canucks just hung up. There's also a rumour that the Canucks turned down an offer of Dano and a 1st from Chicago for Hamhuis the week prior because they weren't sold on Dano and thought they could start a bidding war. Obviously that didn't materialize.

It was not a good day.
