I still can't believe how much Williams pit crew has turned around this year. They were a laughing stock last year.

I was there yesterday and this is very true. The best sounding car there for me was a gorgeous little Ferrari 312P Spider. It is, as ever, an amazing place to go.

Plus I met Nik Blackhurst and Richard Brunning and got to sit in Binky, it was a good day.

Were they driving it around the track?

No.

It does have a fuel tank now though, so it's getting a little closer to the point of maybe considering the possibility of driving it.

When your car makes noises like a lowered car is prone to do you kinda learn to ignore them...

When it comes to machining stuff, I generally only understand every 3rd word. But goddamn if I didn't watch those videos.

I think thats my stretch goal. Learn fancypants machining techniques.

They'll spend millions on dumb flashy lights when it would end up cheaper to just re-profile the road down a foot.

That depends on the what's under the road (compacted earth? hard granite bedrock?), how long they'd have to shut down the rail bridge during the process, how much traffic actually flows through there...

The bridge itself is plenty loving sturdy and isn't gonna get damaged by those hits, the DOT isn't gonna overhaul the intersection just cause a few dummies can't read the sign. And yes, 100+ over like 5 years is "a few".

Longpig Bard
Dec 29, 2004

100 crashes in 5 years at an intersection is a fuckload.

Fender Anarchist

Point being, if they could have solved the height issue without inordinate cost they probably would have by now. Remember they can't just do the bit under the bridge, they'd have to do a certain amount leading up to it, and there's a cross road on the camera side so they'd have to re-grade that too. Add in moving whatever utilities might run under said streets and it starts adding up to a lot more than putting up fancy signs that dumb people will ignore.

There is that water sign thing that some tunnels use to prevent wrong-way drivers. But this is 11foot8, where they probably don't have the money for that nor the "life-saving" impetus.

Yeah, that's not really an option:

The 76-year-old bridge cannot be raised, because nearby railroad crossings would also have to be raised. The street cannot be lowered, because a major sewer line runs only four feet (1.2 m) under Gregson Street

It's way cheaper for the town to let retards run into their guard beam (they never even hit the bridge - saves on bridge safety inspections post-crash) repeatedly after warning them a few times, because the retards and their insurance companies pay for that.

And yeah sewer lines and railroad bridges are not easily moved and even without either of those, this would likely be a several million dollar construction project. Construction in the middle of a town is not cheap.
