My brother and his friends who worked at Cabela's used to complain about the weird customer groupthink that was going on. They used to get people in asking for the Cabela's brand riflescopes, and I guess that makes sense when it's one of the cheap ones that costs 2/3 of what the competitors do, but when people came in to drop $700+ on an Alaskan Guide and some of the guys would point out that they could get a Leupold or Nikon and even entry level Zeiss for that price and it wouldn't fall apart in two years, a lot of customers would get indignant and swear that the Cabela's house brand (most of it made offshore by lowest bidder) was either better, or that people were "paying for the name" on one of the real brands. Of course there were people who refused to believe that Cabela's would put their name on something that wasn't US made. The company got wise to this with the scopes and started using it to their advantage by labeling the flat black scopes with a tiny, transparent sticker with "MADE IN CHINA" written in flat black.

I got to watch that effect with a cornhole game. Someone pulled out one and my father-in-law asked if it was from Cabela's and nodded his head in approval. It doesn't seem like a bad store. It's definitely more of an 'amusement park' atmosphere than serious hunting & fishing, though.

They just opened a new Cabelas store here in Richmond VA and it's the saddest piece of garbage of a hunting/fishing store ever. I remember from the age of 5 up practically drooling over Cabelas catalogs and dreaming of actually going to one of their huge amazing stores one day (the closest one was a good two states away at the time). So you can imagine how pumped I was when I found out they were opening one just a few miles from my house. I went in a day after the grand opening and my disappointment was supreme. It was the size of a Target (and not a Super Target either), had poo poo for selection (the "fly-fishing" section was literally two endcaps pushed together) and everything was a good 20% more expensive than the Bass Pro Shops a few miles down the highway. Even the fish in their goofy fish tank looked sad and diseased. What was really depressing was the number of employees. There must have been at least 3 employees either listlessly milling around or chatting in small groups for every customer in the store, with a bored looking cashier at every register. I feel sorry for all those new hires because that place is going to tank so incredibly hard. Like I said there's a big beautiful BassPro just a few miles down the road, as well as a Green Top and a Dick's nearby as well. Who ever thought A: that location was good, and B: they could get away with a smaller, shittier version of a normal Cabelas probably won't have a job for too much longer.

A cryptic hint for anyone who has the time or interest, look into any major company getting an automated or database HR/benefits/etc they will be burning a few million jobs within the year. A lot of financial and insurance companies are about to start on massive lay-offs this year and are doing it with simplified tools for HR departments to completely slash large quantities of employees simply to save money on the normal legal paperwork used in termination now being automated instead of a full legal department running individual firing cases. Slash and burn is coming this year. That's all I can say about it. Otoh, I really think we're going to see a big drop in a few chains this year. Carls/Hardees, DQ , chronic taco's and the Jersey mikes sub places. I think we'll see a humorous success of the fully automated McDonalds and other chains if they can arrange a good lease on the hardware. Coke is doing extremely well with the new dispensers with the slingshot system/segway guy. I see a new growth in Korean/Japanese Barbecue places, both buffet and a la cart. Minimum wage laws getting shafted and more fully automated systems integrated to the warehouse and delivery industry. Follow all that up with some creative changes to fiscal entities and pornography laws and we have a pretty batshit insane year ahead.

So are you saying HR departments are getting eliminated through automation or are you saying automation in HR departments is going to make it easier to lay off employees? Come on, Future-Boy, make sense. You'd think 8 years of President Trump would make future-people's vocabulary simpler.

WD lays off about 500+ in June, and a much smaller Seagate lays off 1600 in July... with rumors even more of their end-user support is getting outsourced to poo poo-tier companies in Asia. HGST is about the only safe thing to buy lately.

I wonder what their long term plans are since 3+TB SSDs will be shipping soon? They won't be price competitive with mechanical drives for a while, but within 10 years or so there probably won't be any reason to buy a spinning disk for consumer or enterprise applications.
