The Adventures of Hourai High: Transfer Student Dramabomb is a Japan-only RPG released in 1996 for the Super Famicom. It's based on the table-top and play-by-mail RPG Hourai Gakuen no Bouken!!, borrowing the location, characters, and elements of the original text.

The writing and atmosphere are like a mix between Earthbound and a Rumiko Takahashi comic, while the system combines elements similar to FFV's job system and Persona 3/4's Social Links. Joined by a colorful cast of characters (some of which aren't even human), we'll be surviving a year in the oddest school in Japan.

About the LP

Thanks go to Aeon Genesis for releasing a translation patch for this game back in 2011.

Game text will be in regular dialogue while my commentary will be in italics.

This will be a 100% run, and I'll be showing off everything in the game.

No spoilers, please.

Update 1 - School's in session

BGM: Title

As a note, the original Japanese subtitle is "Tenkousei Scramble," or "Transfer Student Scramble."

The music, which sounds a lot like a Genesis game (seriously, the soundtrack's bass is wack at times) was composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, most famous for his work on Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy Tactics.

I found almost nothing about either J-Wing or Youentai on the web, so their lack of credentials which might be why this game never achieved any stunning popularity.

For this playthrough I will be using the boy character, but I will be showing off all of the girl-only content as well.

BGM: Airplane

Onboard: a group of students due to transfer to Hourai High in April.

Pilot 2: Yeah... That was a pretty good nap!
Pilot 1: Still, I didn't expect we'd go right off-course like this just for having a little snooze...
Pilot 2: You really are a veteran pilot. Master of the skies! Still, I'm not surprised considering SOMEONE was up all night doing... you know what.
Pilot 1: Er... right. You can leave the compliments out now, OK?

Um, can I check your piloting licenses?

Pilot 1: I wouldn't be in a hurry to go to that weird Hourai High School or whatever if I were them. "Oh no! I'll be late for my first day! Everyone will only remember me as the kid who was late! Whaa! Whaa! Boo hoo!"
Pilot 2: ...

Here is our intrepid hero, battle-weathered by terrible airplane food, annoying passengers, and hours of boredom on a long flight.

: What? You'll be late for the opening ceremony? I'm sorry, but... The pilots fell asleep and flew all the way to Alaska, so we're...a little behind schedule.
: ....!
: Look, there's nothing I can do... We'll land soon, OK?
: ...! ......!!

: ...Fine. If you want to get there that soon, I'll get you there!

While I'm sure this is a viable option, I'd really like to discuss this first-

BGM: Tension

Here's our first peek at the island. It looks normal enough, but, well...

BGM: Opening/Ending

Hourai High first came to this island filled with strange creatures roughly 70 years ago. It was soon followed by huge buildings, hospitals, towns, airports and even a train service. The students rule Hourai - they run the infrastructure, the clubs and the committees. Unsurprisingly, the place is like a magnet for oddball kids from all over the country.

BGM: Tension

Well, I suppose this is one way to make a first impression...

Bonk.

Teacher: Wh-what was that? Is it a UFO?! ...How dull.

: Teacher! Roku's passed out!

: Right away!

BGM: School 1

: Er, anyway, who are you?

: What? You're a transfer student? ...You were thrown out because you were going to be late?! ...You were thrown out of the plane by the stewardess?!
: That's... That's quite a story. Well, never mind. Go to the Principal's office with your home room teacher to apologise for your misconduct later.

Here comes our teacher now.

: Please, don't pull any more stunts like that. The other teachers already look dow--
: A-Anyway, let's go and apologise to the principal. We'll go to the classroom afterwards.

I'm a good kid, really! It wasn't totally my fault, you know.

: No matter how late you might be to the ceremony, you can't just sky dive in, you know!

: And then for some reason they just made me principal of the whole school! I have no idea what they're playing at. I mean, I only just became a teacher, so I don't know anything about running a school. But maybe I'm...

: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm such a chatterbox! Teehee! Now, this is your homeroom teacher...

BGM: School 2

: Make sure our new classmate feels welcome, OK? Now, let's start today's lesson!

It's time to name our protagonist! I need a name for our main man, as well as a name for his lovely female counterpart. We have a 5-letter limit.

These sound like a plan. And wow, this game's sprites remind me of FF6.

I wonder what the preceding TRPG was like. I'm guessing that it's not been translated (having been published before the widespread availability of splatbooks on PDF), but I know that Japanese TRPGs generally tended towards one-shots and episodic play rather than lengthy campaigns.

The TRPG is available to legally download for free, but yeah, nobody's ever taken a crack at translating any of it. The story is up to the GM, of course, but it seems that a lot of the story revolves around exploring the island, stirring up trouble with various factions within the school, and finding ruins and other remnants of ancient civilization. Down the road I might do an update where I look into the game, but the video game hasn't introduced all of the concepts found within the original TRPG yet.

Update 2 - Showing the new kid around

BGM: School 2

Due to his unique entrance, our protagonist has been given the name Leroy while his adventurous female counterpart is Lara.

On your birthday you're given a special surprise. I decided to go with February.

Your bloodtype, as far as I can tell, does absolutely nothing. But to go with the events of the day, Leroy is a totally warped type AB.

BGM: Hospo Editors' Room

: Everyone just calls it "Hospo" for short. Now then, there's something that we need your help with.

: Roku was hurt badly in the accident and he's laid up in the hospital. Now we're too short on staff to make the next issue of Hospo... Plus, we gotta pay for Roku's medical expenses...

: We decided to have you help us out in producing Hospo. What do you think? Great idea, right? And if you don't like it, you can pay the medical fees.

Well, I suppose it was technically my fault that he got hurt... So why not.

: My name's Daichi. This is Hinako, and he's Haru. They're both Hospo staffers too.
: ...Oh, yeah. Lemme give you a tour of the campus before we get started. Give me a shout once you've had a look around the building. I'll be waiting at the gates.

And for anyone who was wondering...

These are the kind of people we're dealing with.

Back in the classroom, we can learn more about Hourai.

Leroy and the rest of the Hospo gang are second-years, so we have to go down a floor to get to the entrance.

The same could be said for real life, couldn't it, random blue-haired student.

: You use the hospital for things like making a record of your adventure and healing illnesses and stuff.

BGM: Field

: The school is based in the centre of Utsuho Island, and is made up of three blocks: East, North, and South.
: The East Block is the most important, with buildings like the central campus, Committee Centre, Assembly Hall and stuff.

: There's also Side Street, filled with restaurants and stuff. It's the place to go if you want a bite to eat or go for coffee.

: OK, I'm going to give you an injection now, so please hold still.

: Hey! Please, hold still!
: Actually, there's someone I want you to meet...

Yeah, it's me.

Roku proceeds to get so mad that he charges at me...

...before eating a needle to the head.

: Hey, I warned you to hold still! You were thrashing about so much, the needle went into your head!
: Anyway, I think your injuries should clear up in about... only a month. Oh ho ho ho!

: You got something against me? It's your fault that I--
: Whoa, hold on a sec, Roku. We're here to apologize for what happened. And besides, you're acting kinda...
: Ah, shut up, shut up! Things like this always happen around that new kid! Just get out of here!

: Hmph. I wouldn't look forward to it. Hey, transfer student... I'll pay you back for this. Mark my words!

Scary words from a man with caterpillars for eyebrows.

Daichi leads me over to Side Street.

: But it's not all about food here - you can also buy clothes and other stuff here too.

There's a few people wandering around and in houses, some of who aren't even Hourai students or staff.

Me too, old man.

This sign, reminiscent of another SNES RPG, unfortunately never came true and no other video games based on Hourai ever came out.

Good to know, even if it's a little strange.

Though there's several restaurants here, there's not much of a reason to use them since there's far easier and less expensive ways to heal yourself.

Alright, let's head on out.

: You can also find Shinobazu Lake, where people like to hang out and relax, as well as the Club Centre.
: There's loads of clubs to join, so I think you'll be going to the Club Centre a lot in particular.

: Go ahead and ask about the details at the counter. I'll wait here.

So, clubs. Clubs are analogous to jobs or classes in other games in that they determine your skills. There are 33 clubs total in the game, though not all of them are found in the Club Centre. Some skills are offensive and some are defensive, some raise stats, and some have an effect out of battle.

Each character can only be a part of three clubs at a time. However, if you completely master a club then you get to keep the skills you learned and can then replace that club with another. There is a reason that you might want to keep a mastered club, though: when you have one person in two particular clubs, they will learn a combo technique.

There are two things that may bar somebody from joining a club: club type and level. Some clubs have a special prerequisite, but those two are the ones you'll usually be seeing. Each club is of a specific type (Sports, Culture, Science, and Jungle), and each character has a set of club types that they can join. The protagonist has all four club types, so their options are huge.

I'll be showing off the Club Centre in another update, but for now Leroy joined Baseball (defense buffing skills), Football (increases HP), and Cheerleading (increases GP, this game's version of MP).

: Swing by the Hospo base again after class tomorrow. See ya!

Man, this place kinda looks like a dump. Lara, on the other hand...

She stays in a pretty pink skyscraper.

And has guards on watch 24/7.

After seeing the boys' dorm, not really.

: My name's Julia, and I'm here from the US of A! Nice to meet you!

We might as well make the most of the boys' dorm and explore.

There's a hidden passageway beneath the stairs that leads to another section of the boys' dorms.

: Protecting her is my mission - she's more important to me than Mom, baseball, AND apple pie!

Is it a demon?

As Daichi said, we have a busy day tomorrow so we should retire for now.

Update 3 - The first assignment

BGM: Hospo Editors' Room

: Er... Ahem. Let's get out there right away and start gathering material! What are you supposed to do, you ask?
: Well...Hospo covers the stories that the stuck-up newspaper club won't print, like school gossip and scandals... Well, Hospo is a real newspaper that specialises in that kind of stuff. So, that's what we're gonna be looking for.
: For now, let's check out the Student Council meeting taking place at the Committee Center today!

And we're off on our first assignment! Haru and Hinako are apparently too busy to help, so it's just Daichi and Leroy this time.

First I stop by the store and use my meager spendings to get armored up. The store with the bread sign sells items while the one with the shirt sign sells armor. Both are run by a company called Mamejima Logistics. I won't be worrying too much about equipment because of a certain fact shared by a reader:

Simon The Digger posted:

Equipping weapons and armor in this game does absolutely nothing. Due to a screw-up in the code, whenever a battle starts your stats are reverted to their base no-equipment amount, and as soon as the battle ends your stats go back to what they should be. There are more details here, for those who are interested.

BGM: Dungeon

This music doesn't bode well.

There's a few denizens roaming around the first floor.

The second floor is home to the Public Safety Committee's office.

All I did was crash through a roof and rack up potentially massive amounts of expenses in property damage and medical bills, how does that make me a bad guy?

Moving onto the third floor.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call myself an "ordinary" student...

The third floor is also host to a meeting room.

: I won't beat around the bushdio - I'm not happy about working with those Public Safety goons one bit.

: Come to think of it, isn't Shin running too? Have you seen him around Side Street?

The last stop is the fourth floor, presumably where our target lies.

: Yes! I want to sit in this chair! So when the vote rolls around, please vote for me! Don't let that Shin guy win!

The Hourai TRPG was popular enough to have spin-off novels, and Mutsumi is one of the characters we'll encounter that comes from the novels. She showed up in the novel "Crime of Hourai High!" (Hourai Gakuen no Hanzai!).

But enough messing around, let's get down to business.

: Combine that with their struggle against the myriad dangers of the jungle alongside their friends, and...
: They would certainly develop the strongest bodies and the purest minds, as well as experience true friendship.

: Got it?!

: ...Still, that was a weird meeting. Why did everyone just agree on some weird "joust" in the jungle for the festival?
: And that voice... I have a feeling I've heard it somewhere before...

Oh no, here comes trouble.

Busted!

: They're just a bunch of thugs who bully the weak! Let's give 'em the slip while we still can! They won't let us off lightly if they catch us!

BGM: Battle

Alright, battle time. Hourai has a basic turn-based system, with the one big difference being something that I can't even show off yet. Of note is that the run away option is instead "Apologise"; if successful, then the enemy will be swayed by your apology and let you off.

Like I said, basic stuff.

When the enemy's HP is getting low, the hand above their head will turn yellow and then red.

After winning the battle, Daichi and Leroy start the trek downstairs while battling off enemies. And oh, will you battle a lot. This game has a higher-than-average encounter rate for a 90s RPG.

The other two enemies in this building are the Safety Shrew...

And the Patrol Ronin.

Luckily, this is one of those RPGs where leveling up restores all HP and GP, so the encounter rate is balanced out a bit.

Guess we'll go out the back.

Leroy quickly became famous amongst the class despite only having just arrived. But there was one person who was displeased by this and was secretly jealous. He was Roku, who was injured and then had his scoop from his hands by none other than Leroy...

JUNGLE JOUST SLIPS UNDER RADAR

Hospo staff snuck into the Comittee Centre yesterday to bring you this report: The Student Council have approved the "Jungle Joust" as the main event for this year's athletics festival.

The Jungle Joust is based on a similar game common to Japan's playgrounds, where one player (the leader), carried by a team of others, must steal the hat of the leader of another team. However, this version has an important twist: it will take place in the jungle to the south.

The meeting was held by the unilateral decision of the Student Council, with the rest of the student body left in the dark. As a result, many students have protested the decision.

The Student Council responded as follows: "Wait, I thought this was just supposed to be a brainstorming session? Well, anyway, we've decided it now, so we can't change it!" This exclusive report comes from Hospo's new rising star, Leroy.

Extra Credit: Club Expo

Before we move onto chapter 2, I'm going to show off all of the clubs at the Centre. For anyone who doesn't care much about boring gameplay stuff, please feel free to skip this update!

The first floor is home to the Sports clubs. Most Sports clubs either raise stats or give you physical attacks.

Self-explanatory, and very helpful.

The next skill does damage x3 while the last skill causes all physical attacks to have a 100% hit rate and allows the character to use "Shoot" type weapons.

The next skill boosts all ally's defense by 30% while the last skill gives the character a 10% boost in skills and allows them to use "Throw" type weapons. It's the only defense-boosting move, so it's good to have on hand.

Self-explanatory, and also very helpful.

The next skill ups barehanded strength to 100% while the last skill boosts physical strength by 10% and allows the character to use "Strike" type weapons.

The next skill hits the enemy three times while the last skill causes the character's normal attack to hit twice as well as allow them to use "Cut" type weapons. This basically doubles your damage output and allows strong attackers to easily take down enemies in half the time.

Moving on, the second floor is home to the Culture clubs, most of which contain healing skills. There's some unique status effects in this game, including:
Pheromone - afflicted attacks their teammates
Amnesia - afflicted is unable to use skills
Doze - afflicted falls asleep and is unable to take any actions
Selfish - afflicted acts on their own
Shy - afflicted is unable to move

The next skill cures an ally of Amnesia while the last skill prevents the character from being afflicted with Pheromone.

Self-explanatory and one of the most useful clubs in the game.

The next skill allows charms to be equipped while the last skill allows accessories to be equipped. Like clubs, each character is only able to equip certain types of equipment and weapons, so this club's skills can circumvent that.

The next skill cures an ally of Selfish while the last skill prevents the character from being afflicted with Doze.

The next skill lowers all enemies' defense by 30% while the last skill increases the amount of money won after battle. Other than items, this is the only way to lower enemy defense.

The next skill cures all allies of Shy while the last skill prevents the character from being afflicted with Shy.

On the third and last floor are the Science clubs. A lot of them deal with inflicting status effects on enemies.

The next skill has a high probability of inflicting Selfish on all enemies while the last skill inflicts Pheromone on all enemies.

The next skill restores a fair amount of HP while the last skill restores a large amount of HP. This is the only club with HP-restoring skills that aren't combo techniques, so it's a good idea to have this club on a few people to restore HP without running out of GP in dungeons.

The next skill allows you to see the abilities of an enemy while the last skill increases the EXP the character receives after battle.

The next skill has a high probability of inflicting Doze on all enemies while the last skill inflicts Amnesia on all enemies.

The next skill annihilates all enemies for mid-damage while the last skill annihilates all enemies for high damage.

The next skill gives you a 75% chance of finding items after battle while the last skill gives you a high chance of finding a rare item after battle.

Update 4 - Field day

: Bah! Don't tell me you don't know about the Mind/Body Training Rule! It was approved yesterday!

BGM: Radio Exercises

Leroy proceeds to bumble around for the remainder of the exercises.

BGM: Hospo Editors' Room

: It looks like it's time for us to stick our noses into this.
: Alright! OK, then... I'll go and see if I can pick up any leads at Frapper's in Side Street. You can check out the Committee Centre.

: What? We've gotta strike while the iron is hot, you know!
: I guess you've never heard that haste makes waste. What about getting material on the strongest class for the Athletics Festival?
: That can wait!

Sorry, Hinako! Bye bye!

Hospo is on the case! This involves talking to a grand total of two people.

: And now this year is the Jungle Joust? They're even making us do radio exercises, too...
: This must be some kind of plot. But...we still have to attend...

Mmhm, yes, we'll be sure to take your accounts into consideration.

: Oh really? Which club?
: Er... The er, Cooking Club. Hey, Leroy! If we don't get back soon, our... er, buns are gonna burn!

: I don't want to end up getting surrounded by those things. Let's call it off for today!

: Understood? Now, proceed to the southern jungle! The southern jungle is further on south from the South Block, where the Club Centre is!
: There are many dangerous creatures outside and in the jungle. Be vigilant!

Now, before we head down to the Joust, there's some things to do now that we have free reign.

We got our first phone number from Mutsumi last chapter, so let's call her up! I'll be showing off all of the phone calls we can make each chapter.

: The student council elections are next month. I hope I can count on your support!

Next, it's time to show off what I couldn't last update. Other than EXP and money, you also get Friend Points (FP) when you battle. As you give a party member FP, their Friend Level goes up and the number of times they can use their Friend Skill without resting goes up. This maxes out when they hit the Best Friend level, where they can use it four times.

Each party member has a different Friend Skill. Daichi's is Body Barrier, which causes him to put up a barrier at the beginning of the turn that nullifies all attacks by the enemy. It goes down at the end of the turn.

I stop by the Club Centre real quick to get Daichi set up with the Football (+HP) and Cheerleading (+GP) clubs before heading off to the Committee Centre.

: Due to this, the train currently isn't running on any of those lines... You look like a civic-minded sort. Won't you help us get things running again?
: Here - as thanks for your support, I'll give this to you. You can use this to ride the train wherever you like to your heart's content.

BGM: Train

The train is our fast-travel system and, as the game progresses, we can fix all of the broken tracks and travel all over the island. Right now we can only travel between the three school blocks.

North from the school is Newtown.

BGM: Newtown (Day)

Newtown is similar to Side Street in that it's full of shops and amenities.

There's a building where you can store up to 64 items, but it takes money to take stuff back out so I won't be using it.

Newtown is also home to the Mamejima warehouse, but we can't get in.

There's one last interesting house here.

There's no door.

There is no door to the kitchen.

The only thing I can assume is that this woman is trapped in this kitchen, forced to forever be cooking food.

What kind of dark secret have I found lurking beneath the cheery exterior of this game?

That's all you have to say for yourself? You sick, twisted man.

Oh, never mind, turns out this house just decided to go with the architectural design of only being able to get to the kitchen through the bathroom.

Lady, you live with two weirdos.

Last on the agenda is the projection room. Throughout the game, new movies will be shown here, so let's check out the first one.

: We're running Penguin Special on the projector now.

: Great! We're about to start.

Penguin Special

Alright, time to head out to the jungle. Along the way I run into a few new enemies.

We have Safety Slapheads, Musketeers, and Nasty Teachers. Of particular note is the Nasty Teacher, whose spanking attack can ruin your day. It's a good idea to grind up a bit or else you'll get your rear end handed to you almost immediately.

BGM: Jungle

: Daichiii! You're late!
: Shut up! Do you know how long it took to find the right wooden sandals for the occasion?! I'm not just all muscle, you know! I can be fashionable too!

Yeah, lay it on me.

: You can start a joust with another team by running into them on the field.

On the left is Leroy's opponent while on the right is Lara's opponent.

: You score a point if the enemy team moves in the direction you picked. It works both ways. If you move in the direction the enemy picks, they'll score a point.
: Be careful, too. If you don't choose your command quickly during the enemy's turn, they won't wait for you. The team that score three points first will be the winner. At the end, the teams will be ranked by score and awarded a number of coupons depending on how well they did.
: Oh, and if you fight well and fill up the gauge on the top of the screen, you can use your special move! It's 100% guaranteed to score a point and it'll make you look cool. However, it'll reset the gauge back to 0 if you use it.

So, this game is basically a combination of the cavalry battle game and the "Look that way" part of Japanese rock-paper-scissors. It's a total pain because the enemy doesn't have any tell and so it's basically random. I of course cheated to do better, because there's no way I'm doing it normally.

Here's the "special move" the Honey talked about.

At the end, I stand alone on the battlefield.

We can't use the coupons until later, but they're used to get special equipment.

Let's go!

...Next time.

I won this avatar on a technicality this thick.
Is the number of coupons you get based on what place you finish or how many teams you defeat?

Yep, your rank is determined by teams defeated which determines the number of coupons you get.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

I like this idea of clubs determining your "class" and mixing and matching to get the effects you want. Are there other games that have that sort of mechanic?

Dungeons of Dredmor (a simple roguelike) has like 40 different skillsets, and you build your character by selecting...5, I think...of them. Each level up, you get to advance one of the skillsets by 1, getting you new abilities and/or stat modifiers as appropriate. It's a great concept that sadly doesn't seem to be used very often.

Goddammit this Cello is way out of tune!
Thanks for doing the LP of this crazy game! I wondered why when I played it after I got equipment that it didn't seem to effect me at all. Since it doesn't do anything, that makes perfect sense why grinding for that neat weapon or armor just wasted my time.
