Ginette Reno posted:I imagine Cullen is their first choice, and if he goes to Minnesota then they'd try for Schultz. Only problem is that Letang is literally the only right handed D on the roster. Granted, Daley plays on the right side despite shooting left and does fine, but other than that it's basically undersized Wilkes-Barre tweeners for RHD depth.

Is there a reason Kris Versteeg isn't signed yet? I thought he was pretty good with Carolina and LA last season and he'd be a perfect fit in the middle six for less than $2M I'm sure.

I guess it just seems weird to me that guys like Versteeg and other decent wingers are overlooked around the league even though they will only command a 1 or 2 year deal at less than $2M. Meanwhile Andrew Ladd, with similar stats, gets a 6 year deal and Matt Martin (who is way worse) gets a 4 year deal. Maybe there's something I'm missing.

Teams are probably focused on signing their RFAs and then will see what's out there to fill holes.

So Polak's AAV was announced or leaked or whatever and it's 2.25. That's a lot better than I expected. Also I missed this during the free agent day or whatever but Chad Ruhwedel went to the Pens on a real small deal that promises him more than his actual AHL salary. He's a smaller defenseman who went to NCAA route and put up good but not exceptional AHL numbers and saw a handful of NHL games. I wonder if the salary thing (and the tightness the Pens have with the cap in general) means he might get a shot at making the team.

Trevor Bird posted:It's all starting to make sense now. Make a Weber/Subban one. Make one with a blackness/60. While we're discussing puck moving defencemen, can somebody who's been following the game a long time explain to me why Greg Hawgood moved around so much? I know that there were unrealisic expectations around him coming out of junior (apparently got compared to Orr a bunch), but his PPG averages are pretty solid for defencemen in a bunch of seasons (career PPG of .47), yet he seemed to spend a lot of time in the minors and got traded a LOT (Stempniak-esque, even). Polak's cap hit makes sense, if only because with Cowen disputing his buyout the Leafs actually don't have space for much else. That arbitration's going to be an interesting one. Cowen was medically cleared by Leafs staff, then sent home to not get injured. He gets a second opinion after that and opts for elective surgery, overlapping the buyout period and technically rendering him ineligible. Arbitrator has to decide between protecting rights of injured players vs. setting precedent for otherwise fit players to avoid buyouts.

Considering they have almost no right handed defensemen right now and carried 8 defensemen on the roster as often as possible he probably does have a shot though, unless Jultz decides to take a near-minimum salary to come back.

Mason Raymond is hilarious to watch because he's actually a pretty effective offensive player but he's so high event and bad defensively that it's hard to justify him being on an NHL team. E: also this applies to Joffrey Lupul but only one of them got signed to one of the biggest contracts in Leafs history. Dave Nonis is terrible

Mason Raymond, he of skating with the puck really fast through the neutral zone and then falling down in the corner and losing the puck. He was once a great driver of possession
