A bunch of female athletes are either refusing to go or incredibly cautious about it because of what zika can and has done to pregnant women. One male athlete is freezing his sperm before he goes because he wants to ensure he can have a child with his wife without a threat of the virus.

These people are stupid. The odds of contracting Zika are extremely low. Especially when you factor that this is taking place in Rio (not East), in the Winter, and in an Olympic Village caked in insecticide (not to mention air conditioned quarters with screens).

If a female athlete is pregnant or planning to get pregnant shortly after the competition, they should probably avoid it. But idiots like Pau Gasol are at more risk of getting food poisoning than Zika (an incredibly mild virus in the scope of things).

I just talked to a professional outbreak control specialist two days ago who said Zika is very unlikely to spread meaningfully in the U.S. for the same reason malaria doesn't spread meaningfully here: because the U.S. has near universal air conditioning.

Olympic athletes are probably at very low risk for the same reason (they'll be housed in a semi-luxury fashion that will certainly include AC) but doubtless two or three of them will come home with the virus and the media will freak out about it.

Zika concerns for the olympics are beyond stupid. Aedes related infections peak in January-April and virtually disappear by August in Rio. You are going to get endless coverage of the handful of tourists who will contract it while in the north of the country who then show up in Rio. As for athletes withdrawing, most of it is people who didn't have much to gain from playing in the olympics allowing zika to be their cover.

As for the "state of financial disaster," that is less because of the state being in literal financial disaster, but because that declaration allows all sorts of emergency, no-bid contracts to go into play. It is the same thing that happened in the world cup: things are set up as a way to reward a poor job. Why deliver a stadium on time and on budget if you can have it only half done 2 months ahead of the event and then charge triple to pay for all that overtime?

Now, the worst thing about the olympics is that the police is going to kill a fuckton of people to make sure crime is down, and the local media is going to do everything they can to hide the continuation of the coup in place.

Well you have to remember that zika can be transfered sexually. The US basketball team might be able to start a pandemic all by themselves but then you throw in hundreds of young people at their physical peak well...life finds a way.

At the risk of defending Margary, this isn't even close to the same column. It's a takedown of the Decision, which...well isn't what's going on now. And it was a bad idea, I think LeBron would agree to that now a few hours after it aired.

for your consideration, a one mr. darren rovell. he lives in a world where there are no advertisements on the jerseys, browsers come with adblock by default, and everyone agrees that just a basic shoe with no additional features or logos is fine and shoes have no effect on performance. consider what it would be like to be an ESPN sports business reporter in...the twilight zone.
