That's it. Her arc is pretty horrid and utterly pointless, and not even in a "we're trying to show how pointless war is" way, she just doesn't even need to exist as a character. You can make justifications for why she is the way she is, but it doesn't change the fact that she doesn't actually add anything to the show besides another female character to put on the BD art. Claudia does have a function. It's just that her story is stretched out over multiple arcs, so we see the setup in the anime and not the payoff. This is one of the issues with just adapting the battle of the Thunderbolt Sector - it's really the prologue of the story proper, which is primarily geared at dealing with its fallout.

I watched the first episode of the Brave series (Brave Exkaiser?) and have every intention of watching the rest, in part due to it's shared DNA with Transformers. VOTOMS and Macross are very much on my radar too.

I've been wondering how one would go about adapting Gundam to live action without it coming off too hokey. So far, I've decided that you would have to cast the Zabis as an Italian crime family.

Especially with the success of Transformers as a way to convince producers/audiences to give it a chance.

Yeah, that's what they did in the Origin. The actual rationale is "it makes sense for them to detour through Mexico on their way from California to Jaburo (unlike detouring through Canada)" but it has the added benefit of making Amuro Latino.

And then cross the Pacific, win the tide turning battle in Ukraine, fly across Europe to Dublin, and THEN go to Jaburo. So on their weird roundabout trip, having Amuro's mom be further north works. But in Origin they just make a beeline straight for Jaburo, right?

I may be mistaken but I think Char has a line in which he basically goes " I don't go into battle with the intent to leave the suit behind"  or something along those lines. Char not wearing a normal suit just shows that he's arrogant. It's noticeable that he starts wearing one after lala dies, his confidence is shaken.

Well, while we're on the topic, I'm nearly finished with The Origin, finally. Gonna pick up volume 12 this weekend. Surprising no-one, I like it. But I also like how Job John is used throughout. He's not a crazy newtype badass like Amuro or Sayla, or as cool as Kai, but he's a solidly competent feddie pilot who manages to, through equal parts skill and luck, survive longer than any of the other regulars. Any other ship, Job would be The Man. He's the loving new meat draftee, kid barely old enough to shave when General Revil called him up, and he outscores all the vets. And on the White Base, he just fades into the background.

Unicorn episode 5. This one was really good right up to the last five minutes. Once the Unicorn turned into a magic green space popsicle, things just got lazy. That last fight between the Sinanju and the General Revil was nothing compared to the great hand to hand battle between the Banshee and the Unicorn. It felt like the ending battle was tacked on to make Full Frontal look threatening and Char-like by having him take down a battleship, but slaughtering all those mobile suits in quick succession felt more like a copout. Disappointing end to an otherwise solid episode. This show took years to finish, right? When exactly does the production delay happen, and is there a noticeable impact on the story? I started off pretty critical of the show's shortcomings, but episodes 4 and 5 have shown me there is some merit here.

There may be little extra bits of extra footage throughout the movie, as well. December Sky is the definitive version of Thunderbolt. There's no reason to watch the original shorts now it's out.

I do think the original shorts are better because I feel like the extended ending is little more than a preview, while the original ending is a pretty ominous cliffhanger.

Nope, and according to RightStuf, Sunrise opted not to release BDs overseas because they didn't think they'd sell (same with the Zeta trilogy). So the new DVDs use the HD transfer made for the Japanese BDs, but obviously at SD resolution. They're also sub-only per Sunrise because the old dub is not looked at favorably.
