What? It's a free digital entitlement generated from a license key. It's a legitimate, full copy of Windows. This comment makes no sense.

If this was adjustable with "advanced appearance options" in Windows 7's personalization controls, you can change it in this part of the registry:

This includes allowing you to export changed settings from the matching part in Windows 7

I missed this, but did you ever use andLinux or coLinux back about a decade or so? It's pretty much useless now because it only supports 32 bit Windows and Linux (due to not being able to be signed for 64 bit use), but that should be equivalent to the new Linux on Windows experience.

You could use the package manager, and run desktop linux applications if you installed an X server for Windows. Of course you were also sharing less than 4 GB of RAM between the two operating systems, so things could get bogged down.

Is there any specific information yet about how the Anniversary Update account-linked licenses are going to work with hardware upgrades? All I've read so far has been kind of vague and unsure about whether it'll work for major component changes.

My sister's in the situation where she wants the free upgrade to 10, but she also wants to upgrade the parts in her system soon (motherboard, CPU, RAM, main drive). Will the license work if she does that account linking process, then does a fresh install on the newly upgraded parts and goes through the activation troubleshooter? Or is it still unknown at this point? e: To clarify, I'm just talking about one system using her license in the end.

All still unknown, the stuff about account linking was on the insider blog -- so official -- but vague enough to leave plenty of "that's not what we meant" room to walk back. And they've not responded to any of the legion of reporters asking for clarification. After the terrible messaging a year ago (like when real MS employees were saying 7&8 keys would become 10 keys and work forever) you shouldn't count on anything we see it happen for real.

I figure with the way that MS has been just so hosed up about consumer strategy the last few years, even as we speak there are 30 executives all screaming about which way to actually have it work, and how to release the news.

But snag a 10 upgrade on the old machine and link an account just in case.

This is really pissing me off, hopefully someone here will be able to help out.

Recently upgraded from Win7 Home to Win10 Home. Things were working fine up until today, when I began having save game issues with Dishonored. While trying to figure out why it was failing to save the game, I discovered that the directory files were being saved to (not Program Files, I created a separate folder for my stuff back in Win7 because I knew there would be problems otherwise) had been set to read only. I attempted to remove the read only setting from the entire file, only for every file and folder to inform me that I did not have permission.

At this point, I have done the following:

1) Adjusted my user account permissions from "Debugger"(HA!) to Administrator.
2) Gave ownership of almost* the entire C drive to my user account, which again is set to Administrator.
3) Used RegEdit to turn off UAC, which apparently limits even Admin access to poo poo.

Above I mentioned that I had taken control of almost my entire C drive. If you guessed that the file I was not able to take ownership of was the file all the actually important to not be set to read only poo poo is saved to, you win a cookie.

I have attempted to follow the same process I used for taking ownership of everything else (right click, properties, security, advanced, Change Owner). When I did that on the C-drive, it brought up a new window that let me define a user account. When I do that on the file in question, a box pops up for a fraction of a second, immediately closes, and the Change button stays greyed out.

I have also attempted the alternative of downloading the take ownership registry file that lets you make that change from the right-click menu, but it doesn't appear to do a drat thing.

I'm been working on this for about three hours at this point. Going to drop this post here and then get a little sleep. I hope someone has a idea when I get back. :(

Windows 10 seems to have my Poweredge T20 that I use as a desktop (core i5-4960K using iGPU). It runs fine for a few days after first build, then eventually the display stops working (using DP). It's an issue with Windows assigning some setting that causes the monitor to likely go out of range. I can see the Dell boot logo (secure boot enabled) and after it starts the initial windows boot the monitor stops receiving signal.

I cannot figure this out out at all .. ordered a secondary GPU to bypass the integrated. Anyone have another idea?

Yeah, I guessed that was still the case. I'm just trying to figure out if I should push her to do her hardware upgrades before the free upgrade period ends. I'm sure she doesn't want to spend another $150 (CAD) to buy a license for 10 afterwards if she doesn't have to.

I don't hate Microsoft. If they're going to give you the option to turn that stuff off, they shouldn't make it difficult or more obscure though. All that does is irritate people who care about it. There will be plenty of people who will choose the express install and allow that fully. Or don't let people turn it off and be upfront about what it does. But this squirmy half-assed stuff just makes it look more suspicious. Just like the whole thing with updating people's systems without them specifically selecting it.

That process is literally the system kernel and the handler for a certain kind of paging. How many cores/threads do you have?

On my 4 core/8 thread system it usually idles around 1-2% CPU in normal circumstances, so 3% would sound about right for a system with fewer cores/threads, and especially with low RAM.

4 cores 8 threads too and 16GB of RAM. I had periods of time when it didn't use that much CPU and my computer fans would be off for much longer periods which was nice.

I would advise you to download the installer on a separate computer if possible (to put on a flash drive), and move as much stuff as you can off the small SSD temporarily to your main hard drive, before you do the install. That should give you enough room to safely perform the install. (You only need like 20 GB of free space or something to do the install, but it doesn't hurt to leave extra space)

Yeah, the upgrade will work OK on a 32GB system disk (if it's a fresh install of 7) but that ends up being so tight that when I tried it, I think I was forced to insert an external drive for the recovery image before the process would advance. If you have your 64GB drive over half full then you might have a similar experience and need an external hard drive or flash drive to make the upgrader happy. Of course, you can just blow up the recovery image once you're done if you are confident that you won't want to roll back.

You won't need to reinstall anything (besides some drivers, maybe) if you do the normal upgrade install, the default way it works. I mean if you had to move some programs off of the SSD temporarily to the hard drive, you'll need to move them back, but reinstall shouldn't be necessary.

Just make sure you run the setup from within Windows 7 to make it the easiest

If your SSD is full it's probably having a lot of write amplification. It's probably time to quickly buy a new one, image your old one to it, expand the volume and do your upgrade.
