Also at an advance screening one person called the film "fascist propaganda" The two other reviews that I've heard of basically said it was either okay or meh.

Apparently the military in the movie is not the SDF, but an "offensive-oriented" Japanese military (which is fine by me). If you want to know why this is controversial just google Article 9 Japan debate.

Are these reviews in English? Do they elaborate on that?

No, it's from internal sources another person knows. Apparently it's the Japanese military not being configured as the SDF. I can't add anything more unfortunately. That person hated the movie though and said it was as bad as Attack on Titan FWIW.

I could do with a recommendation. I watched a whole bunch of Godzilla films I rented on VHS from my local library as a kid, but all the memories of them have blurred into one enjoyable mess and I don't really remember which ones I specifically saw anymore (besides Mothra vs. Godzilla, which was my favourite.)

Anyway, I have a regular movie night with some friends where we tend to watch films that trend towards the funnier-goofier side of things and get drunk. Good times. I was wondering if someone could recommend a Godzilla film with some silly moments that would be good to watch with friends and drinks please?

Eh Hedorah is weirdly a mix of goofy and pure loving nightmare fuel. There is a lot of terrifying imagery in that movie.

I don't think Toho has a 35mm print for rental. They also charge (regardless of format) a lot per screening.

Combo that with while Toho really likes the AIP (they even have a beat to poo poo print of it in their LA offices) dub they won't allow any release of that for fear of getting sued by someone coming out of the woodwork (dubber), might explain why it's not being played a lot.

Random question...does anyone know if there's a subtitled version of Godzilla Island, that crappy showmercial Toho made in the late 90s to sell toys? There are DVDs kicking around, and the daily alternative to youtube has unsubbed episodes. Please disregard if this question is to much into :filez: territory.

vs. Hedorah, Final Wars, and vs. Megalon are all excellent suggestions for that type of Godzilla movie, but I'll stump for Godzilla vs. Gigan (aka Godzilla on Monster Island). The bad guys are cockroach people from space and Godzilla speaks!

I'm fond of Godzilla vs the Sea Monster for silliness. The whole opening with the human characters is silly. Most of the stuff on both islands is silly. And who can go wrong when "I know ! Let's wake up Godzilla !" is a reasonable solution to the character's predicament ?

I'll just quote this sentence from your video:
"Given that the British fantasy film Gorgo was not only released within the same year, but also preceded Mothra by several months, it is possible to hypothesise that this natural selection for monster survival was not coincidental, but rooted in a collective unconscious and universal renegotiation with dominant values in the wake of the Second World War."

Your delivery is stiff because you're clearly just reading from a script. Every second sentence is really long and filled with loaded terminology, which makes it hard to follow your train of thought. That sentence specifically is a loaded bombshell of a statement. It comes out of nowhere, and it goes nowhere. Please focus on one topic for more than ten seconds. I'd also urge you to make the subject matter seem less dry. Maybe focus on one thing you want to talk about, and really put effort into making it interesting.

Also, you let satan narrate your other video. :psyduck:

Fair enough. I retired the satan voice after the less than stellar response to it originally. I've got a lot of constructive stuff on my delivery needing to be more conversational in genchat, but what you're saying is also important: I need to tighten it up, cut some of the digressions.

Just a note that Rifftrax Live will be having a live theater cast of their Mothra show in late August, and even though they'll be doing their usual talking over the film it's a rare chance to see it on a big screen, as God intended.

Pretty much the first 2/3rds of the movie is Godzilla ignoring everything the military throws at him, and he even kills the adult Mothra, so it's pretty well-balanced IMO.
