Requiescat in pace.
I never put Insurrection as low as Nemesis, simply because Insurrection can be so easily ignored. The stakes are so low, everything is so cheap, it's really drat stupid, but you can tune it out effortlessly should you ever have to see it. While parts of it are outright terrible, too, the majority of the film is just like... plain oatmeal.

Nemesis, conceptually, could have been strong. I mean, it probably was never gonna be great, but it could have at least been around First Contact good. But everything goes loving wrong with it, over and over, in ways so absurd you'd think anyone could see something was deeply wrong. It's such a botch job you'd almost think it was on purpose.

Insurrection was tame, and a letdown coming after First Contact, but if you had shot exactly that script in 1992 as a two-parter it would have been solid Trek.

Well, manual steering and stuff would be dumb, but the core of the movie would have worked fine.

Nemesis was just :stare: through and through.

Nemesis I still don't understand.

Blood and cloning r something? If they had just remade Lifeforce as a Star Trek movie it would have been much better.

In the sense its failure drove him into a spiral of depression and alcoholism that he had to pull himself out of with acting, yes it is.

Basically :

quote:

Baird didn't have a background in Star Trek; he was aware of the films and television series but didn't consider himself to be an expert on the subject

quote:

Despite Frakes being on the cast, and having directed the previous two Star Trek films, Baird decided not to seek his opinion on the direction of the film. He said that there was resentment on set, as Frakes was completing work on directing the film Clockstoppers as production on Nemesis began

quote:

Berman has stated that about 50 minutes worth of scenes were filmed, but cut (though not necessarily all of them were usable in a final form)

quote:

He wanted to add energy to the actions scenes and added some scenes, such as the car chase. He called that scene a "signature piece" for the film which turns dark after the crew is put in danger by the inhabitants of the planet.

quote:

Actors LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge) and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) have spoken critically of director Stuart Baird, criticizing him for not watching any of the episodes of The Next Generation.[24] Sirtis has bluntly called Baird "an idiot."[25] Jonathan Frakes, while praising both the character of Shinzon and actor Tom Hardy (who played the role), said that if he himself had directed, as he had done with the previous two Trek films, he would have made the film less villain-centric and given more screen time to the regular The Next Generation cast.[26]

All from wiki. I'm sure memory alpha has a lot more thorough explanations of what went wrong. From what I've seen online, it was a mess from conception.

Honestly, First Contact is not all that great either. It has some pretty great ideas, especially the Borg invasion of the Enterprise, but that storyline and the one about First Contact clearly should have been separated movies.

First Contact is fine, even if it's a bit schlocky. Also a movie just about the Borg taking over the Enterprise would be a complete waste, they had much higher stakes than that on the show.

Not long after WHM covered it, it's the tenth anniversary of Lady In The Water and pop culture podcast Thirty Twenty Ten namedropped We Hate Movies when LITW was brought up in this weeks episode. We even got a similar Giamatti impression.

I feel real sorry for Paul Giamatti. Everyone treats him like a huge dork when he actually seems pretty cool.

It's just fun to lampoon his penchant for playing sadsack characters. No one thinks he's like that, it's just funny because he plays a lot of Harvey Pekar-esque characters.

I'm glad that they were pretty cold on Con Air because I've never really gotten the love that movie gets. They're absolutely on-point about how the movie is too rapey and edgy to be breezy fun but too stupid and Bay-aping to be serious so it's mostly just uncomfortable and gross aside from a few standout moments.

Honestly I think he's had a great career considering it's spun from mostly TV spots and a recurring role on early TNG. Things ended up a bit differently, O'Brien would've been mentioned in the same breath as Chief Engineer Argyle or Assistant Chief Engineer Shimoba.

Not really, he was already an accomplished actor with several leading roles in the UK and Ireland before he got the gig on TNG. Funnily enough most of his big roles before he was Chief O'Brien, a kind work horse of a man, had him playing villains and bullies. He was also a secondary villain in Under Siege.

Columbine made a lot of movie theaters go pants-on-head crazy about underage people seeing R-rated movies, and they never really loosened up afterward.
