I just hope they do shorts. Didn't they kinda wane in the latter seasons? They don't have to worry too much about running time while on Netflix so I hope they have some in the new version.

The shorts kind of disappearing had more to do with Syfy than any desire on their behalf. Also I'm assuming shorts were harder to come by back in the day but now with the internet they're all over the place.

If they do shorts, I hope they dip into the deep well that is 80s anti-drug shorts. Granted, they're usually longer than the 10-minute shorts from the 50s that they usually used, but they'd definitely be a goldmine for the show.

I'd be happy with a 3 or 4 short episode but that's asking a lot. I know they've done 2 shorts and a movie. There's just something so ridiculous but earnest about a lot of shorts.

Yeah, the first SciFi channel season required that they only use things in the channel's library. Toward the end, however, the network lightened up their control and they could go back to the massive well of public domain shorts that brought us all so much joy. You'll note that A Case of Spring Fever was in the second to last episode of the show. I'd kind of like it if they expand the format to two hours. With little to no editing for the movie, a short, and host segments, they could run that length pretty easily. If a movie happens to only be 55 minutes long, then the episode only has to be an hour and ten. If the film is 150 minutes, then 3 hour ep. Though Joel's also said very few 50's type movies this go-round, so 70's-80's era PSAs are probably more likely if they do any shorts. Plus Rifftrax already has most of the good ones done anyway. They've got like 3 dozen Coronet ones alone.

As much as I love binge watching, I kinda like the idea of getting one a week to build the surprise of what will come next. I can see feeling the need or want to go straight into another "Orange..." or "House of Cards" or whatever. MST3k rarely ever had any cliffhangers or pressing need to go from one episode to another. I mean, later on they kinda did but it wasn't Breaking Bad levels of, "I need to now what's next!"

I'm pretty sure Joel said at some point that they wanted to release them one at a time, but that was before the Netflix deal was actually made and there have been about a million Kickstarter updates so I'll never be able to find it (if he even really said it).

Going back to the shorts, I'd be interested in seeing alternate takes on some of the Rifftrax ones, like the At Your Fingertips series or the Norman series. (Seriously I have no idea what the hell with the Norman Krasner shorts. I guess we made them in Canada, but I have no idea why. Although I very, very vaguely remember seeing one in either elementary or junior high once.)

I just (re-?)watched Project Moonbase. It's no better or worse than your average Season 1 episode, but one of those ones that seems worse because it's so mockable that you start counting the missed opportunities. Best moment is a riff that's almost too dumb for MST3K, but had me laughing like a moron anyway.

I think the new MST3k will stay away from movies that were already done. At least for the first season or two. What would work would be a classic reriffed for a Thanksgiving release or as an extra in some way but not in season. I think Joel would really want to get the new MST3k on a solid footing before going to something that has been done. And to be fair the new MST3k doesn't have to do that where as with Rifftrax it may have been a smart move to try to recapture old fans with previous riffs. I feel like that was a runonsentance. Glad i bothered to read the thread because I was wondering if they had plans to do any new shorts, and I guess the answer is "we don't know". Though all those 70s and 80s anti drug things would be perfect. I remember seeing one in Jr High that featured a kid going out to try to score some weed and ends up getting raped and murdered in a truck. WTF? Anyways, if anyone is curious on what kind of humor Elliott Kalan does, you can check out the Podcast he does, The Flophouse, and grab his Spider-Man and the X-men run.
