This last assault was supposed to win the war. At least, that was the plan. But on July 9th two weeks after the 5th Mechanized Infantry Division began it's attack heading South into central Poland the plan showed signs of being totally bunk. You would know, you were assigned to the divisions recon battalion (4th squadron of the 12th Cavalry, 500 men, mostly mounted on horseback.) and you've been at the tip of the spear for the entire push. The plan was to push through the city of Lodz, head North-East and possibly link up with NATO troops thought to be on the Baltic Coast. However due to major intelligence failures, no one expected the Soviets to already have entire divisions counter-attacking from the East. The 5th never made it to Lodz and over the course of several days the 5th Division was forced to retreat West to the city of Kalisz, with the 4-12 remaining at the back of the column to keep an eye on the rear as the division retreated.

This proved to be a smart move, as the 4-12 was able to alert command of the Soviet tank column closing in on Kalisz. 3-70 Armored took all 10 of their M1E2 tanks and the last of their fuel to confront the advancing tank column, to outstanding success. By the end of the day there were countless smoldering Soviet vehicles just outside of Kalisz. However friendly units to the North had reported that they had been crushed by advancing Polish tank columns, and they were heading straight towards Kalisz. Around the same time this news arrived Soviet infantry began probing the city from the South and more Soviet forces were coming from the East despite the 3-70s best efforts. The 4-12, now down to 200 men total, regrouped with the rest of the division in Kalisz.

On the evening of July 16th all of the units armor divisions were buzzing with activity, you watched as support units loaded M1 tanks with fuel and massive 120mm shells. They had orders to push South and crush any enemy troops encountered to clear an escape route for the entire division. In the morning hours of July 17th, 3 hours before dawn, the Soviet forces struck the city of Kalisz interrupting the operation. Most of the tanks had already left and began their push South, so only a few tanks remained to fend off the attacking Soviets. At 4AM the shelling began, massive shells zipped through the city and slammed into buildings indiscriminately, tearing them to shreds like they were made of paper. The tank commanders began shouting from the hatches of their tanks for everyone with a smoke grenade to use it. When it was clear that everyone was complying with the request, the tankers ducked back into their tanks and popped off the smoke grenade launchers on their M1s. The smoke was enough to blind the Soviet tanks, while the M1s were able to see through the smoke with their thermal sights and deliver accurate counter-fire.

This effective counter-measure provoked the Soviet forces into an all-out assault, putting major fire on the town, with all manner of tank and armored vehicle baring down on the city. Merely 10 minutes after this assault began, the 4-12 was down to fifty men, most of the unit dead or missing. Despite the 5th giving it to the Soviets as hard as they got it, the 5th was being overrun before your eyes.

Sgt. Cuithbeart "Drives" MacMharcais sits in the drivers seat of the Humvee, the window is down and his Sterling is in his hands, he's scanning for targets but doesn't see any.
Sgt. Ezekiel "Zeke" White is manning the .50 cal, he has exhausted his supply of ammunition for the weapon during the course of the battle but is still on the lookout for targets.
Private Tristan Morris is in the back, gripping his L1A1 tight and waiting for another assault to begin.
1st LT Bryce Leblanc sits in the front passenger seat, with his ear closely glued to the vehicles built in long range radio. It's a great effort to make anything out in all of the chaos, men are screaming enemy positions and requests for reinforcements so often it's impossible to hear anything. You begin to hear someone barking orders over the radio to "shut the hell up!" and surprisingly, people listen. It's the division commander, and he says "It's over! Good luck, you're all on your own!"

As if to punctuate this insanity, large caliber shells begin slamming into the ground, dangerously close to your vehicle. One after the other, each explosion shaking you to your core.

How do you proceed?

"Ah pretty much see poo poo," Sergeant White supplies helpfully. The .50 having been exhausted, he has unslung his battle rifle, using the larger weapon to brace his weight against as he scans the battlefield. If any sizable force shows up the M16A2 is going to be roughly as useful as spitting at them, but some weapon is better than no weapon, he reasons. "All them 'splosions're kickin' up dust, y'see."

What do the men of the 4-12 know about Sgt. White? He is generally amiable, an excellent shot, and dumb as a post. He has been known to have to ask for help reading things. On the other hand, he's been in combat for more than three loving years and he's not dead, so he's got to have something going for him. He is also entirely at ease out in the wilderness, an excellent hunter and fisherman, and pretty good with a horse, too. The general consensus is that the kid is probably just too dumb to die.

"Sir," this called down to the Lieutenant, "if'n anyone's out here lookin' f'r a ride we're not gonna be able t'give 'em one if we get blowed up. I'm just sayin'." Zeke's voice remains steady and even, as though all the explosions are just, you know, a thing that happens, nothing to be too concerned about.

We break out while the Soviets regroup - they're as badly supplied as we are. he said, letting the Sergeants take care of the details while he handled the planning. "If we circle back East, I can get us some supplies - maybe petrol. What I saw while scouting."

As the Lieutenant decides to direct the squad to engage, Zeke is already readying his M16; it would be nice to be able to use the .50 cal, but they're out of bullets for it... and Zeke isn't really a good shot with a machine gun anyways.

A moment, here, to digress. When you're growing up on a small family farm in the wilds of Appalachia, and your father is one of those people who doesn't want no gubmint handouts and so fails to take advantage of farm subsidies, sometimes money is tight; thus, your menfolk supplement your income with a bit of hunting. Nothing like fresh venison to keep a family fed, after all. But sometimes, when the weather doesn't behave and the bugs spoil some of your crop, sometimes money is really tight. Sometimes you don't have a ton of ammunition to go hunting with. And sometimes you're not the only animal out hunting. Nothing focuses the mind on the need for accuracy quite like finding yourself faced with a hungry mama grizzly when you've only got three rounds for your rifle.

All of which is by way of explaining how, despite the adrenaline rush that always floods through a body when the shooting starts, Zeke has never been one to waste ammunition. He has no need to flip the selector switch on his M16 to a single shot firing mode; his weapon is almost never off of a single shot firing mode. If he's feeling supremely confident he'll switch to a three-round burst, but even that feels wasteful to him. This, incidentally, is why he's not terribly comfortable with a machine gun; some part of him just hates the idea of wasting all those bullets. Bullets cost money!

At any rate, Drives is keeping the Humvee remarkably steady as they close the range, considering, so Zeke focuses on his breathing, takes what little aim he can considering the jostling of the vehicle, and fires on one of the two soldiers he's spotted.

I'm walking through my combat actions step-by-step in an attempt to illustrate the rules and also allow PinheadSlim to point out any areas in which I gently caress up, which is almost certain to happen.

So! Six actions. Originally I planned to do an Aim/Shoot combo, but alas, I'd forgotten you can't Aim from a moving vehicle. So what I'll do instead is hunker down as best I can behind the M60 and engage. That's one Action of essentially taking cover (not listed as an action in this rules list, but it sounds right to me) and five actions of Shooting.

The rolls:

CRM: 3#1d100 21 63 38
CRM: 2#1d100 25 99

(there's two sets of rolls because one was from my original 'Aim-Shoot-Aim-Shoot-Aim-Shoot' plan, which had to be discarded, but the rolls were made so there's no sense in chucking 'em)

Assuming we close to Medium Range after one action of driving, Zeke's target is CRM*0.3, or 24; that's two hits. The M16's ROF of 4 doesn't stuff me here, because that's how many shots I can take in a round, and I'm taking only 1 shot per round instead of going full-on rock n' roll, because bullets cost money. I'll save the Many Many Bullets option for when we're close enough to actually hit reliably! Note that if we're still at Long Range none of the shots hit, so the following can be ignored.

Two hits means two rolls on the Hit Location table, so:
Hit Location: 2#1d10 2 7
So, that's the Right Arm and the Right Leg. Dude may not have any armor on his extremities, which is nice!

Damage at Medium Range is 3*(weapon's base DAM), which is 2 for the M16, plus 3d6, so:
Damage: 2#3d6+6 17 17
17 points to each; if the guy's not a 98-pound weakling he's probably taken only Slight Injuries. Ah well, it's a start.

You've done a lot of things since the war began, but expertly running down a looter wasn't one of those things until just now. You expected to feel more of a bump when you ran over him, when you turned the vehicle around and got out to open fire you saw why. The looter was crushed into a muddy spot of soil, his twisted neck keeping his face pointing at a seemingly impossible angle.

The long years you've spent fighting the Soviet forces have kept your aim steady, you're so used to the weight of your issued service weapon that it feels like an extension of your arms. For most people it would be impossible to hit a target while they're in a vehicle that's speeding up and turning on a dime, but you're not most people and two of the five shots find their target, the looters body crumples in a heap as the shock sets in.

Your absolutely hard as rock poker face doesn't break, but your heart is racing and you're not sure what's going to happen when Sgt Drives hit the accelerator and pointed the vehicle at the looters. Your doubts were put to rest when your squad that you have expertly lead through-out this shitstorm of a campaign put two of the three looters out of action.

The last looter, the one who was giving orders with the submachine gun, is visibly shaken and throws his weapon down to the ground and dives for cover under the truck they were looting. He is shouting in Polish.

Before you managed to disable the two enemy soldiers, they manage to score 4 hits to the front of your vehicle. You however didn't notice any performance decrease during the firefight.

Truck ain't got much room f'r much else, an' I know I ain't wild 'bout trying t'take it out into the woods or nothin' where the Humvee can go."

After a moment, however, Zeke realizes that the problem of the truck and what to do with it is the Lieutenant's problem, not his - along with weightier issues like 'what are our actual orders' and 'are we ever going to see home again' and 'is civilization as we know it gone in a puff of atomic fire.' So he heads back over to the HMWWV and does something far more important - and for which he is better suited - than thinking, namely maintaining his freshly-fired M16. He doesn't have the time to really go at it with the cleaning kit, but he is fastidious with his rifle; if it jams, he's in for a bad day.

Incidentally, the name 'BETSY' has been scratched into the stock of Zeke's rifle; when he has been asked in the past, he has explained that he named the weapon after his baby sister, who used to regularly beat the poo poo out of him and his several brothers. When one soldier tried explaining to him that naming one's rifle was not really a thing that people did, he stared blankly and uncomprehendingly for a bit before ignoring the man.

For the record, the Colt he's carrying is named Lulu.

"Well someone give this guy his shittea mreees and lets get a move on!" Drives yells out the truck window. "LT, you want us to abandon the humveee or you wanna follow behind? I think we should try to keep it if at all possible, a good still is an expensive target, ya know."

Testing...testing. Is this thing still on?

"Good enough, Captain." he said, tossing the other MRE at the officer. "Beat it." he ordered, waving him away.

"Oh, and Captain?" he called out. "Take one more for the road." he said, throwing him another ration.

"Mount up." he ordered, "We're taking the truck until we can sell it or find more stragglers."

"Shame t'leave the fifty cal behind," Zeke notes, though he heads over to the truck as ordered. "Sure you don't want to take a few to get the cool stuff outta the Hummer at least?"

"Zut, I mean we take both for now. Drives and me lead in the Hummer, and you follow as best you can in the truck."
