For me Sonic CD is the most fun to route and replay. I only started playing it 2 months or so ago but I've beaten it with all good futures at least 15 times. It's the perfect length and it is really satisfying to learn the levels and smash through parts that slowed you down in previous runs.

The soundtracks (both of them) are pretty great... I dunno, is it me, am I crazy? Or is nostalgia just a really powerful drug in this case?

(Sonic 3 & Knuckles status: still owns, if it matters)

Just have fun running through it, don't go crazy trying to find the machine and get perfect until the second time.

Nothing in the game works the same as the barrel and just jumping on it gives you just enough of a reaction to fool you into thinking it works that way.

It is bad design.

I mean it can work that way easily I didn't know until I was an adult you could move it up and down. Just jumped to win

Well, I certainly have no nostalgia for it, and I love it. It's a bit atypical though, so it's no guarantee you'll like if if you like the genesis games.

Aside from that dumb barrel S3&K is the best Sonic game. Great level design, looks fantastic, great soundtrack, fun mechanics (barrel aside).

Sonic Rush for DS isn't talked about much but it's a lot of fun. Also has good music and so long as you aren't butthurt over the introduction of a boost mechanic the gameplay is good. Game is fuckin fast.

It's worth noting that if you get all the time stones in the special stages, you'll automatically get a Good Future in all zones and acts and thus the Good Ending. So don't stress yourself out trying to find the machines in the past, it's just an alternative to getting the good ending compared to the special stages.

Sonic Battle was atrocious. I remember attempting to play it and getting stuck on trying to fight Knuckles in the story because I got shitall for good moves for Emerl and kept getting dunked.

Don't the time stones only affect levels after you get all of them? I thought you still had to get the machines in the first 7 non-boss acts (assuming you do all the special stages on your first try and get one after every level).

Well, yes but it doesn't matter. As soon as you get the last time stone, you're locked in to the good ending because the implication is that Sonic used them to prevent Eggman from ever doing anything in those zones in the first place. Getting all of the time stones and getting all of the machines is redundant unless you really like to explore levels.

Getting all the Time Stones auto-destroys all the machines in the past, much to my horror during my "destroy all machines" run. Still went out of my way to find them though because exploring the levels is fun. :kiddo:

Sonic 2 has the worst special stages and the quality of levels starts to fall off around Casino Night Zone and careens into a flaming freefall around Oil Ocean Zone.
