Heeeeeey

It's really more "the stakes are so high we have to send our most experienced men" than anything else.

At least this game doesn't use fill vacancy promotions like the original X-Com (UFO Defense), which was always hilarious when you send a bunch of rookies out on a mission and all of a sudden one of them is the Commander.

Apparently, in the late game, strike teams consist almost entirely of senior-level officers. I know it's video-game logic, but the notion makes me chuckle. Maybe XCOM is a real stickler for the "lead from the front" school of thought? Then again, it's commanded by a telepathic, supernaturally-aware micro-manager for whom time itself stops while he or she ponders their next move, so I guess the officers don't really have anything better to do.

It's mostly just a legacy thing from the original X-com.

Of course, in the original, usually the best thing to do was have the CO sit at the back of the skyranger and look inspirational to keep the rookies from panicking, since if they got shot, everyone would poo poo themselves. Officers were pretty much just a panic control mechanic.

Which is kind of awkward since the order in the skyranger is set by recruit order, so it's quite likely the person at the front will get the first promotion. Which leads to them getting the second, and then before you know it, one shot off the ramp and you've got a panic spiral.

Why would they need a Hitler dreadnought when the entire theme of WH40K is genocide the other? WH40K - Genocide is a feature, not a side effect.

I really want to say yes to this, but my last two LPs have taught me that as much additional poo poo as I want to do and plan to do at the start of an LP, I am very likely burned out by the end of things and a lot of the extra ideas I have get dropped. So it may just depend on how quickly I finish the main LP and see how I feel about adding on to it. I do kind of regret not doing a training roulette for the first XCom

You know, there are some things and skills that I may not have given a full trial or thought over as much as I thought I had. As Guava talked more about Overdrive the more I wanted to work it out more and use it and see if I could really justify Adaptive Aim at any point. No real spoiler to say I am taking the SPARK on the next two missions I have recorded and I did my best to try to use Overdrive more liberally than I have in the past. I can say it worked out well, but Adaptive Aim still sucks balls I have to conclude.

Someone else posted that perhaps the most common use of Overdrive is Move->Rocket->Shoot and for whatever dumb reason I never considered this previously. And when you rocket something with the Spark it is probably a situation that warrants using a cooldown skill like Overdrive. So I think I did that exact maneuver in both missions, and it's pretty great. The other times I got use out of Overdrive was treating it more like run and gun, so Move->Move->Shoot. Neither of these situations would have benefited from Adaptive Aim. So I'm going to give partial credit to Guava here and say I probably could make more use out of Overdrive than I have previously, but then he still gets a big F for Adaptive Aim because it doesn't actually help when I overdrive.

Eh, in one of my playthroughs I made a full 6 SPARKS and just sent them on missions, replacing one with a specialist (Whom I dubbed "robo-lord") if it seemed like a good idea (so when I need to carry a vip or hack something), and there, I found adaptive aim much more useful than bulwark, as it turned "overdrive, shoot thrice, repeat until enemies are dead" a valid tactic. That's a gimmick though, but it did work amazingly. I will say I much prefer rainmaker over punch though, simply because 3 width plasma blasters are hilarious. As are blaster bombs with enhanced radius and damage.

I can have moments of... eccentricity and sometimes be quite curious about things. Please forgive me if I do something foolish or rude.

Overdrive into Shoot> Shoot> Shoot or Move> Shoot> Shoot is useful when something absolutely, positively has to die this turn - like a pod activation into flank when half your guys have already moved, or a chryssalid sprinting out of fog to say hi to your Ranger, or a Lancer anywere near a freshly-wounded troop. It's situational, but having a Spark that can reliably land those hits on an enemy - especially for armored enemies considering the innate Shred - is an incredibly useful tool to have in a pinch.

Not that having the ability to throw full cover anywhere isn't useful - especially in terrain where grenades have destroyed every bit of cover - but it feels more situational to me - it's not generally that difficult to find full cover, apart from the aforementioned no-man's-land scenario; having Bulwark apply to adjacent enemies is kind of ridiculous; and lastly, you can use WAR armor to do heavy cover for a turn on a cooldown anyway. Same effect, only it's attached to an armour instead of burning a perk.

Mind you, I'd still give my eyeteeth for a perk that adds more uses to the heavy / powered weapons on a Spark.

I too was drawn by the "shoot more when overdriving" ability at first, but then I realized that, like Jade said, I rarely used more than one shot when overdriving. So I had a skill that gave me a better aim roll when I used it once every 15 or so turns when the majority of the missions have a turn counter, at least initially. Meanwhile I could guarantee better aim and crit chances already by using overdrive to move-rocket-shoot, or move-move-"shove autocannon barrel's down flanked sectoid's throat", and the extra armor comes in handy every time the Spark takes a damage roll, which it has the chance to do several times in one turn since it can't take cover and only has its innate 15 defense.

There's a mod for that. Gives Enemy-Within style projects to the Proving Ground to upgrade your Sparks. Gives them everything from +10 aim, 5 ablative shields at the start of a mission on top of their health, to extra heavy weapon uses to Close Combat Protocol (remember Close Combat Specialist in EW with your Assault making a free overwatch on every dude that entered 4 tiles? Now your Sparks get that.)

That would combo quite nicely with Bastion! Free shots on giys trying to melee or flank your covered units, plus a free point-blank shot on an enemy trying to use the Spark as cover.

Would have to check her Character Sheet, she may have Field Medic but it is broken and does not work with Medical Protocol so pointless if she does.

I have no idea what you're talking about, since Field Medic's effect is obvious and it does work with Medical Protocol (provided you actually equip a Medkit).

Shen has 5 Medical Protocol charges in the video (after being given a Medkit), which means she does have Field Medic (1 + 2 for having a Medkit at all + 2 for Field Medic).

I'm surprised they didn't add her as a cheat character. They could probably code her to not unlock until you've finished the tower mission so you don't do something dumb like have the mission-critical Shen and the cheaty Shen at the same time.
