John Saunders was one of the good ones :(
At least he died before ESPN cut him due to budget cuts.

Went out on his own terms.

Tap "A" to drink!!!

Unrelated to the terrible news but to just throw my two cents in: there is no ESPN original programming worth watching. Watch for live sports if you must but all the studio shows and personalities are terrible. I can't remember the last time I even turned ESPN on for a non sporting event. Probably years ago.

Also to touch on Bill Simmons chat: launching a weekly sports talk show in the middle of the summer is not a great idea. Baseball is the only active sport and nobody is watching a weekly baseball show. Should have launched during football season because football anything seems to do well - including over analysis of training camp and practice.

How about Outside the Lines and 30 for 30 documentaries? They are original programming are pretty good.

I haven't watched since I was in high school but PTI was really really good when it started. Tony and Wilbon always had dumb old man opinions but the chemistry between them was great, the format was really smart (which is why every show like that rips it off now), and it was generally really fun. I imagine it hasn't aged that well now that there are a million clones but it felt genuinely fresh for the first two years.

Kornheiser at least brought a degree of self-awareness that none of the other shows had or have

It's still pretty drat good because of the chemistry of Tony and Wilbon. Tony is still the same awesome old man. Wilbon is just ok now, kind of gotten a bit older and kind of full of himself... but still better than 95% of sportsball people on tv. PTI also selects pretty good substitutes (they used to select Whitlock ffs) since both of the guys take at least one day off a week.

My sole source of NFL news and views were his Monday Radio shows with the recap with the guy from the NFL network (Maske?) and then the Jaws prediction show on thursday.

I'm sad that I can't do that again this season. :(

I just got a hell of an email from the local TV station I do play-by-play for

"Good Afternoon,

If you use twitter already please send me your twitter handle so the [channel] account can follow you (if you haven’t already). For those of you who do not use twitter please consider it as we are moving to have a big social media presence. The [channel] account will monitor your posts about games/fans/schools/stories and they will retweet and share the best of those. If you need help setting one up or have any questions please let me know. Also, make sure you are following the twitter, Facebook page, and Instagram. Thanks!"

#2: Do they realize how goddamn awful an idea to connect peoples' personal twitter accounts to the channel?

So the NFL is forcing almost 72-year old Al Michaels to call NBC's Thursday Night games instead of MIke Tirico

Apparently part of the pitch was the networks involved would send their top teams to call the games (never mind that CBS is involved and that actively makes me not want to watch games).

Either way, if so I can kind of understand. But I'd rather have Al Michaels happy so he sticks around as long as possible.

Is Al also doing SNF? I remember him saying that doing SNF and TNF on the same week is always bad because between the travel and double preparation you always end up with two bad broadcasts.

Yeah, usually he has all of SNF plus opening night/Thanksgiving night. Now he's forced to do 5 more games. Look at how Nantz/Simms really deteriorated from the extra games
