POKEMON ULTRA SUN AND ULTRA MOON ARE OUT, CHECK THE NEXT POST FOR ALL THE LATEST INFO

It's past November 16th 2018, so Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee are the Yellow remakes you wanted, but probably didn't expect to be saddled with Pokemon Go mechanics and only Kanto Pokemon. There's really not much to talk about, your starters are overpowered monsters with crazy coverage, you can ride various Pokemon, and there's no wild battles. Oh yeah, and I guess you'll need Pokemon GO to get Meltan and Melmetal, but yeah, it's Kanto. Again. Again. Again. Again.

Oh yeah, the actual games you're looking for, the Gen 8 titles, will be releasing in the second half of 2019, so you're stuck in this thread for another year!

For the latest Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon info, please check the next post as this is a more general introduction to the Pokemon franchise. I'm also keeping this OP relatively bare compared to previous, as people usually ask in the thread anyway. Refer to the previous thread's OP if you have some burning questions, it'll answer most of the Gen 6 ones.

Discord to discord things in.

Hammerite posted:

Pokémon is a JRPG for the Nintendo 3DS. Unlike most RPGs though, in Pokémon your party members are cute (and sometimes not-so-cute) monsters that you caught, tamed, and trained to battle. Each Pokémon can learn a variety of skills (called moves) and has a special ability (a special rule or power which allows it to bend or break the normal rules of the game in some way). Different Pokémon species also have different strengths and weaknesses (some are physically stronger than others, for example, and some are faster or bulkier) and different elemental types (sending out a Fire-type Pokémon against a Water-type opponent is typically a no-no, for reasons anybody can probably understand).

The objective of the game is to travel from town to town, defeating other trainers in battle, collecting a variety of Pokémon and earning Gym Badges before eventually defeating the best trainers in the land: the Elite Four and the Champion. But once you've done that, there's so much more you can do! Pokémon is nothing if not social, and this has become only more true over time as players have gained more ways to connect to one another, world-wide. You can trade with other players and try to put together a complete collection of Pokémon (sure to take you a while, given that there are more than 700 in existence, many of them with multiple different forms to keep track of). Or you can try to be the very best, like no-one ever was, and destroy all-comers in PvP battles. Or you can just potter around watering berries in your garden. Or you can hang out, chat, and make and/or share artwork. There are many facets to Pokémon, and each of them has its devotees.

:siren: Help I haven't played Pokemon for a million, billion years and there's apparently 800 of these drat things what game do I play first?????? :siren:

Be sure to pick up Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon for the best introduction into the series, as well as the version millions of people are playing right now! Otherwise, pick up either X or Y and dive right in. If you liked what you saw, then pick up Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire and then continue to Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon. Or not. Pick whatever game you really fancy as Pokemon is a very easy series to start with, or get back into. Just know that each generation of Pokemon plays differently, with the basic mechanics being the same across the entire franchise, so it makes each game unique in their own way and more fun to play.

What Pokemon do I catch? Is my starter any good? Do I need to worry about IVs or EVs or whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

The single player story of any Pokemon game isn't going to be very difficult. You could beat the entire game just using your starter, but it is a lot of fun to field a full team of six of the coolest creatures you find. Very few Pokemon are completely unusable in the main game (they're usually gimmicks and/or have low stats), so if you like the look of something, use it! If it doesn't work out, use something else, but try not to make a habit of that, as you'll fall behind the low level curve if you keep rotating things out.

If you want to go into competitive, then Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's metagame is definitely a bit more varied than ORAS's. It requires a fair amount of research to keep on top of everything, so it's a real investment. But it's a lot of fun and it's really surprising how deep the battle system is. If that doesn't float your boat, then feel free to explore the region, catch all the Pokemon and try out new features. Battling is only scratching the surface of all the many, many, MANY things you can do in the series and it's up to you to find your niche.

Man these games are way too easy, not like back in my day!

While there are some difficulty spikes, usually in the form of boss battles, or rare random trainers, Pokemon is overall a very easy series that allows you to create your own difficulty. Are you sweeping the Ice Gym with your level 50 Mega Blaziken? Well, maybe that's why you're having an easy time. Later games give you many more options in both attacking moves and Pokemon availability, so you will be stronger overall than you might be in Gen 2, for example, where a lot of Pokemon had only moves of their own type and Normal moves. How times have changed.

If you're playing Gen 6 or 7, then turning off the Exp. Share might be an option, or you could leave it on and constantly rotate team members. There's a lot of freedom in how to construct your team and the Pokemon you can use, so if you're complaining that the games are too easy, then do something about it! Or maybe single player Pokemon just isn't for you and you would do better with stupidly hard/edgy romhacks, or going into the competitive side.

What were the most recent introductions to the series? (Gen 6)

The big newest addition is the Fairy type, bringing the number up to 18. As such, a number of old Pokemon and moves changed typing to give Fairy some variety and to shake up the competitive scene. Overall, it's pretty strong, but a cool addition to a fairly stale type chart. Steel also lost its Ghost and Dark resistances, making them arguably the best two offensive types right now.

The second biggest addition was Mega Evolution. Certain Pokemon can transform mid-battle to boost their stats, change typing and ability and give you a big advantage in battle. Currently, there are 48 Mega Evolutions from 46 Pokemon.

Everything's in 3D! Battles can be viewed in 3D, but the models for the Pokemon are future proofed, so they're a bit of a strain on the 3DS. The overworld cannot be viewed in 3D, but you no longer have grid based movement (completely).

Pokemon Amie lets you interact with your Pokemon on the touch screen and give them cakes and belly rubs and ahhhhhh it's so cute. Super Training, meanwhile, lets your train your Pokemon's EVs to make them stronger in battle with balloon minigames. The Player Search System lets you trade, battle and connect with players all over the world via wireless. All of this can be accessed from the touch screen, but only Pokemon Amie continues into Gen 7, because gently caress you.

Customization lets you change your outfit in certain Boutiques in Kalos city's Pokemon Centers, to really make your character unique. You can even change your hair style, hair colour, skin colour, eye colour and create wonderfully dumb PR videos in certain places in Lumiose City. This feature is not in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, but it is in Gen 7.

For Gen 7 introductions, please check the next post which goes over each of the new features.

How do I get my Pokemon from generation to generation?

Transfer chart by Aristide

While there's no way to get Pokemon between Gen 2 and Gen 3 due to incompatible data structures, you are free to trade Gen 1 Pokemon between Gen 1 and 2 no problem using the Time Capsule, so long as they don't have any Gen 2 exclusive moves. You can move Pokemon from Gen 3 all the way up to Gen 7 using different transfer methods, but it must be done one generation at a time.

Gen 3 to Gen 4 requires a DS with a GBA slot. Simply insert your Gen 3 game into the slot and use the Pal Park in a Gen 4's postgame to transfer them up, six at a time, once per day (or unlimited times a day if using HeartGold and SoulSilver). It is a one way transfer, like with the rest of the methods and requires you to go around and catch your new Pokemon in a large natural area.

Going from Gen 4 to Gen 5 requires two DS systems (3DS is fine also) and uses the DS Download Play. Again, you can transfer six Pokemon at once using a bow and arrow minigame with a time limit. It kinda sucks. You can also use the Relocator to transfer up special event Pokemon from Gen 4 to unlock special events in Black and White, such as the shiny Legendary Beasts and Celebi, though there's no way to obtain these now, especially the Lock Capsule to obtain TM95 Snarl, as that was never released.

Gen 5 to Gen 6 is the easiest method, but requires Pokemon Bank, an online storage system that's around $5 a year and lets you store 3000 Pokemon in ~the cloud~, as well as the Poke Transporter, both of which can be found in the Eshop. You can transfer the entirety of Box 1 of your Gen 5 game into Pokemon Bank to then use in your Gen 6 game.

On January 25th 2017, Pokemon Bank was updated for Gen 7 compatibility, allowing you to not only bring Pokemon from Gen 6 forward (thought without items), you can also transfer Pokemon from VC Gen 1, though glitch Mews and Missingno. are not allowed. Backwards compatibility is not possible, though you can still keep a living dex for both generations, you just can't take any new Pokemon out into older games. Pokemon transferred from Gen 1 will have at least 3 max IVs, their HA and a small Gameboy symbol.

On November 20th 2017, Bank was updated again to allow transfer of Pokemon from VC Gold and Silver (and later Crystal), allowing every generation of Pokemon to finally link up to Gen 7. Like with Gen 1, those transferred will have at least 3 max IVs, their HA and a small Gameboy symbol. You can even transfer a shiny Celebi from VC Crystal, now that the GS Ball event is finally available to those outside of Japan. Happy days.

Are the anime/manga/side games any good?

Give them a go and see how you like them. The XY anime has ended and was pretty fantastic, if having a bit of a slow start, while the Pokemon Special manga has many different arcs to read and different protagonists to follow, making it pretty excellent overall. There's a million other manga, but it's up to if you want to indulge in the more obscure aspects of the franchise. The Pokemon Origins anime is also a good watch, as is the four Mega Evolution anime specials.

The Sun and Moon anime has been on for over a year and has a more group adventurist vibe compared to previous seasons, as well as accelerated game story! It's a cute and bright show with cute creatures and cute people, so uh, if you like that stuff, it's fun. As always with the anime, don't expect anything all that impressive or crazy out there.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is the best of the side series, so jump in with the most recent one, Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. The Pokemon Ranger series are also quite good, as is the Pokemon Colosseum series for the Gamecube. There's also Pokemon Conquest if you like your strategy Samurai Warriors. The various Free to Play games range from mediocre to terrible, so if you want to try out Shuffle, Picross or GO, then feel free to. But don't expect anything amazing. Pokemon GO does have its own thread.

Which is the best Pokemon?

The one you like the most. It is also someone else's worst Pokemon. There are no winners when it comes to Pokemon opinions.

This OP is terrible and I don't know what any of this poo poo means!

That's the idea, best to dive right into the thread discussion and have a good time! Our resident Pokemon Masters will happily answer your questions and queries on any aspect of this 20 year old franchise. Talk about the anime, push your opinions while dismissing others, argue about which is the worst Pokemon and how the new designs are totally NOT Pokemon. Best to keep all this poo poo contained here then to spread it to the rest of the forum. You loving nerds!!!

Sun and Moon content is just below the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon content!

Here's the QR code for Magearna if you don't have it yet. Here's the QR code for the I Choose You Cap Pikachu, only usable for USUM.

Trying to get a legendary with a specific nature with Synchronize? Read this first!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YQkVWhSNCU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cPFX4kQXaQ

For the first time in over a decade, we have third versions to fix the broken unfinished mess that was Sun and Moon... lol jk, it's 75% the same game. Unlike most third versions though, this is split into two, because of two reasons: more money for us; gently caress you. However, these third versions seem to have quite a bit more content to them, featuring an enhanced story (well, ending), new formes, new areas and for the first time in the series, NEW POKEMON. If you're not too impressed about what you've seen so far, you might have to get them anyway just for the complete Pokedex. These games released worldwide November 17th, grab them now!

Actually, should you pick these games up? If you played Sun and Moon when they came out then... ehhhhh? You will be playing that game for the most part until the plot starts ramping up. There are a couple differences here and there, but if you weren't impressed last time, honestly you won't be impressed this time around. If it will be your first Gen 7 game, then absolutely pick it up, these games are amazing! And if you need to be up to date with all the Pokemon, forms and competitive scene then of course you're picking this up, now hand over the money!

Starters!
Still choose between the Grass/Flying owl Rowlet, the Fire cat Litten, or the Water performer Popplio! There is no right or wrong choice, so go with your heart.

:siren: NEW POKEMON :siren:
The big change these new games have are introducing, currently, 4 new Pokemon inbetween a generation. We have #803 Rock/Steel UB Stakataka, #804 Fire/Ghost UB Blacephalon, #805 Poison UB Poipole, #806 Poison/Dragon UB Naganadel and #807 Electric secret M21 star Zeraora. That's your lot.

New formes!
Like with Black 2 and White 2, the third legendary of the box art trio gets some new formes to hopefully not be quite so bad in comparison to the other two. Necrozma (forcefully) fuses with Solgaleo or Lunala to become the Psychic/Steel Dusk Mane Necrozma with Prism Armor in Ultra Sun and the Psychic/Ghost Dawn Wings Necrozma with Prism Armor in Ultra Moon. Remember, these are new formes of Necrozma.

We also have a new Lycanroc forme. Download a special event Rockruff shortly after the game's release and evolve it between 5pm and 5.59pm at or after level 25 to obtain Dusk Lycanroc. It's slightly less poo poo than the other two. It has Tough Claws as an ability and both Accelrock and Counter. All three Lycanroc will be able to use the unique Z-move Splintered Stormshards if they know Stone Edge.

Finally, we also have the I Choose You Cap Pikachu exclusive to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Unlike the one choice you get of the other six Cap Pikachu, you can obtain this in the new games through a QR code by going to see the 20th movie in Japan, or just scanning in the QR code earlier. Like the other Capchu's, it'll be able to use the unique Z-move 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt if it knows Thunderbolt (funny that).

New areas!
Alola has changed somewhat in this alternate universe and the region has changed in a few subtle ways. New beaches have formed, some buildings have been created and you are now able to surf between the islands using the new Mantine Surf Pokeride. That's about all the new areas though, nothing too crazy has changed aside from a few water levels here and there.

Move Tutors!
The feature that (hopefully) makes Pokemon less poo poo will return. Gain points from Mantine Surf to spend on moves that these Pokemon should've had in the first place and won't be available for another 10 years!

Squad Squad Squad
The Ultra Recon Squad has four pale-skinned members that will have more focus depending on the version, with Dulse and Zossie in Ultra Sun and Soliera and Phyco in Ultra Moon. They will appear throughout the story and are trying to track Necrozma to prevent it from stealing Alola's light. They have with them UB Adhesive and battle you midway through the story.

Ultra Space!
Unlike Sun and Moon where you went to Ultra Space once in the story's climax to walk down a corridor, you can now travel through Ultra Space on the back of your game's legendary in a minigame. Now you can visit the Ultra Spaces of all the Ultra Beasts as well as other random Pokemon, including old legendaries! As well as visit...

Ultra Megaopolis!
A city in Ultra Space where Necrozma has stolen all the light and hoards it in a large shining tower. At the top of the tower is Necrozma itself. This is where the Ultra Recon Squad make their base and appear to be the only inhabitants.

Team Rainbow Rocket!
If you thought things couldn't get any crazier, then here comes Giovanni with a new Team Rocket taking over Festival Plaza with Mega Mewtwo X/Y in the postgame!!! And that's not all...

Archie, Maxie, Cyrus, Ghetsis and Lysandre!
All the villains from past games have teamed up through the Ultra Wormholes and seem to be victors in their parallel worlds. It's up to you to stop them before they take over this world as well.

Battle Agency!
A new stall in the Festival Plaza allows you to rent a team of 3 Pokemon to battle against other strong trainers and gain rare items like Gold Bottle Caps. The amount of cool and powerful Pokemon you can rent depends on your Festival Plaza rank. Your rank also determines Pokemon level, so when you're stuck with lovely Level 50 AIs because no one uses this facility online, you'll be hosed.

Revamped Pokedex!
Instead of 302 Pokemon in Sun and Moon's Pokedex, now 402 Pokemon can be found in the New Alola Pokedex, including quite a few Pokemon that you didn't see before, like Zorua, Larvesta, Larvitar, Tropius and more! Houndoom and Manectric are also version exclusives, being Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, respectively.

Rotom's Z-Power!
No, the Rotom Dex is still not a battleable Pokemon, but if you interact with it a lot and it grows to like you, you can use its power in battle to let you use 2 Z-moves in battle! Note that you can't use the same Z-move twice, but it allows you to use two different Z-moves on 2 different Pokemon.

Roto Loto!
Also by interacting with the Rotom Dex you can get items from it that you can use like Gen 6's O-Powers, such as hatching eggs faster, or gaining more experience in battle.

Every single goddamn legendary ever!
If you thought ORAS crammed in the legendaries using Hoopa's rings, well, Ultra Wormholes do the same thing, letting you visit different locations around the Pokemon Multiverse to obtain basically every standard legendary you can think of. There are plenty of version exclusives and the various Mythical Pokemon can't be found (so Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect, Diancie, Hoopa, Volcanion, Magearna and Marshadow), but everything is fair game! Third version Pokemon require their other two version exclusive legendaries to appear (so Giratina requires Dialga and Palkia, etc)

Version exlusives!
Since there's 2 games in this third version, there's even more version exclusives. This isn't the whole list of course, but Sun and Moon's list should be a good reference.

:siren: ULTRA SUN EXCLUSIVE :siren:

Solgaleo, Dusk Mane Necrozma, Alolan Vulpix, Alolan Ninetales, Turtonator, Cranidos, Rampardos, Tirtouga, Carracosta (fossils can be traded to the other version and revived), Rufflet, Braviary, Passimian, Houndour, Houndoom, Cottonee, Whimsicott, UB Burst, UB02 Buzzwole, UB04 Kartana, event Rockruff comes with Fire Fang, Dulse and Zossie are given more focus.

Through Ultra Wormholes: Raikou, Ho-oh, Latios, Groudon, Dialga, Heatran, Tornadus, Reshiram, Xerneas.

:siren: ULTRA MOON EXCLUSIVE :siren:

Lunala, Dawn Wings Necrozma, Alolan Sandshrew, Alolan Sandslash, Drampa, Shieldon, Bastiodon, Archen, Archeops (fossils can be traded to the other version and revived), Vullaby, Mandibuzz, Oranguru, Electrike, Manectric, Petilil, Lilligant, UB Assembly, UB02 Pheromosa, UB04 Celesteela, event Rockruff comes with Thunder Fang, Soliera and Phyco are given more focus.

Through Ultra Wormholes: Entei, Lugia, Latias, Kyogre, Palkia, Regigigas, Thundurus, Zekrom, Yveltal.

New Z-moves!
Using the new black Z-Power Ring, you're able to use even more Z-moves! Kommo-o now has the unique Z-move of Clangorous Soulblaze, the first multi-target Z-move that also boosts all of Kommo-o's stats by +2, if it knows Clanging Scales. There is also Lycanroc's new Z-move, Spilntered Stormshards, which does damage and also removes terrain, if it knows Stone Edge.

Both Solgaleo and Dusk Mane Necrozma get the new Z-move Searing Sunraze Smash, which ignores the opponent's ability, if they know Sunsteel Strike. Lunala and Dawn Wings Necrozma get Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom, which ignores the opponent's ability, if they know Moongeist Beam. Necrozma also has the new move Photon Geyser, which uses either the Attack or Special Attack stat, whichever is higher.

Mimikyu has the new Z-move Let's Snuggle Forever, if it knows Play Rough. It has no secondary effect.

Ultra Burst?
There's more to Necrozma than you think. While in Dusk Mane or Dawn Wings form, Necrozma can use Ultra Burst in a similar way of Mega Evolution to become Ultra Necrozma, which has really big stats and can then use its unique Z-move, Light That Burns The Sky.

New trail!
Now that Game Freak aren't rushed for time, they can actually put the stuff they were going to put into Sun and Moon anyway, so Mina now has the new Fairy trial, bringing the total to 8. There will also be some small differences to the old trials, such as Sophacles having a new robotic Vikavolt and Araquanid and Alolan Marowak being the new Totem Pokemon. Uh, that's it, they didn't have loads of time, obviously.

Alola Photo Club!
Remember those empty spaces in some cities? Well now that Game Freak aren't rushed for time, they can actually put the stuff they were going to put into Sun and Moon anyway, so some of those building contain a new place where you can take pictures with your Pokemon. Unlike HGSS, you can edit them, have different poses, backgrounds, stickers, the works. For some special Pokemon you can even take a picture right when you catch them instead of going to a club. Like with the PR videos in XY and the PokeFinder in SM, it's a feature that no one will really talk about!

Totem Stickers!
Around Alola on buildings and various surfaces you'll find some neat stickers that, when you have enough of, allow you to use Totem Pokemon in battle. The Totem you'll receive is based on the amount and most are version exclusive, such as Totem Lurantis in Ultra Sun and Totem Salazzle in Ultra Moon.

They seem to be real enhanced versions of Sun and Moon and seem to make those games kinda pointless to play. Still, that's what third versions are all about. Still, if you played Sun and Moon already... third versions are still the soulless lovely cashgrabs they've been since Pocket Monsters Blue. Still, it'll have the most changes out of all of them... not that that means much, nor is it a sequel, so it's really a part of the Pokemon franchise that seriously needs to die already.

:siren: SUN AND MOON INFO STARTS HERE :siren:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ak-kiDmw_5g

The seventh generation is here! First announced on Pokemon's 20th anniversary, Pokemon Sun and Moon have been released everywhere, so rejoice, this cool rear end Pokemon game can be yours either on the e-Shop, or from a non-lovely game store near you. Taking place on the Hawaii inspired Alola, the new region is a tropical paradise, featuring plenty of brand new Pokemon on its four natural islands, including Pokemon we've seen before, but with new and exciting Alolan Formes that change their typing and even stats! As with every new game release, there is no better time to be a Pokemon fan.

If you want to keep up with all the brand new Pokemon introduced, then there's a very handy list here, including typing, new moves and general info released on the official Pokemon site. New Alolan Formes of old Pokemon can be found here.

Demo version available October 18th!
Bring along your special partner Ash-Greninja! Use the new ability Battle Bond to transform after beating a Pokemon. Complete the demo to bring special Pokemon and items to the main game to give you that early boost!

:siren: What the flip is new??? :siren:

82 new Pokemon!
That's all of them in the game. But not in this generation, woah!

Starters!
Choose between the Grass/Flying owl Rowlet, the Fire cat Litten, or the Water performer Popplio! There is no right or wrong choice, so go with your heart.

Starter evolutions!
Surprisingly enough, your first companions can evolve. Rowlet evolves into the Grass/Flying Dartrix, Litten evolves into the pure Fire Torracat and Popplio evolves into the pure Water Brionne. Does this confirm the starter leak or no? The answer is yeah, gently caress off.

Starter evolutions! Again!
For the first time since Gen 1, we actually have the final starter evolutions revealed before the games come out! Dartrix becomes the Grass/Ghost Decidueye, Torracat becomes the Fire/Dark Incineroar and Brionne becomes the Water/Fairy Primarina. Now your incorrect choice of starter has become cemented! (The correct answer is all of them, maybe even at the same time)

Unique starter Z-Moves!
Your starters are able to destroy the opponent with their own unique Z-Moves, with Decidueye having Sinister Arrow Raid, Incineroar having Malicious Moonsault and Primarina having Oceanic Operetta.

Version exclusives!
Like with every Pokemon game, you can only find certain Pokemon in certain versions. Use this to determine how bad your taste is by not picking up both games anyway!

:siren: SUN EXCLUSIVE :siren:

Solgaleo, Alolan Vulpix, Alolan Ninetales, Cranidos, Rampardos, Tirtouga, Carracosta (fossils can be traded over and revived in the other version), Cottonee, Whimsicott, Rufflet, Braviary, Turtonator, Passimian, UB02 Buzzwole, UB04 Kartana. Lycanroc (Moon) can be caught postgame, not making them version exclusive.

:siren: MOON EXCLUSIVE :siren:

Lunala, Alolan Sandshrew, Alolan Sandslash, Shieldon, Bastiodon, Archen, Archeops, (fossils can be traded over and revived in the other version), Petilil, Lilligant, Vullaby, Mandibuzz, Drampa, Oranguru, UB02 Pheromosa, UB04 Celesteela, Lycanroc (Sun) can be caught postgame, not making them version exclusive.

The Alola Region!
A brand new region of four natural islands featuring many new and old Pokemon alike. Each island has their own guardian protector Pokemon as well as a Kahuna and regional Pokedex!

Z-Moves!
Incredibly powerful moves that can be used once a battle. There's one for each type, but to use it, you need to utilize Z Crystals of that type and give to a Pokemon that knows a move of that type! Fancy using a move called Bloom Doom? Then this is for you! Working off of the move selected, it can have a maximum power while being either physical or special. Z-Status moves are also a thing and do different effects depending on the base move, before using the move itself. Z-Splash boosts your Attack by 3 stages, Z-Belly Drum heals you to full before cutting your HP. Try them out and see how it goes!

Certain Pokemon have their own specialized Z-Moves, such as Alolan Raichu, Pikachu, Eevee, the Tapus, Snorlax, Mew, Marshadow and Cap Pikachu with their own specific Z-Crystal, which also requires a specific move to use.

Cap Pikachu!
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the anime, you can get a special Pikachu with a cap that Ash wore during that series. Yes, he's still ten. Each Cap Pikachu can only be obtained in one save file. They have different moves and are at a different level depending on the series and can perform the unique Z-move 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt if they know, well, Thunderbolt. Uh, that's all there is to them.

The Island Challenge!
Instead of going around and taking on eight Gyms to obtain badges, now you must take on a number of Island Challenges set by the Trial Captains, which will involve defeating a Totem Pokemon with boosted stats and the ability to call in lackeys. Completing all the trials on an island allows you to face against the Island Kahuna in battle. Defeat them to clear the trials and move on to the next island!

On the first island, we have Ilima, captain of the Normal trail and Hala, the Fighting Kahuna. On the second island, we have Lana, the Water captain, Mallow the Grass Captin, Kiawe the Fire captain and Olivia, the Rock Kahuna. On the third island, we have Sophacles, the Electric captain, Acerola the Ghost captain and Nanu the Dark Kahuna. On the final island, we have Hapu, the Ground Kahuna and Mina the Fairy captain. After all the trials, it's time to take on...

The Elite Four and Champion!
To cement Alola in the world stage, they're constructing a Pokemon League and you're the first contender. You're up against Hala, Olivia, Acerola and Kahili to then challenge the Alola Champion.

The Four Island Guardians!
Defending Melemele Island is the Electric/Fairy guardian Tapu Koko. Defending Akala Island is the Psychic/Fairy Tapu Lele. Defending Ula'ula Island is the Grass/Fairy Tapu Bulu. And defending Poni Island is the Water/Fairy Tapu Fini.

Necrozma!
A black legendary seemingly on par with Solgaleo and Lunaala has been revealed, that seems to refract light and isn't an Ultra Beast??? Can only be found after finding all of the Ultra Beasts.

Pokemon Bank!
You can move Pokemon from Gen 6 forward as well as Pokemon from the Gen 1 VC games to your shiny Gen 7 game through Pokemon Bank. There will not be any backwards compatibility between Gen 6 and 7 because gently caress you. Gen 2 VC compatibility comes to SM and USUM in Dec/Jan.

Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon are 12 hours apart!
While both games use the 3DS internal clock, Pokemon Moon is 12 hours ahead of that and such things will be different in certain in game cutscenes even if you're playing Pokemon Sun at the same time! There are also the general version differences, but those are to be expected.

Team Skull!
It's ya boy Guzma, wishing to become a Trial Captain, so we'll do whatever we can to get the Bug Z-Crystal, as well as the Poison one. A bigger, more sinister plot? Nah, you must be joking, now get bent ya piece of trash!

The Aether Foundation!
A foil to Team Skull, these totally not evil guys house Pokemon from all over the world in an attempt to protect them on Alola's artificial island. Are they really as squeaky clean as they claim? Certain creatures that appear in their facility might say otherwise.

Ultra Beasts?!
Pokemon from another dimension! These crazy creatures are being investigated by the Aether Foundation and even Lillie's poor Cosmog is being experimented on. They have their own type, ability and actual names. We have UB01 Nihilego, UB02 Buzzwole and UB02 Pheromosa, UB03 Xurkitree, UB04 Kartana and UB04 Celesteela, and UB05 Guzzlord.

Trainer customization and Pokemon Amie returns!
Now you can yet again dress up your character with all kinds of clothing and hairstyles and EVEN REMOVE THE HAT. You can also dye your clothes different colours and have many more options than before, including wearing sweet sunglasses and even crazier hair. You can still pet your Pokemon in Amie with different backgrounds and a couple of extra features, such as a hairdryer to dry your Pokemon, a cloth to clean your muddy Pokemon and a thermometer to remove status from a Pokemon, such as Burn and Poison.

Battle Royal!
A 4 player mode where you fight in a free for all. The battle ends when one trainer's Pokemon all faint, so the strategy is gaining points by knocking out opposing Pokemon and keeping your Pokemon in good health!

Battle Tree!
It's a tree where you fight a load of trainers in a row. Some of them are pretty recognizable and tough trainers from other regions! Defeat them in battle to use them as allies in Double Battles. But to reach the tree itself, you must get past the deadly duo of Red and Blue. Seriously.

Poke Ride!
Call on various Pokemon to aid you in the field and overcome obstacles whenever you want. Poke Ride Pokemon are unlocked throughout the story and include Tauros, Lapras, Charizard, Stoutland, Mudsdale, Sharpedo and Machamp.

Festival Plaza!
Connect to other players in a cool mishmash of the Gen 5 Entree and Join Avenue features. Send other players to the right shop to gain Festival Coins, which can be used to customize your character, or buy different items for your Pokemon to raise their exp, or EVs, or just general stuff!

The Poke Pelago!
Your Pokemon in your PC boxes no longer sit around collecting dust, they can now visit five small islands to find new Pokemon, become stronger through drinks, or find rare items, such as the brand new Ice Stone to evolve your Alolan Vulpix. You can also hatch eggs and grow berries, all in real time while you piss about collecting Zygarde poo poo.

Rockruff's evolutions!
Depending on your version, Rockruff will evolve into either Lycaroc Midday Form in Sun, or Lycanroc Midnight Form in Moon. Both are pure Rock, with Keen Eye as an ability, but Midday Form can also have Sand Rush, while Midnight Form has Vital Spirit. Pssh, nothing personal, kid. There were rumours about Rockruff sharing a secret with he starters, but that seems to be a mistranslation, since we know the starter evolutions. Postgame, you can catch the other forme, meaning they're not version exclusive!

Rotom Pokedex!
Your Pokedex now has a Rotom inside of it to be your constant Navi. You can view a real time map and can set your own objective markers, as well as hunt for Pokemon using QR codes and even know which specific patch of grass they're hiding in! It's a bit sassy, but it's not too Navi like.

Poke Finder!
Use the Rotom Pokedex to take pictures of Pokemon in certain spots. Yes, seriously, this is Pokemon Snap. Sure, it isn't a Wii U HD version, but it's close enough! Take dynamic photos of all kinds of Pokemon to get "likes" by faceless masses. The more likes you get, the more your camera levels up and the more features you unlock!

Professor Oak's got a cousin!
Professor SAMSON Oak is studying Alolan formes. He seems to be an Alolan forme himself... wait is that racist?

Hyper Training!
Alongside Super Training to increase a Pokemon's EVs, you can now use Hyper Training to increase IVs of level 100 Pokemon using bottle caps. This wasn't possible before, as IVs were set when you got a Pokemon and could not be changed in any way. Now your main story friends can be used in gruelling competitive! This doesn't actually change the IVs, but instead pretends they're maxed out, meaning you can have full IVs as well as any Hidden Power.

Zygarde Cube!
Meet some totally normal tourists from Kalos and receive an item that lets you search for the Zygarde Cells and Cores. Depending on how many Cells you pick up depends on what your Zygarde can transform into, so look forward to collecting all 100 to get Complete form! The Cores you pick up will let your Zygarde learn different moves, so never threat, it still know Dragon Dance and Extremespeed.

Megas have returned!
Use your Z-Ring to Mega Evolve Pokemon. They're basically the same broken mess as in Gen 6, but are there any new ones? No. You buy the Mega Stones using BP, so get grinding!

Toss Pyukumuku back into the ocean!
Yes this deserves its own section, it's the best feature in these games!

There's still plenty to discover in the games themselves, so get going, enjoy the Alola region and then maybe play some other Pokemon games? There's 20 years worth of games to play and so, so, sooooooo many things to discover and explore. So get out there trainers and catch some goddamn Pokemon!

Wonder if Sun and Moon will make use of the N3DS' capabilities. The Gen VI games had some frame drops and slowdown issues. Hopefully there's less of that overall in Sun and Moon.

In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, you can draw forth a Pokémon’s power to its utmost limit with Hyper Training.

Pokémon grow stronger by raising their levels and increasing their base stats. However, their power is still affected by the individual strengths innate to each Pokémon. Now, with Hyper Training, Pokémon that have grown to Lv. 100 will be able to increase their individual strengths, which has never been possible before.

With Hyper Training, you can increase the strength of the Lv. 100 Pokémon you’ve been adventuring with!

Quick question: How does the normal gem interact with move type-changing abilities? If I give one to, say, Sylveon and pick a Normal attack, will it get boosted before turning it into Fairy?

It could be a new subsystem, like some of the affection bonuses you can get in Aime that don't affect competitive, but yeah its probably IVs.

Won't work. Gems only work with moves after any types have been modified.
