This is a great episode. Don’t make fun of renowned Dan Brown is also some primo side-splitting at the expense of Dan Brown's writing style.

Yeah, anybody who feels like they could enjoy the Dan Brown kind of mystery novels, but a bit smarter, should get a kick out of the insane quantities of esoteric knowledge in Foucault's Pendulum.

I read The Davinci Code when I was 12 and thought I was so smart and sophisticated lmao, though by 14 I realised every Dan Brown book is the same book. At 14 I was still reading really awful fantasy like The Sword of Truth so Dan Brown is truly bad.

Niko really does talk that fast. Whenever I listen to Sunday School Dropouts I'm constantly checking to make sure I didn't accidentally hit the playback speed button.

Listened to it fully and it was really great but everytime they've other guests on I'm just reminded how much better the show was pre-Collision, I just don't find the guy charismatic or funny. He seems perfectly nice as a person but I don't think he's interesting to listen to.

The other way around, Collision is great, the other guests just brought their petty talking points to drag the episode down

It's like if you asked a friend to recommend a good gangster film because you liked 'Goodfellas' and they respond with "hrmmm have you heard of this thing called Citizen Kane?"

Citizen Kane would be a good recommendation, because 99% of people haven't seen it. Same for Jane Eyre. They are classics, but a recommendation from somebody whose taste you trust can push people over the fence on whether to read them / watch them.

Anyway, the point when the guests on the latest episode jumped a shark for me was when that guy scolded Collision (?) for "effortshaming" Dan Brown's music career. Just lol, what a loving pussy

J mentions this on the episode, but it really is surprising that Da Vinci Code is a bigger hit than Angels and Demons, because even though it's still not a good book, poo poo at least happens in Angels and Demons

Recommending famous classics instead of related genre media is really interesting and cool and not lazy and kind of pretentious, agreed 100%.

Except unironically, because people should read classics, and should be reminded of them on the basis of the reasonable expectation that they never bothered to look into them, on account of the education system failing to make them interested.

Collision is a fine co-host and I enjoy his voice but the fact that he comes from a similar background to Friedman means that they seem to have a bit too much overlap with their interests and blind spots. It's why I like when other people come on, they actually break up the music/wrestling/gen X stuff that otherwise dominates the normal episodes.

The Vosgian Beast posted:

Seriously. A race against time to stop someone from using antimatter to blow up the Vatican and having a bunch of creepy elaborate murders based on the four alchemical elements was actually somewhat interesting. Even if the big evil henchman was an even more egregious stereotype than DaVinci Code's murderous albino, in this case a dangerously swarthy arab assassin with a literal boner for murdering white women.

And I never read any of the sequels but apparently one ends with Langdon choosing the render half the earth infertile via viral pandemic, which is just all kinds of :wtf:

This is a problem I've noticed in multiple podcasts where if two guys end up coming from a similar enough background and share enough interests, it tends to mean that they often get locked into viewing things in a certain way and can kind of reinforce each other into ruts.

It can also mean they have a good rapport though, so.
