It costs next to nothing to register a domain name. I figure some IT department has been tasked with buying up every possibility from a list of a thousand so the team doesn't get scooped when it does settle on one it wants to go with. The last thing they want is to decide on "Desert Knights" but be forced to pay some pasty kid from Wisconsin $50,000 for the URL. They'll be teamname.nhl.com in the end anyways.
