Everything exploded and now anything that uses the new app model is hosed. This includes things like the Start Menu and Settings app. File Explorer works until I right-click anything, Control Panel is fine until it tries to kick me into the Settings app.

One desktop app is telling me that it can't write to a C:\Users folder, which is weird but everything looks correct at a glance and I don't think I touched anything there. I'm just going to suck it up and do a refresh, which I didn't want to do because I'd have to reinstall apps. Luckily I can still log in for the BitLocker recovery key since there's no way to initiate the refresh from inside Windows right now.

Is there a way to keep the File Explorer pinned to the taskbar? It gets replaced with the window it opens making it hard to launch another file explorer (an extra right click but still)

My old school method is to create a custom toolbar that has a shortcut to My Computer or wherever. Also works for any other program you sometimes need multiple instances of.

Another one I recently learned (but has probably been around forever)

Instead of navigating to a place in command prompt, just shift-right click the folder in explorer and Open A Command Window Here.

And if you want more options (admin command prompt, powershell, etc) you can open the file menu/ribbon in that folder.

Well, simply refreshing Windows didn't fix all the issues I was having, as the Store was completely gone for some reason and manually installing it through PowerShell wouldn't make it work. Error log still had a ton of random events occurring. Guess I'm doing a full reset.

Everything was running fine until the forced update reboot hit too.

I dunno, if it was my desktop I could point to all sorts of unusual customizations but I've been leaving my tablet mostly stock to avoid this sort of thing; I don't want my only PC out of commission while traveling. All I know is that apps were working, reboot happened, apps stopped working, attempted fixing was only a partial fix until it broke worse and refresh didn't fix it completely.

Skarsnik was making a joke. Usually someone goes "Well GOD drat why can't Microsoft get it right?! All I want to do is mathematically prove the existence of the God Particle in 15 minutes and then test using an embedded particle accelerator! :v: " when Windows 10 shits all over itself.

If a refresh didn't fix it, nuke and pave with extreme prejudice - something got messed up during the install, like a corrupt file or interference from an angry God Particle.

Are there any alternative on screen keyboards for Windows 10 on tablets? I have an Asus Vivotab Note 8; the stylus is useful for some things, but I really wish the machine had a Swype-style keyboard like I have on my Galaxy Note 4.

If running or not running a service that is not marked as essential, occasionally is detrimental, and supposedly can be replaced by 3rd party software, is "some really weird stuff" then I've love to see what else qualifies. I also disabled the HomeGroup Provider service because I use plain SMB shares not dumb homegroups, is that weird? Edge isn't the default browser? I uninstalled the Zune player?

I admit that I felt a certain amount of shame after figuring out that my issue was, in a way, my own fault. But that's balanced by the parts where:
* it gave me zero feedback at failure, either in the app or the event log, as to why it went to poo poo -- despite that information being available (powershell actually produced error messages)
* the failure was kicked off by a standard win update
* a fragile, heavy system like appx is being used for components as basic as typing in the start menu

At the same time, when the approval process for "good code" is that it went out to insider fast-ring users -- a group of people who generally expect poo poo to be broken -- and disregarding reports of known failures. See anniversary update breaking game controllers left and right, both 3rd party and MS's own. This is not a totally rigorous process!

In the past I've cut MS a lot of slack over their OS not being perfect. I've been a computer janitor, I know how flaky hardware and people can be. Their job was impossible. But these days I'm very unsatisfied with their priorities. I don't feel like their main effort is making things work on my computer, it's now about building "platform" or "ecosystem" or whatever the gently caress their strategy with win10 is.

Android is also a great example of a fragile system that's getting worse. Sure, people gently caress up their phones because Android is easy to root and mess around with. But on the other hand, the phone you bought 6 months ago may not be getting OS updates anymore because support and compatibility testing is literally worthless.

So after a full reset the notifications button is to the right of the clock instead of to the left, what gives? Doesn't appear to be any way to move it.

I also have a mysterious 'defaultuser0' in my user folder and some quick googling says it's caused by the Anniversary update. Thanks, Microsoft.

The complaint is that the OS isn't a service. Their platform is and the OS is incidental to that service, so it's getting overlooked, and he feels that it's detrimental to the OS itself.

It's a valid criticism, though about five years too late.

Doing weird things to the system is something like hunting around and deleting the cortana folder. Someone doing that has earned it when their start menu gets broken.

Taking the firewall from 'off' to 'disabled' through the normal management tools is not that weird. It should not break the system the way it does.

There has been no reason to make a separate OS partition in well over a decade, don't do it as all you'll get is hassle.

SSDs have no performance benefits from having an OS partition -- one of the reasons people did that with spinning HDs was to put the OS & programs up at the fast part of the platter, and leave the slower part for static data.

OTOH if you're one of the people who got used to having separate OS & data partitions, it doesn't hurt anything either. The way that the SSD stores data is completely divorced from the file system / partition structure. So there's no issues with uneven wear or anything that some people claim will happen.

I wouldn't bother partitioning a 500gb drive, even though I'm normally one of those "separate OS & data partitions" people. (I like it just for organization & easier backups.)

I would have looked to blame it on something I'd done myself a whole lot sooner if not for "cortana stopped working" being a really common problem that lots and lots of people complain about. I doubt that they're all disabling the firewall or whatever.

I did it because I would have to reinstall Windows every 6 months. Purge just the OS and Programs and have your self-pornimportant documents on the second partition.
