I know there are quite a few of you in the Raleigh area, and if you go to shows, you've maybe heard of Faith in Ashes and Heron, two popular but now defunct local bands. Well, there's a new project formed with former members from those bands, and it's loving fantastic. They just played their first show a couple nights ago, and though I don't have any clips, they released an EP a few weeks ago and it's on Bandcamp. The drummer's a friend of mine, so I might be biased, but this is some great poo poo.

Awesome. More central NC metal is always a good thing.

Now that I'm divorced maybe I can finally finish the Ensrug album and put together a band and start playing out.

Hay guys

I've not listened to any new metal for about ten years. I think the last album I bought was Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower. So it's been loving ages, anyway!

Would any of you be so good to recommend me a handful of the best metal albums of the last decade (I'm sure there's a lot to choose from).

My metal tastes are pretty all-encompassing, but I don't really like power metal, or operatic symphonic stuff or any of the fruitier prog metal - I can only just stomach Dream Theater, and even then with a sense of shame.

Sincere appreciation in advance for any assistance you all can give!

p.s. currently listening to 'Back to Times of Splendour' by Disillusion, and I've loved that record since it came out - although I heard they went kind of lovely after that, which is a shame...

You should ask the general metal thread. This one is for black metal specifically.

I knew Inquisition has an album due out this year, but I missed all the advance tracks. Do Dagon's vocals sound weird to anyone else? I'm not sure if it's a production thing or if he's singing differently.

Yeah I want to say its a little bit of both now that I'm listening to the other few advance tracks. Still sounds cool as hell, just a little more reserved sounding than on Obscure Verses.

Anyone else heard of this project called, Zeal and Ardor?

I don't think I can say that it's solely black metal, but in the days of bands like Myrkur and Deafheaven it's still probably worth noting to fans of the genre. It features a lot of various musical influences, but it's almost more of a Death Grips mashup done in the spirit of black metal. Apparently the guy records all of his own spiritual songs, chain gang vocals and chants. What may have started off as a joke or experiment may grow into something of it's own. If you were a satanic slave in pre-civil war America, this would be your jam.

All the parts where it goes 'black metal' sound bad, and the goodish parts are where the black metal influence is least prominent.

I've been looking for more stuff like An Autumn for Crippled Children and Cold Body Radiation, who I think is the same person behind each project. I guess this falls under whatever the term is for post-rock influenced black metal. I've tried going down the DBSM path and most acts are either garbage or Alcest ripoffs. And yes, I'm a pussy, etc etc.

Less frog kinda makes it less endearing but I could see it having broader appeal (as far as that goes in black metal)

New Inquisition is good. Sounding better than Obscure Verses based on the first few listens.

Fallen Empire have been killing it recently on the atmospheric black metal front. Would really recommend the Mare Cognitum/Aureole split, Cepheide and Lluvia. There is a bunch of other recent stuff I haven't managed to listen to yet. bandcamp.fallenempirerecords.com
