It doesn't make sense. My guess is that most Japanese are naturally reclusive so they appreciate institutions that force them to socialize with others. High school was probably the last time I had friends, anyway

By college the fear of failure has dully developed.

actually it is an open secret that the japanese idol industry is owned entirely by the yakuza. given that yakuza are complete scumbags, they use their access to a massive, constantly replenishing supply of teenage girls about how you'd expect.
