Shouldn't all the loving wires lying around be a bit of a tipoff? Those should literally connect the boom to the launcher. Or are they jettisoned half a second before impact?

I think that's the point where colloquialisms intersect with the "proper" English terminology. On one hand yeah "condensation cloud" is the best fit, on the other hand when I say "atmospheric lensing" in the context of a gently caress-off huge explosion people usually understand the meaning.
