It's not bad, it's a brilliant idea. I can't even really fault Bush for allowing federal funding to go to schools that are online only (previously they had to be at least 50% on campus classes iirc) - maybe he did it a bit too early I guess is the worst you could really say...

But in execution it was a total scammy clusterfuck that barely graduated anyone, placed almost no one in a job, preyed on the most vulnerable (as scams do), and resulted in poo poo tons of people unable to pay off massive student loans which in the end means the taxpayer loses.

If online schools had more regulation and more rigorous accreditation that would be one thing but hey why do that when you can fleece a bunch of people. That kinda ties into the issue of online schools aren't taken seriously but that can change if they are serious institutions and not just fancy loan sharks.

Was Chuck E. Cheese pizza always horrifically terrible and I was just a dumb kid in the 1980s that didn't know good pizza from bad, or has it always been disgusting? I swear it was OK at 1980s birthday parties, but I went to a nephew's birthday party there a few months ago and the pizza was a piece of cardboard with a bit of tomato sauce on it and maybe a dry pepperoni or two. It was loving vile, yet had no flavor at the same time. It truly was some scientific poo poo to be gross and have no flavor, I tell ya' what.

A lot of the poorer less educated people in Alabama are Black, whereas most of Canada is White. It's probably not a racist dog whistle, but it's also bullshit that they couldn't find enough people who could read in the Deep South so they moved to Canada. But it apparently got the company owner some press and got a bunch of like-minded people to nod their heads in agreement. That's if the story is even true.

There are plenty of manufacturers who've moved to Southern states for cheaper labor that have no problem building poo poo. Are we really to believe this company picked the one spot where there weren't enough workers with a 5th grade education? And that instead of increasing wages, importing talent, or the job training they picked leaving the country as their only solution? Maybe it was a Canadian company that was outsourcing to Alabama and instead brought those jobs back to their country. That's the only way it makes sense.

Literally a thing that happened.

This story really pisses me off for a lot of reasons.

For one they say the UAW killed Detroit, yet somehow, through some magical fuckery, foreign companies were able to make, market, and sell cars ACROSS THE OCEAN for the same price or cheaper as their American counter parts. It wasn't :qq: we have to pay our workers a living wage. The cars were just not as good.

Two, the unionizing employees and VW actually had a GOOD relationship. VW was leaning towards unionization because everywhere else in the world they have union workers and its easier to figure out benefits and stuff. They were more or less luke warm on whichever way it went, and left it up to the workers.

Three, the Senators got involved on their own. VW didn't' want them interfering, and the workers sure as hell didn't. This poo poo is bordering on illegal the way the Senators were trying to union busting and interfering with the NLRB. loving parasite rear end in a top hat REpublicans.

The old concept of a DJ actually, like, curating a playlist and poo poo is done. There was a late-night guy on KLOS Classic Rock in LA that used to actually create a themed playlist (was it Jim Ladd?) with an experimental night where the tracks blended together and whatever. They got rid of him around 2010 and as far as I can tell they now have an iPod folder with "rock" set to random play because Nirvana, Incubus and The Eagles totally belong together.

Steve Jones (formerly of the Sex Pistols) has a show on KLOS that's kinda like that; he tends to organize around a theme. He also tends to bring on musicians and jam with them live on the air. AFAIK it's KLOS's highest rated show. He's more constrained than he used to be, when he was on Indie 103.1 he would literally play whatever the gently caress he wanted, including records, tapes, and CDs he brought with him from his home. Had one hell of a collection of B-sides. Honestly the show seems to have lost a little of it's energy but I tune in whenever I'm in the car at noon, then switch back to Pandora right after he's done.

another problem alabama kept having for awhile there was when their draconian immigration law kept getting foreign automotive executives arrested

Yada was stopped in Leeds, Alabama, at a checkpoint set up by police to catch unlicenced drivers. He was ticketed on the spot, despite the fact that he showed an international driver's licence, a valid passport and a US work permit.

Yada is the second foreign car executive to fall foul of the new law. Last month police officers arrested a German director of Mercedes-Benz for failing to carry a valid driver's licence. The move exposed Alabama to widespread criticism and ridicule.

The St Louis-based Post-Dispatch newspaper revelled in Alabama's embarrassment by publishing an open letter to foreign car companies encouraging them to pack their bags and move to the rival car-producing state of Missouri.

"We are the Show Me State, not the Show Me Your Papers State," it wrote, telling auto bosses: "You've got two choices. Either ask your executives to carry their immigration papers at all times, or move to a state that understands gemüchlichkeit."
