A fair amount of post rock would fit the bill, like Russian Circles or Caspian.

Isis is a really good suggestion. It even has screams to keep a metalish feel. Neurosis, too. Through Silver in Blood is a really good apocalyptic non-metal album.

To mind; Wreck & Reference, Those Poor Bastards, the entirety of crust punk and d-beat, a few Chelsea Wolfe track. That's all that comes to mind immediately.

Edit: +1 for synthwave in metal adjacent not-metal music.

OK so here's the tracking listing for Ghost's Popestar EP coming out on Friday.

1. Square Hammer
2. Nocturnal Me
3. I Believe
4. Missionary Man
5. Bible

Tracks 4 and 5 will probably be irony overdoses or something. If the other songs are like Square Hammer it should be good/barely metal.

Pretty much. Maybe we should have cut the post-rock at Russian Circles? I guess post-metal counts as metal? I've been out of metal for too long.

Better suggestion hopefully: Big Black.

E: Later Ulver? Like Shadows of the Sun era.

And Perturbator. The guy even used to be a black metal guitarist, before switching to solo synth artist.

It was a joke suggestion though, since the stuff is probably still gonna stick out from a metal playlist.

For a more serious suggestion, Jess & The Ancient Ones.

It's always been very cool to me that metal dudes shifting into electronic music almost always make the lamest stuff possible. Ulver(although they were never very good anyway) or those Burzum ambient albums are other examples.
