I think Matt and Trey said that Randy only got more screentime as the show went on because they related more to him over the kids as they got older. Also half the side characters you saw in the first couple seasons have vanished, because unlike the Simpsons they have the sense to shitcan one-note characters once they've run their course instead of giving them backstories as an excuse to pad out episodes.

I think it's a great show most of the time, even most of the political episodes are great because they stay funny. There's only a few of them where they forget to tell a joke and it becomes libertarian apologetics (that episode where Tweek's dad's coffee shop gets run out of business by Not-Starbucks and everyone in town thinks this is a great thing because ~*~the free market~*~ is the worst example I can think of)
