what is a Touhou

Touhou is a series of shmups created by one Ota 'ZUN' Jun'ya, in which cute girls shoot a lot of bullets at each other and then have tea parties. It has an incredibly large fanbase, possibly on account of that aforementioned 'cute girls' thing, and as a result an incredible amount of fan-created material - music, comics and games of all shapes and sizes.

what is Labyrinth of Touhou

Labyrinth of Touhou was a dungeon crawler loosely styled after games like Wizardry or Etrian Odyssey. It had a relatively loose plot and was mostly an excuse to run around in a dungeon with an ever-growing party comprised of the Touhou cast. The sequel, Labyrinth of Touhou 2 came out some time later, and was an improvement in almost every way. This thread will be covering the latter game.

It's not a perfect game - the creators of the game weren't professional game makers, and it shows at times. Being a classic JRPG, it can get awfully grindy near the endgame as well. Nevertheless, I think it's fun enough that it's worth showing off.

Some notes

There's a general Touhou thread here. While a certain amount of digression is expected, please take discussions that stray too off-topic there.

Please spoiler-tag anything that hasn't been shown in the LP yet. There isn't much of a plot, but it's still there. Other than that, be polite and have fun discussing your fave 2hu waifus.

I think the text size for the screenshots is too small for you to use them demonstratively. If they have dialog on them, you should write out the dialog, and you can't really use them to show the status page at all. At least not at that size.

Inadequately
Oct 9, 2012
Fair enough, I'll upscale them. The dialogue screenshots are mostly used to show the full-body picture of a character whenever they're first introduced.

V Will do.

Question about the Archives, are we basically adding in every single thread that is finished on SA, or is it a certain type? I am asking because my current Alice LP is far, far more conversational and casual than my previous ones (the current episode is half Miz Kriss and I talking about anime) and while I am having a lot of fun posting it I don't want to poo poo up the Archives if it's more designed for more game-focused commentary.

If you complete the LP and want it to be archived, it qualifies. I think I've only ever heard of baldurk turning down one applicant, and only because there were already four other LPs of the same game on the archive. And I think he may have gone on and archived it anyway.

The only ones I've ever heard of Baldurk refusing were anime porn games and/or Fate/stay night and Tsukihime, but he relented on the latter due as the primary objections to those were how much space/bandwidth they'd take up, and that was back when the archive was a tiny thing. You should be good!

Hey everybody. I am sure none of you remember me, but I started a SSLP of an old Sega Master System game called Kenseiden last year. The LP died because my life upturned itself (including spending time in the hospital twice for pneumonia complicated by neurological problems). I still think the game is worthy of an LP, and I hate leaving something unfinished. But I am not sure of the protocol here. It was my first LP, I would like to finish it, but I do not know how to go about it. Should I just try to revive the old thread? Should I start a new thread? (and if so, should I re-post the old updates or start over?) or should I just forget the whole idea?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Assuming that the old thread has been archived, you can't revive it. Generally, you'd link to the old thread for the people who have archive access and want to see it, but repost the updates in the SSLP Test Poster and link to those from the OP, then resume from there with new updates as you normally would.

Well, I'm not actually finished with my current LP yet, but hey, I've got something to test post.

-----------

Thread title: Etrian Odyssey V: It's not a phase, Mom, my real name is Thunderclap Fencer!

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Legends (世界樹の迷宮Ⅴ: 長き神話の果て/Sekaiju no Meikyuu V: Nagaki Shinwa no Hate, lit. "Labyrinth of Yggdrasil V: End of the Long Myth") is a first-person dungeon crawler RPG released in Japan on August 4th, 2016, and is not currently out in the US or Europe yet. It's the fifth main entry in the Etrian Odyssey series, and the seventh overall (not including Etrian Mystery Dungeon). Much like the previous games in the series, EO5 is all about exploring pre-made dungeons with characters you create yourself, while evading deadly FOEs on the field and occasionally running into a random encounter that's capable of smashing your party into a fine paste. Also cartography.

EO5 is more of a return to form after EO3 and EO4 experimented with giving you more things to do outside of the Labyrinth, which were...shall we say, of varying degrees of fun/not fun. In EO5, there is nothing to do but explore the Labyrinth and do sidequests, which are almost all based around going back to areas you've already explored. The plot's also extremely minimal, almost mirroring EO1, in that you get some bits and maybe a side story, but all of the actual plot is saved for literally right before the final boss. This return to form's also shown in the class designs (gameplay, not visual), which eschews the class-mixing encouraged by EO3/4 subclassing and EOU/EO2U Grimoires and instead have each class be pretty much self-contained.

Hold up. Not out in the US or Europe? I don't know Japanese!

Lucky you, then, because this is a translation LP! I don't know the first thing about Japanese either, so I'm going to be joined by Clarste and alcharagia, who are doing the roles of translator and editor, respectively (also some extra translations from BlitzBlast).

Clarste and alcharagia aren't just going to be helping behind the scenes, though--they'll be joining me fairly frequently as co-commentators.

Co-commentary? You mean varying up BBCode, which ends up looking ugly as hell?

Nope. To distinguish who's talking at any given time, we'll be using some wonderful portraits drawn by my friend oB2Ko Mario.

Ragnar

Clarste

alcharagia

Is this gonna be another narrative LP like EO2U?

You know it.

Why are all the music track titles really simple?

Because the OST isn't actually out yet and I have no clue what the real track names'll be, so I just opted for really simplistic titles.

Is there a spoiler policy?

On the off-chance that someone here actually knows the plot of EO5: even though there's barely any plot until the very end of the main story and the very end of the postgame, please don't spoil it. Not even in tags.

That's...weird. Which paragraphs are you talking about? The race/class descriptions are all un-italicized, and aside from system text (the leaf thing) and Edgar's dialogue, those're pretty much the only things that shouldn't be italicized.

Oh, I think I just got it. Are the large chunks of boilerplate explanation meant to read as "in character" between the three LPer chatheads? If so then that explains why most of the update is italicized and in which case disregard what I've said then.

Pretty much all of the boilerplate explanation stuff is my own commentary, yes, with some of it coming from Clarste.

My general rule with italics is that anything that's not strictly in-game text or narrative dialogue is italicized.

This was a long time ago when Baldurk didn't want to have too many LPs of a single game. He has since offered to host Gemclod at the LP Archive. I've accepted and never actually got to it (it requires some messing with the HTML). So yeah, it's my fault. Permanent First post:

God Eater 2: Rage Burst could be described as a Monster Hunter-like anime with something akin to a plot going on besides hunting down dinosaurs and other primal animals for parts to make better stuff. I have never played a MH game outside of a few hours on a PSP in ye olde days, so part of the appeal of this game was satisfying the curiosity of it being a similar game to MH as I, at the time, thought I would enjoy such a genre of game. I did, so here I am. :v:

The version I will be playing is a Console-to-PC port, specifically from the Playstation Vita, and Playstation 4. Astonishingly enough for such a game, it's a good port on the PC. It behaves itself when alt-tabbing, has configurable keymapping, and otherwise doesn't make my PC weep for mercy from horrible CTDs, memory leaks, or other strange issues that usually stem from console ports. Not to say that the game is perfect, however in my experience aside from multiplayer I have had little to no issues with the simple act of loading and playing the game. Although m+kb is an option, I will be playing with a 360 controller.

Speaking of Multiplayer, like Monster Hunter, this game also has small party multiplayer for up to 4 people. Unfortunately there is no hot drop in. Players can only join during the organization of the group. Before the most recent patch, there were some real strange frame rate issues with MP that had something to do with players' monitor's refresh rates or other quasi-mystical voodoo. Post-patch, most of the FPS issues have been resolved. Fellow God Eaters, located in the North America district, are welcome to join in on the non-story, free hunts.

Rules
-No spoilers of events, places, people, creatures, or "Other" terms not covered by the latest update.
-Don't be a creep. Yes, there will be some :catstare: + :japan: situations here. Most of which is in the form of fanservice-y clothing I will be avoiding and one particular NPC, and no, I'm not referring to the scantily clad catgirl analogue. This is a japanese anime game set in the future, you can probably make a bingo sheet out of the tropes that this, and a lot of other similar media share.
-That being said, the ESRB rating is Teen. Blood, Mild Language, Partial Nudity, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, Violence. If your work would frown upon seeing the previously mentioned catgirl analogue smashing monsters with a giant gently caress off hammer, then you'd probably shouldn't watch these at work!
-Forum thread participation will be low, outside of organizing free missions. I will ultimately be in charge of the character's loadout aside from the initial weapon category choices due to how dramatic a properly set loadout will have an effect on a mission

Update list
(Sandcastle note: Part 0: Gameplay Test Video, will not be included in the LP. I am aware of the microphone issue and it will be addressed. Using this as a demo of the video fidelity. Most gameplay videos will be 10 minutes or less, rarely up to 20 minutes.)
Part 1
Part 2
etc

------------------------------

Second post:

(Sandcastle note: This part is hazy as I'm not entirely sure GE2 has a delete profile option, and there's only three profiles. I can replay missions and cinematics, however some of the finer points such as the audience's choice on the weapon category timing is a bit murky to my memory.)

First video: Splash screen + Opening animation cinematic

(Sandcastle note: Unrecorded Prologue video here, expect similar visual fidelity to the gameplay test video, sans microphone input, in these sorts of cutscenes. "Red Rain" & "Compatibility Test")

Audience participation: Weapon category choices, the basic capabilities of and diversity.

------------------------------

For the Sandcastle:

There will be NPCs talking to the PC. Some of which have drawn art, while the others (of varying importance to the game's plot) can only be seen via in-game 3D model. All of the 3D models will have similar lighting, however getting a clear view of the face will sometimes be difficult to acquire. which one should I use?

Examples to follow:

: I am a drawn test, 75 by 75 pixels. This is how my dialogue outside of cutscenes will look like; Ulvirich copying the lines here.

Let's Play The Stanley Parable

The Stanley Parable started as a free Half-Life 2 modification, released in July of 2011 by Galactic Cafe.

It was then remade in October of 2013 in the source engine and sold as a stand-alone game.

This is a short game with a lot to say. I think it is best to go into it unspoiled so I won't say much more about this game here.

Please don't post any spoilers, but do discuss the content and themes of what's going on in the episodes already posted. A big part of the Stanley Parable is trying to figure out just what is going on in this game. This will be a short Lets Play, only 3 or 4 episodes and then an analysis at the end that goes through and discusses the themes and messages in the game.

I'm not operating on a release schedule but expect one episode a week. I'll post updates here.

In case you didn't notice, the youtube links on that LP go to supergreatfriend's personal website, which he no longer hosts. The pages hosted embedded youtube players that played the relevant episode that the table of contents linked to. There are a ton of LPs on the archive, it's impossible for Baldurk to know how every one of them is organized, so in this case it'd be up to supergreatfriend to shoot Baldurk a message asking for the youtube links to be replaced with... youtube links, instead of the ones that were originally there when it was first archived.

Procedure question: I'm eyeing my next LP once Avernum finishes up, and am considering doing Taskmaker, an ancient shareware game. You can still find downloads of the demo freely available online, but it requires a registration code to unlock the full game. I've emailed the dev and I get the impression he doesn't much care about selling new reg codes for his 20+-year-old game. If I were to obtain permission from him to post a reg code in the LP (making clear to him of course that this would basically mean there was another reg code publicly available for everyone to see), how would I go about clearing that with the mods? Just PM a mod with a copy of the email?

Despair will never let you down.
Malice will never disappoint you.

So I'm going to be LPing a visual novel next, but before I can get to work on that, I need to work out a bit of a technical detail: What's a good size for headshots? This is the first time a game doesn't give me fixed headshots I can work with, I need to make them myself (rather annoyingly so by painstakingly editing them out from screenshots, as there doesn't seem to be a sprite rip for this game and the tools that were suggested for extracting data from the game's files don't seem to work with this version), so I've got free reign when it comes to size. I've seen both 75x75 and 64x64 used, but I'm not sure which is the best for me. So I'll just post some pictures and maybe you can tell me what looks best given the source material's resolution.

First, the original - the thick black outline is what I added to kind of hide that the attempt to remove the background graphics is a bit more coarse than I'd like, and even then you can see that a few stray pixels got away:

Now, three different resizes that I had considered.

100x100:

75x75:

64x64:

I'm tending towards 64x64, but that's because of my tendency to go towards smaller images and because I kind of want to hide my crummy image editing. So because of that, I'm looking for second opinions, and once I decide on something, I'll work on cooking up a proper test post.

64x64 or even smaller, frankly. Portraits need to provide enough detail to reliably indicate who's talking; anything extra beyond that is largely wasted space. The portraits for my Avernum LP are 45x45 and I don't feel like they're too small.
