...except that it features James Corden who is just a black hole of humour. I assume the comment was talking about the three rather than Corden because of so all hope is lost. Actually the fact he has his own show in the US shows just how far things have gone in the wrong direction.

Only reason he is popular is because he drives with celebs and sings with them.

If you don't know who he is then count yourself lucky, he's been in a bunch of crappy TV shows and movies in the UK and his schtick is to generally be loud, annoying and to talk over other people. Dude tries way too hard and it's loving cringeworthy.

I mean most talk shows have musical guests on and they perform, Corden is so desperate for attention HE NEEDS TO SING TOO...

His main failing for me is replacing the amazing, funny and charming Craig Fergison, who should have stayed on TV forever. For those who didnt catch his show he basically did the good "Late show" period conan obrien thing with lots of goofy skits and props, and irreverent interviews with people who are used to having talk show hosts kiss their asses.

Ferguson was so good. He could have the most boring guest on, like an author or something, and make it an entertaining interview because hes just that entertaining on his own.

I like James Corden. On his own he's a bit more of a family entertainer, hasn't got the zingiest of lines. But sit him next to someone on it and he is a great catalyst.

See how he maximizes Sean Lock by his reactions:

Those are videos of him sitting next to someone who is funnier than he is. But then that's not really a difficult task. It's almost like you're suggesting him being there makes people who are known for being funny, be funny. ...which is a really odd analysis.

I said he makes them funnier, also his reactions are funny by themselves. Hence he's a good foil or sidekick.

No, you didn't get me. Do you watch Tom & Jerry and think "the cat getting hurt is the fun bit, get rid of the smug mouse"?

To not derail too far, the three Top Gear stooges are funny in this exact sort of way. They play off each other. "Brutish Jeremy" isn't very funny for very long on his own, but since he can play the brute to the tweed and the hamster, there is no end to it. And once you get to know the characters, they and the writers know how to fill your expectations. "Haha the brute was brutish! I bet the tweed is going to do something tweedish now". Sounds inane, but it works. It's what makes people say they have good chemistry.

Still, it's ok to not like James Corden.

I watch Corden's show semi-regularly. Mainly because I like Reggie Watts but I also like his format of having all the guests on the couch at once. A lot of the time it's dull and he just has to rotate asking them questions, which is easy to spot and turn off, but sometimes the guests really get along and everyone plays off each other so it's a good time. He definitely likes to sing too much but he's been on broadway and won a Tony as I understand it so it's not like that doesn't make sense. No one was going to come in and be the new Craig Ferguson though.

One of Ferguson's advantages were him and the writers being so different from the other late night shows. Corden has the problem of coming up with pretty much the same monologue jokes about daily events as all the other shows, but at the 12:30 timeslot you're telling the same jokes that Daily Show, Conan and Colbert already got through that evening.

Speaking of TV, I hope the Grand Tour release gets staggered on a weekly basis so I can follow the thread when each episode is released. That is how they're planning to release it, right? If it all came as one lump sum the thread would just explode at once and I would just avoid it until I had watched the whole season, and that's a lot less fun.
