I've been following the manga for a while. I think of the story as a mixture of Hikari No Go mixed with Your Lie in April. I loved the moon in this episode.

I know people have been bringing up Your Lie in April as a comparison a lot, but 3 Gatsu is much better also it has more food That said, I can see why comparisons would be drawn. There's the tragedy in the four-eyes' lives, their one skill that simultaneously supports and tortures them (piano and shogi), and then there are lady character(s) that bring a light to their lives. Both series also balances silly comedy with melodramatic moments. I did read all of Your Lie in April and it did end when it needed to, I give it that much. I don't think the lighthearted bits worked as well as they do in 3 Gatsu though. There's something about Rei and his connection with the Kawamotos and his emotional journey in shogi and real life that I'm much more invested in and Umino's art style really conveys both sides of happy and heart wrenching moments very effectively. Vol 12 of the manga is out, and there's a special edition that comes with a booklet containing some kind novelette written by Nishio Ishin, with a crossover between the Monogatari series and March Lion. Wonder if it's any good. Struck me that there's quite a bit of crossover in the voice actors picked for the anime adaptations as well. Anyway, first episode was quite sublime. This will however not be a candidate for this year's best anime, so you know!

First episode was good, there was a moment i really liked, when he gets that second text from the older sister. it was very on-point with depicting depression that small exchange, and the relation and understanding it set in a small moment i really liked i guess (incidentally yuri!!! on ice had a pretty real feeling of anxiety too, not just in his performance but in his whole homecoming sequence). Small things like that always feel like a good way to get me to care about characters/want to see them succeed and it got it right off the bat

Depending on how far into the story it goes, March Comes in Like a Lion might be the last anime to save anime this year. If they get really far into the story, it might save anime twice. I think the varied cast and the multi-faceted nature of them and the story helps 3-Gatsu a lot, while Your Lie in April is kind of just more stereotypical and it was headed down one straight path. Which in a way, again, is good. It knew what it was and where it was gonna go.

I was shocked to see this was SHAFT, but also not shocked. Good too see them flex their style beyond what they're known for. The quality of some of the background images were so good that they were distracting me from the character drama setup.

I started watching this on a whim and was totally caught off guard. I pretty much liked everything about the first episode (art, animation, directing, sound, music.. all of it.) The burning question for me though, may already be answered. In the latest manga, we find out how much our main protagonist makes in a year. I won't spoil it, but you can read it on your own if you're interested. Anyway, I did a quick search and found out that the average salary for a Japanese school teacher is about ¥7 million per year. That's a fairly good salary, if you ask me. Interesting to see how well the top-10 professional Shogi players fare. You see these guys all sitting in their rooms with just the two players and some dude keeping score. Who pays for all this? I don't see that it's being broadcasted or anything. Does the Japanese government fund this stuff just because?

i'd like to say the opening scene was stultifying, rei absolutely alone, no one walking in his direction and then we meet the kawamotos, and they drag rei kicking and screaming out of his hell. family is what you make of it, perhaps third time is a charm

The manga also has end-pages written by pro or retired pro shogi players who spend a page writing about how the actual shogi scene works, and it seems like the the mangaka has tried to keep the setting as realistic as possible. I finally got to watch episode one, and holy shiiiiit I was right, I used to live literally in walking distance to there up until just a few months ago. It's an incredibly cool area sandwiched between the bay, the "old Tokyo" northeast, and the shiny new areas of the man-made islands, which is why you get all those riverways and bridges. Easily my favorite part of Tokyo, and a perfect setting for this story. (and now I feel like poo poo for not having read any of the manga while I was living there aaaugh)      You can see the Tsukishima train station Rei took, the Sumiyoshi Shrine, the elementary and middle schools, etc.  The red marker is Tsukudako-bashi (bridge), the one from the images above. Ueno, on the right, is pretty stereotypically "old Tokyo," and Ryogoku is the big traditional Sumo area. Toyosu is a fancy new area, and those islands are the man-made islands; Odaiba and Tokyo Big Sight are just past Shijo-Mae there off-screen (this is also around where the 2020 Olympics will be held). Minato and Chiyoda are some of the biggest business districts, with the area surrounding the Imperial Palace (the island of green by the Chiyoda text) home to both a bunch of prestigious business headquarters, the major national government buildings like the National Diet, and tons of skyscrapers. You can basically draw a line down the middle of this image (slightly to the right, actually), and you've split it between "old and traditional" and "new and shiny," though it's a fuzzy one (see the Tsukiji fish market a little on the left).  Sendagaya, where Rei went to play that shogi match, is the area between the two green areas just below the Shinjuku text. Probably took him about 40 minutes to get there depending on how far from the station he had to walk.

Rei could easily be part of that family, but instead he constantly wants to push them away. Lets hope Shinbou can keep this up for a whole season. Judging by peoples opinions of the source, it seems there's plenty of good material for him and Shaft to work with.

I can skim over those two pages of manga in just a few seconds, but being forced to have my gaze linger on each detail of Rei's room while listening to the sounds of his neighborhood really wowed me. Great directing. "Don't change what's already perfect about the source material, just make it shine like it never could in still, black and white panels." or something like that. So, I've been trying to learn Japanese for fun (reason I give: to translate design publications, real reason: manga), and I've been doing it for a while now. A (Japanese) co-worker i met recently offered to bring me some manga, and one of the volumes he brought is March Comes in Like a Lion vol 1. I've already read everything translated so far, but it's nice to see it in person, on paper. Hard as gently caress to read, though, tbqh. No furigana :'( if I don't know a word, I have to handwrite it to pull it up, and goddamn some of the chars are so tiny i can barely figure out the radicals. But seriously, overall I was just happy he brought me stuff, but seeing that volume was so thrilling to me. Like "ohhhh I know this one!!" Plus, I'm so used to seeing scans on a screen, I forgot how nice real books are. And the font choices/proportion make much more sense than in the scanlations, and flow much better.

The scanlations get a little better as you go along and definitely look nicer now; it seems like the redrawing for them borders on being hellish at times. I think it's more or less just Kewl0210 doing it now since it's not a Be With You project anymore? Anyway yeah I bought all of the volumes too and it's really nice to flip through them

I wish I had something more substantive to say than "this was a good episode" but I really don't, it just makes me really happy to see how well the manga comes across onscreen and how great it is at evoking that emotion you get when reading it. I love the pacing, too, since it's a lot easier to read through quickly without really appreciating some of those details.
