Continuing trip report on Oracle of Seasons. I'm finding myself lost for what to do next at times, wandering around, and I've had to look up guides twice now.

Part of the problem is Moosh - I don't know whose brilliant idea that was but in order to make him fly over multiple holes you have to really mash that A button. It's really unforgiving and I never would have realized he could even do that on my own, because I tried it and it didn't work, so I just assumed he couldn't hover that far.

The dungeons are good, though.

I remember getting the item for the kangaroo, was there a way to choose which animal buddy to summon? I think I had to use the other two at least once though.

Yep you can get the item for any of the three of them. Each one has a certain requirement you have to fulfill to get them, with Moosh being the default in Ages and Ricky the default in Seasons. It doesn't change very much overall - the biggest thing is that Dimitri allows for some very minor sequence breaking in one of the games - but it's kinda neat.

It's something like you can find one at a certain area depending on where you go, and that same one will show up guaranteed in the second game on a linked playthrough.

I don't know what method the game uses to determine which animal is the one you befriend; it may be as simple as whichever one you encounter next when you find the flute. Until I remembered his ground pound (I hadn't used Moosh much until I needed him), when I was struggling with the holes I was REALLY thinking I got the short end of the stick with Moosh since the other two have attacks.

Ah, that explains it then since I played Seasons first.

Which of the three companions you get depends on when /how you get their Flute, in each game there's one for sale, one as a mini game prize, and one that's shoved at you by default if you didn't get one of the other two. I think Ricky is the 'default' in Seasons and Moosh is the default in Ages. Also everyone should pick Dimitri because you get to ride a Dodongo and he doesn't have the button-mashing thing going on.

In order to get all of the rings in Oracles you have to play both games twice, and whichever game you played first on your first run, you have to play second on your second run. Capcom!!

Very few of them are useful or even interesting don't try and get all the rings.

You can't even get them all on VC because of the Advance shop being inaccessible.

Yup. Definitely don't try to get them all, unless you, like me, must fill all of the screens in every Zelda game.

What are you even booing here?

It's cool if you're an insane person and want all the rings. But I am just a normal person and I was content to complete a linked game. Maybe some day I will do it the other way around, but the rings were essentially useless anyway so gently caress them.

Bicyclops
Aug 27, 2004

In my defense, while the fault is definitely mostly with me for being an insane person, it is really pointless for games to include things which are really tedious to get, even if they are not important for completing the game, and many of the rings in the Oracle games are tedious to get or involve abusing the RNG. Some of that is also true of Minish Cap, and it's why I hope Capcom doesn't work on Zelda games anymore.

Winifred Madgers

I'm pretty happy just using the Zora ring at the moment, although the one that keeps floors from collapsing is also one I keep handy.

One thing I have definitely noticed, just coming off A Link Between Worlds, is the astounding amount of rupees in that game compared to most of the others. When Ravio showed up at the end I legit thought the reveal was going to be that due to all the money he got from me renting and buying all the items he had collected enough to rebuild Lorule.

Many of the people who made those games were hired by Capcom and are part of Nintendo's current Zelda team. The guy who directed those games directed Skyward Sword and is directing the new game.

4/6 palaces down in Z2. Think it's time to grind out a couple levels before moving on. P4 was a lot easier than P3. I vaguely remember things getting easier up till the end game. But man, Death Mountain > P3 is just all sorts of hosed up.

For someone who is familiar with both Z2 and Dark Souls. Which is harder?

I mean, something changed, because whatever problems I may have had with Skyward Sword, they were very different from the Zelda Capcom games, which did all kind of have a "feel" to them.

Death Mountain was the part I really, really struggled with in that game, but I don't recall having a terribly time with any of the palaces. I did spend most of the game overlevelled and made sure to get every heart and magic container as soon as possible, however.

Hug the fence and never use all the carrots. I spent that whole race feeling like I barely had a grip on the stick and would lose control any second. 3ds is kinda bad if you have to use the stick without letting go for more than a few seconds.

Yeah, the Kokiri evolved into little tree spirits made of wood and the Zoras were once green enemies that resembled the Creature from the Black Lagoon and they apparently evolved into the Rito from Windwaker. The Gorons have had some stylistic changes but they never changed much from their first appearance.
