Update 17: Proper Nouns

This music plays for the entire update.

So, last time we blitzed through all of East Sector. Or, most of East Sector.

One area that I skipped originally (because I wasn't sure there was anything of interest) was Protocol Forest.

New enemies, of course, fall under 'anything of interest'.

Kudos to using a Gargoyle as a base for the base.
Name: Gargoylemon
Level: Armor (Approximately equivalent to a Champion)
Location: Amaterasu East - Protocol Forest, Protocol Ruins

Drops: Dark Power 2

3 STR, 3 DEF, 5 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
1 FIRE, 2 WATER, 3 ICE, 1 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 176, BIT: 350

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Dark Matter (Magic-Dark)

Name: Okuwamon
Level: Ultimate
Location: Amaterasu East - Kicking Forest, Protocol Forest

Kicking Trees: Amaterasu East - East Wire Forest, Divermon's Lake, Wind Prairie

Drops: None

4 STR, 3 DEF, 2 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
2 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 1 WIND, 3 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 172, BIT: 320

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: None

Gargoylemon isn't too tough - a good fire or wind tech will put it down, since it's fairly squishy. Okuwamon isn't much better, though it can hit a little hard. They both have middling speed and defenses, so whatever works for taking them out.

Something I mentioned in the thread, but didn't mention in the last update, was that the game finally seems to have figured out how to subtly guide the player. The devs ramped up the difficulty as soon as we started going west (the wrong way), culminating in very difficult enemies that probably would have ended me had I not been grinding. At the very end, only after the player has ignored all other hints, does the game tell you 'you hosed up, go the other way'.

So points to it - that are immediately taken away by Knightmon :argh:

Yeah, I feel like Knightmon would have been okay if there was another super obvious hint before that. This way, if you continue onward, the fault lies with the player 100% instead of 75%.

Somehow, the red color makes it easier to navigate. Maybe the contrast between the red leaves and the purple ground is better? I don't know.

Moving right along, we've entered Protocol Ruins.

What a coincidence this update is going up on Halloween.
Name: Mummymon
Level: Ultimate
Location: Amaterasu East - Protocol Ruins

Drops: Mind Chip

3 STR, 3 DEF, 4 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
1 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 1 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 175, BIT: 400

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Dark Fear (Magic-Dark)

Second verse, same as the first. This guy's just a slightly less powerful Gargoylemon, so the same strategy works on Mummymon. Gargoylemon and Mummymon are the only enemies in the area, so it's actually a pretty good place to grind MetalGreymon.

Unfortunately, there's literally nothing different in this area. No chests, no unique area, nothing. I'm offended. :colbert:

That being said, there is one Digimon of interest.

...Game.

...What.

BK MagnaGargomon[sic]: You wanna fight with me?
Kite: All right, I'll fight you!

GAME.

Kite: OK, let's begin!
BK MegaGargomon: It won't be that easy to beat me!

PICK A NAME AND STICK TO IT.

Holy poo poo, do they write the names individually for each textbox or something? Geniunely curious.

BK MagnaMegamon/BK MegaGargomon/BK WhatIsHisFuckingNameMon has very goofy shoulders.

Name: BK MegaGargomon (Boss)
Level: Mega
Location: Amaterasu East - Protocol Ruins

Drops: Wild Helmet (After Defeat)

4 STR, 4 DEF, 3 SPR, 3 WIS, 2 SPD,
2 FIRE, 1 WATER, 3 ICE, 2 WIND, 1 THUNDER, 3 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 450, BIT: 900

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Mega Break (Largely Decreases Enemy Speed),
Giant Missle (Physical-Machine)

So, BK Whatevermon. Taking a look at his stats, use Magic over Physical attacks, but be careful - both of his attacks are physical based, so that 4 STR will be put to good use.

Regular attack is just a boring shockwave, something that I've seemed to notice happens more as the Digimon get bigger.

Probably because the development team was lazy/didn't know how to make interesting Giant Digimon attacks without causing issues.

Oh my god, the face on those shoulder pads and chest. WHO DOESN'T WANT THAT.

Giant Missile fires, uh, giant missiles. Shoulder pads are dangerous, y'know.

My strategy for dealing with him was fairly simple. Lead with WarGrowlmon and use the two party-wide buffs (+Def, +Str) and then wreck his poo poo. I was honestly hoping Monmon would Blast to Cannondramon, if only so I could use Cannondramon's Signature Tech on him; the Tech does extra damage to Machine Digimon, which BK MegaGargomon is. Alas, it was not to be.

...Yeah, don't gently caress with Renamon anymore, she will wreck your poo poo with her Techs.

Kite: Of course! I've been battling everyone!
BK MegaGargomon: Wow, that's amazing! I'll give you this!
Kite: Yeah! I got the Wild Helmet!
BK MegaGargomon: Well, good luck. I'll be cheering for you!

And that's the extents of our adventures in Protocol Forest and Ruins! A pretty nice helmet for Kumamon, and a battle with a Digimon that doesn't know its name.

(sometimes i hate this game)

(sometimes?)

Back in Wind Prairie, this trooper is right in front of the exit to Kicking Forest.

Trooper: Hey, you! Who are you?! You're suspicious. Let's Digimon Battle to see who you are!

What kind of loving logic is this

GET AWAY FROM THE CAMERA. BAD BEAR BAD

Dolphmon got fried by one Electro Bolt, and Monzaemon wasn't much of a threat. Honestly, I miss that other guy. I had to actually try to beat him.

Also of note: Cardmon has leveled up. Tree's got three cards around it now, and Water's got two, and they hit pretty hard. Doable, but there are better options. Still, the card rewards are nice because I don't have to battle trainers to get them.

Card minigame plz

Moving right along.

Kicking Forest! No Veemon sidequest this time, (un)fortunately.

New enemies in the area:

In-game model:
Name: Cherrymon 2* (Red Colored)
Location: N/A

Kicking Trees: Amaterasu East Sector - Kicking Forest
Amaterasu South - Bulk Swamp, Tranquil Swamp, Bios Swamp, Jungle Grave Phoenix Bay, Ether Jungle

Drops: TP Chip 1

3 STR, 3 DEF, 3 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
1 FIRE, 3 WATER, 2 ICE, 3 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 1 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 203, BIT: 410

Regular Attack: No Element (Drains Enemy HP)
Technique: None

There's also plenty of Ebidramon to go around. Also of note: Cherrymon will only appear if you kick the trees. The drop is pretty useful - one free TP is one extra training session, so +8 in any given stat - but given that you'll also be fighting Cardmon, it's not very sustainable.

Before we keep heading through Kicking Forest, we'll be taking a swift detour.

At least this probably means more bosses. This game's bosses are quite alright.

Namely, Tyranno Valley.

Name: Deltamon
Level: Champion
Location: Amaterasu East - Kicking Forest (Cliff), Tyranno Valley

Drops: Wind Power 2

3 STR, 3 DEF, 3 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
3 FIRE, 2 WATER, 1 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 179, BIT: 360

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: None

Name: MetalTyrannomon
Level: Ultimate
Location: Amaterasu East - Wind Prairie, Kicking Forest (Cliff), Tyranno Valley

Drops: Metal Chip

3 STR, 5 DEF, 5 SPR, 1 WIS, 1 SPD,
3 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 1 THUNDER, 3 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 183, BIT: 400

Regular Attack: Machine Element
Technique: None

These guys aren't really that tough, and we've dealt with Deltamon before. MetalTyrannomon is still easier, given the absurd weakness to WIS and Thunder. Again, Renamon can one-shot them with her Techs.

Nothing else new here, either, but let me just say that I like this palette swap more than I like the Asuka version.

I'm forced to concur with that opinion. Tyranno Valley is one of the few good spots in this game.

Hey big guy! What's shakin'?

Yeti, pls. Y r u trying to have sex with a dinosaur.

BK Imperialdramon: You gotta fight me to go back!
Kite: Sure! I'll take you anytime!
BK Imperialdramon: You've got courage! I like you!
Kite: Hey, I got strength as well!
BK Imperialdramon: You've got lots of confidence! Great. This'll be a good match!

Hm. I could have sworn that conversation made sense when I was playing the game, but maybe that was just a fever dream.

The first sentence probably should have read "You gotta fight me OR go back."

I like the ending to the fight.

Name: BK Imperialdramon (Boss)
Location: Amaterasu East - Tyranno Valley

Drops: Hazard Helmet (After Defeat)

3 STR, 3 DEF, 2 SPR, 5 WIS, 2 SPD
2 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 4 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 4 DARK

EXP: 460, BIT: 930

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Mega Crusher (Physical-Fire?)

Stats are a ballpark because the bestiary I use doesn't have BK Imperialdramon, for whatever reason. I'm guessing based on the raw numbers (which don't really tell you that much.) Anyway, that 5 WIS is his highest stat, so for once Renamon isn't that useful.

Regular attack - nothing special. Just a shockwave.

Mega Crusher is a little dangerous, so be careful. I'm not sure if it's got the Fire element, or if it's just an explosion.

Hey, guess what?

I can do that too.

It's ALWAYS nice to use the same move as the boss.

Kite: Of course! I've been winning so far!
BK Imperialdramon: I see, you're great! Here, I'll give this to you. Take it.
Kite: Yeah! I got the Hazard Helmet!
BK Imperialdramon: That battle was fun. Come again sometime!

He says come again, but we cannot fight him again. drat.

Well, that was fun. Back to the land of trees and bloodwater.

Why does everyone look so sad in this screenshot? Did a Digimon drown? :v:

General rule of thumb, I think, is that anywhere an NPC used to be, or maybe a chest, will now hold a Trooper.

Trooper: Hey, you! Who are you?! You're suspicious. Let's Digimon Battle to see who you are!

Christ, that palette swap is atrocious.

(it's, uh, not a palette swap)
(it's just ugly)

GO AWAY, YOU'RE DISGUSTING

All of these are vulnerable to THUNDER. Just saying, is all.

Now that everything is cleared out in East Sector - that Trooper was the last fight - we can head off to South Sector and start wrecking poo poo there.

Or... or not. Nothing happens.

Thank gently caress we dont have to do this fetch quest again!

We have other ways of getting to South Sector, though.

By the by, we have new enemies in the Seabed.

Name: MarineDevimon
Level: Ultimate
Location: Seabeds 11, 14, 17

Drops: None

2 STR, 3 DEF, 2 SPR, 2 WIS, 4 SPD,
3 FIRE, 3 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 1 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 185, BIT: 370

Regular Attack: Water Element (Hits Twice)
Technique: None

The Seabed we're going through right now is Seabed 11, but MarineDevimon replaced Dolphmon as the most common enemy we'll be fighting. This is because the most useful Seabeds are this one (Kicking Forest -> Bulk Bridge) and Seabed 14 (Shell Beach -> Phoenix Bay). Seabed 17, for what it's worth, is the Seabed between Suzaku and the UG Lake.

You can tell we're in Bulk Bridge because of the bridge, obviously.

New sector means new enemies!

Good to see Digimon ripped off Mega Evolutions as well. :woop:
Name: MegaSeadramon
Level: Ultimate
Location: Amaterasu South - Bulk Bridge, Bulk Swamp, Bios Swamp, Tranquil Swamp, Jungle Grave

Drops: Thunder Chip

2 STR, 2 DEF, 4 SPR, 4 WIS, 3 SPD,
3 FIRE, 3 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 1 DARK

EXP: 174, BIT: 350

Regular Attack: Thunder Element
Technique: None

In-game model:
Name: Seadramon 2* (White Colored)
Level: Champion
Location: Amaterasu South - Bulk Swamp, Bulk Bridge, Tranquil Swamp, Bios Swamp, Jungle Grave

Drops: None

2 STR, 4 DEF, 5 SPR, 4 WIS, 2 SPD,
3 FIRE, 3 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 1 DARK

EXP: 175, BIT: 350

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Hard Rain (Magic-Water)

Eh, not too special. Neither of them should really be any trouble, this far in the game. Seadramon's Hard Rain can hit pretty hard, but we have plenty of heal battery right now since both Veemon and Monmon know Small Heal.

But before we go towards the town, we'll backtrack a screen to Bulk Swamp. Hi pal!

Trooper: Hey, you! Who are you?! You're suspicious. Let's Digimon Battle to see who you are!

This is literally the same dialouge from an earlier Trooper.

Nothing too dangerous.

I'm, uh, not sure if this is really an improvement on the color palette or not.

I mean, it's not puke brown, but it's also... kinda gross regardless.

Gonna go with a "No" on that question

Baronmon isn't in the Shaman Hut in Amaterasu - if we want to rename our 'mons, it has to be in Asuka Server. Guess who'll be walking back there eventually? :suicide:

Oh, come ON! That's so inconvenient.

Sepikmon: It's getting pretty quiet around here. It's all because the A.o.A took over the server.

Trooper: Hey, you! Who are you?! You're suspicious. Let's Digimon Battle to see who you are!

This is literally the same dialouge from an earlier Trooper.

At least these guys are good for EXP/DV grinding.

Giver, are we bad enough dudes to rescue the president?

No. Because he's gone, so.

Back in Bulk Bridge, there's another trooper where Paildramon was hanging out back in Asuka.

Trooper: You're suspicious. Let's Digimon Battle to see who you are!

This is literally the same dialouge from an earlier Trooper.

This rear end in a top hat. I hate Clockmon with a passion. Do you know how long it took to get the stupid Multi Crests?

Took up too much of your time? Hyuck yuck yuck.

The Bios Swamp is only notable in that apparently nobody bombed open the shrine. Either the A.o.A took over before that could happen, or there actually was a better way of getting the Digi-Egg of Reliability.

Jungle Grave in the light area has no new encounters, just more of the MegaSeadramon and white Seadramon.

The dark ground has a few new boys, though.

In-game model:
Name: Phantomon 2* (Blue Color)
Level: Ultimate
Location: Amaterasu South - Jungle Grave

Drops: HP Chip

4 STR, 5 DEF, 3 SPR, 1 WIS, 4 SPD,
1 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 1 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 186, BIT: 370

Regular Attack: Dark Element
Technique: None

Name: Vilemon
Level: Champion
Location: Amaterasu South - Jungle Grave

Drops: Devil Chip

3 STR, 2 DEF, 4 SPR, 3 WIS, 4 SPD,
1 FIRE, 2 WATER, 3 ICE, 1 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 180, BIT: 360

Regular Attack: Fire Element
Technique: Dark Fear (Magic-Dark)

Fire and Wind, FIRE AND WIND. Apparently those two Techs destroy everything in Amaterasu.

Strangely enough, there's nothing interesting going on through all of Phoenix Bay. No Troopers, nothing.

There are new enemies, though.

Wow, more? I take back some of the things I said last update. This game wasn't that lazy with this section, after all. Still, you're forced to travel to everywhere you've been, so eh.

In-game model:
Name: Blossomon 2* (Pink Colored)
Level: Ultimate
Location: Amaterasu South - Phoenix Bay, Ether Jungle

Drops: None

3 STR, 3 DEF, 3 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
1 FIRE, 3 WATER, 2 ICE, 3 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 1 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 179, BIT: 360

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: None

(Picture is poor quality because there's no actual official art - that's from the Digimon card.)
Name: Brachiomon
Location: Amaterasu South - Phoenix Bay, Ether Jungle

Drops: Ultra Charge

3 STR, 2 DEF, 4 SPR, 4 WIS, 2 SPD,
2 FIRE, 3 WATER, 1 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 180, BIT: 360

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: None

In-game model:
Name: Tortomon 2* (Purple Colored)
Level: Champion
Location: Amaterasu South - Phoenix Bay, South Cape

Drops: None

3 STR, 4 DEF, 4 SPR, 3 WIS, 2 SPD,
3 FIRE, 3 WATER, 1 ICE, 2 WIND, 1 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 180, BIT: 360

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Hard Rain (Magic-Water)

Tortomon's recolor actually looks pretty neat. In order of how to handle the 'mons: Fire, punch it, Ice.

Finally, some action.

Trooper: ...is that the Blue ID Pass?!

...yes?

Trooper: I-I'm sorry. I didn't know you were Qing Long Chief!
Kite: !!! ...what?! Uh, ah, yeah! That uniform is too obvious. I'm in disguise and on patrol! Let's keep this a secret between the two of us, OK?
Trooper: You're great, Chief! You're a hard worker!

WHAT! WHAT IS THIS EXCHANGE.

Kite: Phew, that was close... But now I can go into Zhu Que City.

GAME NO. IT'S JUST AN ID CARD. IT SHOULDN'T---QWJDHCQUWECJQNWE

Trooper: I'll continue scouting!

Dude, you're just staring at the sign. That's not scouting.

Not even Zhu Que City was spared the indignity of the A.o.A theme.

Trooper: Let's Digimon Battle to see who you are!

That's literally the- OK, at least this guy recognized us. So, what about the earlier A.o.A troops then?

What the gently caress?

I laughed.

We're just gonna move on and pretend we didn't see that, mmkay?

RETARD. SOUND THE ALARM. You just identified a suspicious individual. WHAT ARE YOU DOING.

Trooper: You're that tamer! Prepare yourself!

loving FINALLY. Someone recognized us.

Yeah, and it only took us getting inside instead of at the gate.

What killed the dinosaurs?

This.

I take the chance to upgrade everyone's equipment, since I have the money to burn. I know we just got another upgrade the last update, but we're moving fast - I'm at a comfortable level where I can handle the random trash mobs no sweat, but the Tamers might give me some trouble. Regardless of all that, Monmon gets a Psycho Blaster (just a +20 to power) and Veemon gets our first upgrade to the Zweihander, the Flamberge. It's another +60 power, because Veemon wasn't broken enough yet. I think he's actually broken 900 Power.

The pig behind us has nothing of interest, despite Monmon's insistence, so let's just chat with the Zhu Que Leader. Surely this will be resolved smoothly and without incident.

Zhu Que Chief: Only the members of the A.o.A can enter here!
Kite: Zhu Que Chief, where is the Digi-Egg of Knowledge?
Zhu Que Chief: Ha ha ha, so you're responsible for the Asuka Server! But no matter how hard you try, it's too late!
Kite: What? What do you mean by that!
Zhu Que Chief: Ha ha ha, I'll tell you! We succeeded in taking the undersea Base Magasta! And now we are launching the mobile fort Juggernaut!

I mean, they're capitalized, so probably they're important, but I have no idea why I should care.

Business as usual with this stupid-rear end story. Throw poo poo at the audience and pretend like nothing needs to make sense.

Video game writing at its finest.

Kite: Yeah, right! I'm not going to let you! I'll stop the launch of the Juggernaut!
Zhu Que Chief: Ha ha ha... Go ahead and try! That's if you can get by me first!

South Sector, round 2, fight!

Alright, first off we have Cherrymon vs. MetalGreymon. Fire is painful for the tree.

Next up is WarGrowlmon vs. Scorpiomon. Unfortunately, Scorpiomon is weak to Renamon's Techs but has a 4 in WIS, so it evens out. Still, I win in the end thanks to a full Blast Gauge to start with.

Finally, we have Snimon vs. MagnaAngemon; normally, this is where I'd go over the Signature Digimon, but we've already seen Snimon's bio.

Kite: Huh?! There's something on the ground again... Yeah! I got the Red ID Pass! ...But where is the Digi-Egg of Knowledge? I've got to find it fast to stop the Juggernaut!

Well, that was eventful.

Next time, we'll finish off South Sector and go West, young Digimon.

I'll leave you all with this:

Happy Halloween!

I don't know if this update counts as a trick or as a treat, but Happy Halloween!

LOWTAX'S SPINE FUND

I find it funny that Gargoylemon, V-mon's Armour Evolution through the Digimental of Light, is given a Dark move here. One that has its element in its name, even.

Talking about names, the correct name for that black Digimon is BlackSaintGalgomon originally (from two breeds of dogs, the Saint Bernard and the Galgo Espaņol, and well, black). Dub-wise, it should be BlackMegaGargomon (because we can't have religious words in our children anime, even if they have zero to do with religion...and Engrish), which is understandably reduced to BKMegaGargomon for space...but as shown, this game isn't too sure what the second word there is meant to mean. I guess it got confused with another Digimon whose name was changed for religious reasons, HolyAngemon to MagnaAngemon.

And on the topic of name changes, Imperialdramon's ultimate move was originally Mega Death, changed for obvious reasons. It also wasn't the attack shown here at all, that's Imperialdramon's better-known Positron Laser. I have no idea why they used the wrong move here, even moreso since its description is actually correct, but Mega Death is seen a lot in 02 - Imperialdramon performs it in its evolution scene, destroying an ever-increasing number of castles with it. It's also...really, really rarely used outside of it. I think it was used like once, and then again in Hunters.
Also using Imperialdramon against Imperialdramon was very stylish.

Unrelated, I like how Jyureimon/Cherrymon's colour change makes sense. While others seem to just have a random palette, it goes from Summer to Autumn colours. It's nice, they should add a Wint...

...actually, let's not do that.

Look at this smug broken asshole.
Special behind-the-scenes LP knowledge time!

I have a few cheat codes for this game, mainly revolving around exp manipulation for quick grinding - I used them to get the new partners up to speed after the vote. They work by manipulating the reward data slot that every fight in the game links to; each fight, whether solo or Tamer, has a related value that dictates the 'number' of the fight. Now, the address 042738 takes that value and looks it up in a reward data table and then gives us whatever number of EXP/Bits the table says. How the codes work is they basically hijack that data address and use whatever value I give it. Using that, I can fight a Kunemon and the game thinks I just beat some Digimon from Amaterasu Server worth 185 EXP. The DV values are also included in that reward data table, which lets me customize the fight reward so that every battle gives me a Skill Level Up while simultaneously being the lowest amount of EXP, granting me more Skill Levels per actual Rookie level.

More importantly, and actually relevant to the post, are the other two I use, Encounter Every Step and No Encounters. Both work by manipulating the game's random battle counter, the thing that dictates how many steps I have to take before I can get into another random battle. It's essentially a random number between two arbitrary X and Y values. Those X and Y values can change in a few ways; running from encounters, for example, lowers the X and Y, giving us an overall higher encounter rate. The Encounter Every Step code works by setting the two addresses in question, 048518 and 04851A (You'll notice that these are two consecutive 16-bit values) to 0; the No Encounter code works by doing the opposite and setting them to high values - so in reality it's not a 'no encounter' code, just a 'very, very unlikely to have an encounter' code.

When I exited Protocol Forest and was heading to Tyranno Valley to fight Imperialdramon, Veemon had a very full Blast Gauge, to the point that one hit from anything would Blast Digivolve him. Problem was, he was a bit behind on levels and I didn't want the others to pull ahead, since they level up so much faster than Veemon does. So, I just turned off encounters and walked there :v:

It was a hell of a lot faster that way.

The Digimental of Light is goofy in terms of Digivolution theme as its armor stages are a gargoyle, harpy, sea horse, mola, sphinx, and an amphiptere. About the only thing tying these Digimon together is the fact that all of them are tied to some form of mythology.

You joke but keep in mind that this was around the time that Pokémon was being attacked by fundamentalists as satanic so Bandai wanting to avoid them raising Hell is rather understandable and in fact Devimon, Daemon, Cherubimon, and Seraphimon were named Darkmon, Creepymon, Kerpymon, and Seraphymon in various American material.

Now Galgomon being translated as Gargomon was an honest mistake do to l and r using the same character in Japanese, and rather problematic since Gargoylemon's Japanese name is Gargomon as well especially so since Galgomon was supposedly spelled as Gargomon in Japanese material, that was simply carried over.

Missed talking about it when it was relevant, but if you go back to the previous update, notice the discrepancy between Monmon and Veemon's EXP values. Yeah, the EXP curve is pretty messed up if you're one of the Slow Growing 'mons. It starts off fairly tame but it gets pretty annoying quickly.

It takes a gently caress ton of grinding to hit the natural megas.

You can entirely beat the game having 1 or 2 natural megas if you just do the work to scrape by.

Some of the experience tricks are fishing for things past your level hitting their weakness until you train enough in gym to whomp them,

chasing after rare colored numemon otherwise it's just somehow get to the 60-100k necessary.

And digivolutions go up max 1 level per battle.

This game gives dragon quest 8's grinding curves a run for its money, but its not a horrible game, it just has silly flaws especially for a game targeted towards children that was 20 bucks on release and released during the ps2 cycle.

Update 18: Seabed 2.0

So, I, uh, don't remember where we're going.

Our LPer, everybody.

Music is still the A.o.A theme. Bleh

Oh, hey, that clears it up! Thanks, game.

(I love this loving sign :allears: )

(Hahahaha, a moment of character for this game.)

Anyway, Ether Jungle doesn't actually have any new Digimon for us to fight; it's the same encounter set as in Phoenix Bay. Still, I like the color palette.

The Jungle Shrine? Not so much. It feels like they just slapped a dim lighting filter over it and called it a day.

Trooper: Does that make me a bad trooper?

Yes.

Amazing. That was the one intelligent trooper in all of Amaterasu Server - he didn't fight us.

Or incompetent?

Jungle Shrine has one new encounter:

In-game model:

Name: Numemon 3* (Brown Color)
Level: Champion
Location: Amaterasu South - Jungle Shrine

Drops: Training Book

3 STR, 4 DEF, 2 SPR, 2 WIS, 4 SPD,
2 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 299, BIT: 770

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: None

Note: Can Run Away

This guy is actually pretty important, for one reason: that Training Book. It actually increases the rate of success of training (though not the gains from training, more's the pity) which on average ends up raising the gains. In the end, it's a rare-enough drop that it would take a while of grinding to get them, but WarGrowlmon's Picking Claw lets me speed that up a bit. Good news.

Hooray? This is pointless vendor trash, even if I didn't have heal batteries as part of my team.

Deeper we go, into the Catacombs, which has only one encounter.

Name: SkullSatamon
Level: Ultimate (I don't know? I think it's an Ultimate, but a few places have it listed as Mega)
Location: Amaterasu South - Catacombs

Drops: Hack Sticker

3 STR, 3 DEF, 4 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
1 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 1 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 196, BIT: 390

Regular Attack: Dark Element
Technique: None

This guy is pretty nasty, since Dark Element is one of the harder-to-get Resistances without training it. He's worth the time, though, since Hack Sticker makes it easier to steal, which can be immediately used on those Numemon upstairs.

Still, we fought Zanbamon in this place, so there's a Black Digimon taking its place here.

BKSeraphimon: You've come to this divine place, now pay the price.
Kite: What do you mean by that?
BK Seraphimon: It means, you will fight with me! If you win, I will let you go... But if you lose, this is the end!
Kite: OK, I get it. Then let's do this!
BK Seraphimon: You will not be saying that for long! You had better prepare yourself.

Y'know, it's really irritating how they go to all this trouble to have snappy one-liners to start the battle, and then keep talking after they deliver the line.

You gotta make use of that sprite however much you can? :confuoot:

Yeah, sure, boss fight, whatever

(BK Seraphimon is unique to Digimon World 3, so no official art, unfortunately)

Name: BK Seraphimon (Boss)
Level: Mega
Location: Amaterasu South - Catacomb Back Entrance

Drops: Sniper Suit (After Defeat)

2 STR, 3 DEF, 4 SPR, 5 WIS, 3 SPD,
2 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 1 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 470, BIT: 960,

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Giga Heal (Heal Much HP), Seven Heavens (Physical)

This guy's not really all that threatening, so long as you use physical attacks against him. That 4 SPR might look scary, but Seven Heavens is a physical-based attack, and so he really doesn't do much damage. To further reduce his threat, I started off with WarGrowlmon and used Str Up and Def Up to boost my stats a bit.

So he specializes in one stat...and doesn't use it? BOOO

His regular attack is just a shockwave.

Seven Heavens is almost impressive, but doesn't do much damage, like I've said.

Good name, passable animation, poo poo damage. I give it a thumbs down.

Like all the bosses, though, BK Seraphimon falls pretty easily.

BK Seraphimon: I was testing your courage...
Kite: Yeah! I won't lose to anyone in that category!
BK Seraphimon: That's the spirit! You have passed. I'll give you this as a proof!
Kite: Yeah! I got the Sniper Suit!
BK Seraphimon: The pass will be revealed by courage. Do not give up to any enemy and endure!

I'm not sure how equipment is a pass, but sure, whatever. Sniper Suit is a Monmon-exclusive armor.

"The pass will be revealed by courage." That we just proved?

I guess this is what Bulbmon destroyed in Asuka Server. Any goons know what the mural says?

Now, I was gonna keep going to South Cape, hit up the gym and stuff like that...

...but plans changed because gently caress yeah this team just got its first Mega :hellyeah:

That being said, I won't actually be using WarGreymon right away. MetalGreymon gives me access to pretty powerful Fire techs, and since I won't be grinding WarGreymon up immediately, I don't want to lose them. Instead, I'm swapping Paildramon out for MetalMamemon.

While I was getting my Digivolutions shuffled around in town, I remembered that there was one more place for us to explore in South Sector. Remember that chest in the UG Lake? It's probably back.

The only enemy in this passageway is MarineDevimon, and the only one that has problems dealing with him is Veemon.

Why does every seabed everywhere have only one encounter. Why.

Not even the Zhu Que UG Lake is free from the A.o.A theme.

Of course, there is one new enemy in here:

In-game model:

Name: ShogunGekomon 2* (Blue Colored)
Level: Ultimate
Location: Amaterasu South - Zhu Que UG Lake

Drops: Chaos Wave

3 STR, 3 DEF, 5 SPR, 5 WIS, 3 SPD,
2 FIRE, 3 WATER, 1 ICE, 2 WIND, 1 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 184, BIT: 370

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Confuse Nebula (Magic, Chance of Confusion)

No different than its red counterpart in Asuka Server.

Hey, neat. Evil Fang is a claw weapon, so none of our Digimon can use it, but it'll be useful if I switch out for Kumamon or Guilmon.

...What.

WHAT?! I literally stumbled into this by loving accident. Like, I thought it would be in West Sector.

Kite: Hey, what do we have here? ...Yeah! I got the Digi-Egg of Knowledge! Now I can summon Digmon! OK, let's go back to Asuka Server and go to North Sector!

YAAAAAAY PROGRESS! HOORAY FOR EXPLORATION.

...I'm sorry, I'm still in shock I accidentally found the way to progress. Normally, we have to do some weird bullshit sidequest, but NOPE just accidentally stumble into the goal.

Anyway, that's besides the point. Y'know these holes that I've been showing all game? The ones Giver's slowly been going insane over?

They're our Dig points.

Kite used Dig!

Welcome to the Circuit Boards. These things are hell. But at least the music is different.

Patamon: Use Plug Cape tunnel to get to North Sector!

Well, at least they give us our next destination.

There are occasionally blocks in our way, but they're just an extra two seconds of 'Press A and Digmon smashes them'. No minigame, no guaranteed fight, just respawning blocks that are there solely to annoy us.

...But why?

As for the reason why I hate the Circuit Boards so much already?

Here we are. See this image? See how it looks like the one immediately above it? It's not. The Circuit Boards are basically large, sprawling mazes with labyrinthine structures and no defining scenery. Digmon moves slowly, though not as bad as Submarimon, and I get lost like two screens in.

To make it worse, the enemies are unanimously a pain to fight:

In-game model:

Name: Drimogemon 2* (Gray Colored)
Level: Champion
Location: Circuit Boards - 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 11, 13, 18, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30

There are HOW MANY areas? :tizzy:

Drops: None

4 STR, 3 DEF, 2 SPR, 2 WIS, 3 SPD,
2 FIRE, 1 WATER, 3 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 3 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 220, BIT: 500

Regular Attack: Machine Element
Technique: None

Oh, you look cool. :allears:
In-game model:
Name: Kurisarimon 2* (Red Colored)
Level: Champion
Location: Boards 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 27, 30
no gently caress this. this is too many areas that look identical.

Drops: None

3 STR, 4 DEF, 3 SPR, 4 WIS, 3 SPD,
2 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 1 WIND, 3 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 250, BIT: 800

Regular Attack: None?
Technique: Confuse Nebula (Magic)

In-game model:
Name: Raremon 2* (Pink Color)
Level: Champion
Location: - Boards 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 27, 30
No, enough. plz

Drops: Bolt Power 2

3 STR, 5 DEF, 3 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
2 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 1 WIND, 1 THUNDER, 3 MACHINE, 3 DARK

EXP: 201, BIT: 400

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Magical Cannon (Magic-Machine)

Name: Rockmon (Real name Golemon)
Level: Champion
Location: Boards 03, 04, 05, 06, 08, 09, 11, 13, 18, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30

So much effort into making this game tedious. :negative:

Drops: None

3 STR, 4 DEF, 3 SPR, 3 WIS, 2 SPD,
2 FIRE, 1 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 3 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 220, BIT: 400

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Double Guard (Raises Defense)

So, basically every single one of these jerks has super high defenses, except Drimogemon. To make things worse, Kurisarimon literally only ever uses Confuse Nebula, which has a REALLY high chance of confusing your Digimon. It's just so obnoxious that the fights turn into time wasters every time we get into a battle here.

Agumon: This tunnel is connected to Amaterasu Server.

There'll sometimes be a Digimon in the Circuit Boards, giving us directions to one or more of the exits. This one's not too useful, since we came from the north.

Anyway, since the Circuit Board maps all look the same, I've just gone ahead and skipped over it. Otherwise, it'd be a series of unrelated images, just showing me in a different map every time. If you must, imagine Digmon wandering around the area for about 50 minutes, getting into fights every ten steps or so.

:suicide: personified

It is, I guess, convenient that we have ways to and from the different Servers that aren't part of going through the Bug Maze. This particular Circuit Board is Circuit Board 04 - of 30, by the way :suicide: - which has entrances in Asuka Server Ether Jungle, Amaterasu Server Ether Jungle, and Asuka Server N Badland West.

Pretty much the only reason to take Circuit Boards, barring the occasional area that can't be reached on foot, is that each of them usually has one and only one treasure chest in them. They're pretty good stuff, too, like the Wisdom Chip that I got and am still hoarding.

The other reason is that they're not terrible shortcuts.

Patamon: Use Plug Cape tunnel to get to North Sector!

For example, this Circuit Board (Circuit Board 01) has exits in the Central Park, Wind Prairie, S Noise Desert, and Ether Jungle. Normally, to reach Central Park I'd have to go from Ether Jungle all the way to East Sector, then to Central Sector (assuming I didn't use one of the Seabed shortcuts, of course).

It's another twenty minutes of wandering around, getting lost, and finding every exit except the one I was looking for. There's not even a treasure chest to make things better.

Tedium World 3 -- I vote this is the new update title

Have I mentioned I hate the Circuit Boards?

There are a few Circuit Boards I don't hate, though. This one's one of them.

This is mainly because there's literally one entrance, one treasure chest, and no branches. It's amazing.

This hole is another tolerable Circuit Board.

Regardless of how much I dislike the stupid things, though, we need to go through this one. Remember, all the Digimon were telling us we needed to go down this area.

Ughhhhhhhhh

And they all look the same, right?

(None of those treasure chest images are this Board, by the way, Giver's just trolling)

This is what I meant by areas we couldn't reach by foot, by the way. We'll find a few more of these here and there, but by and large the Circuit Boards are just large branching areas that lead you to different sectors and servers.

Different...servers? More Sector Leaders in different servers?

:allbuttons:

Irritatingly enough, these things were already for sale. I think Renamon's wearing one, even. So this entire side path was pointless.

Anyway, every Digimon in Circuit Board 02 (where we are) is telling us 'Go North, young Digimon' and here we are.

We finally made it!

...And it's brown. Of course it's brown. I don't know why I was imagining a snowy area. Because that would be white and not brown.

I hate this game, Giver. I really, really do.

A Digimon named BlackSeraphimon would appear later on in Digimon Frontier, but it should be noted that it has basically nothing to do with the BlackSeraphimon here. They have the same colour scheme of green-on-grey (although with different shades), but DW3's is a straight recolour of Seraphimon (up to using the same special move) while Frontier's is a more demonic version: switching the cross on its helmet so it is now an X, demonic wings, pointed shoes and Mercuremon's smiles on its armour. Its special move also changes to Seven Hells.

Also if they were going to put a Drimogemon recolour they should've used the much superior NiseDrimogemon.

Just look at that moustache. Beautiful.

Update 19: The Frozen North

gently caress yeah, we finally made it to the North Sector, after having to take a detour that shouldn't exist.

You mean several. Lest we forget the random rear end detours ON our detour to another server!

Click for ambience

Thankfully, North Sector doesn't seem to be infested by the A.o.A theme, which is a mixed blessing. I mean, on one hand I don't have to listen to that stupid song anymore, but on the other this ambience ain't stellar.

After so much A.o.A. we forgot that there are legitimate players still playing in the North Sector who have 0 idea what's going on.

North Sector seems a bit drier than I expected. I'm not entirely sure why I expected a snowy sector, but Volcano biome is like... the exact opposite.

Going up the stairs, we immediately have to deal with a Tamer.

Tamer Haruka: Ah ha ha ha! I am the best female tamer! No one in this server can defeat me!

(Unfortunately, we can't prove her wrong because she won't fight us. I think my team's Charisma is too low.)

(Yeti, pls. You should have started with more Charisma perks. Tell the DM to change it!)

Up the ramp, we come to a split in the path.

Before we keep going, now's a good time to go over the new Digimon in Boot Mountain.

Name: Flarerizamon
Level: Champion
Location: Asuka North - Boot Mountain, Fire Dungeon

Drops: Fire Power 2

2 STR, 3 DEF, 5 SPR, 3 WIS, 4 SPD,
3 FIRE, 1 WATER, 3 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 204, BIT: 400

Regular Attack: Fire Element
Technique: Flame Ball (Magic-Fire)

Note: Can Run Away

Name: Meramon
Level: Champion
Location: Asuka North - Boot Mountain

Drops: None

1 STR, 4 DEF, 5 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
3 FIRE, 1 WATER, 3 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 205, BIT: 410

Regular Attack: Fire Element
Technique: Flame Lance (Magic-Fire)

In-game model:

Name: Triceramon 2* (Red Colored)
Level: Ultimate
Location: Asuka East - Wind Prairie
Asuka North - Boot Mountain, Kulon Mine

Drops: None

4 STR, 3 DEF, 3 SPR, 3 WIS, 2 SPD,
3 FIRE, 2 WATER, 1 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 205, BIT: 400

Regular Attack: Fire Element
Technique: None

All of these guys are pretty weak, all things considered. Flarerizamon and Meramon are weak to Water, and Triceramon 2.0 is the same as every other Dinosaur Digimon we've encountered. Flarerizamon can be a bit dangerous if it spams Flame Ball, but it's not that hard even so.

The southern branch leads to a hole.

Nooooo!

The thing about the Circuit Boards is that they only have like four different screen arrangements, and the way the developers made the Circuit Boards themselves is just throwing them together in new ways each time. Might not actually even be new ways. Anyway, this particular Circuit Board, Circuit Board 12, doesn't even have a chest so I don't know why I spent 30 minutes on it :suicide:

This is a valuable lesson in making sure that there's always something to find during Exploration. If a player explores and doesn't find anything -- not even an acknowledgement of them exploring -- then the results can be disastrous.

The western branch leads to a new area, but we're not going there right now. Mainly because Veemon and Monmon have been healing my fighters after every battle and I haven't stayed at an inn since before finding the Digi-Egg of Knowledge, so they're running super low on MP right now.

If we hop down, we find a hole and a chest that contains a Power Charge. That hole leads to Circuit Board 22 and gently caress that poo poo.

EXPLORE. THERE COULD BE TREASURE.

gently caress THAT poo poo

Finally, the eastern branch is where we want to go to progress.

Oh wow, a spike ball.

Another loving hole. This one leads to Circuit Board 5, I think, and I don't want to deal with holes that lead to multiple places like this one. It's just asking to get lost. As for the more important information, the Needle Gloves are weapons for Kumamon (i.e. useless). If we keep going and follow that ramp to the left of the screenshot, it'll loop back to the western branch and so we don't need to go that way just yet.

Huh? What's this?

Hell yeah, this is what I wanted! Snowy area, some icicles, perfect! Also, the predominant color isn't brown, so it's even better!

Oh hell yeah, he was my BOY in Digimon World 2
Name: Frigimon

Location: Asuka North - Snow Mountain, Freeze Mountain

Kicking Trees: Asuka North - Lake of Ice, Snow Mountain

Drops: Ice Chip

4 STR, 4 DEF, 3 SPR, 3 WIS, 2 SPD,
1 FIRE, 2 WATER, 3 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 206, BIT: 420

Regular Attack: Ice Element
Technique: None

Name: Mojyamon
Level: Champion
Location: Asuka North - Snow Mountain, Freeze Mountain

Drops: None

3 STR, 3 DEF, 5 SPR, 3 WIS, 3 SPD,
1 FIRE, 2 WATER, 3 ICE, 3 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 1 DARK

EXP: 205, BIT: 420

Regular Attack: No Element
Technique: Ice Blow (Magic-Ice)

Both of these two have a weakness to Fire Techs, which is Veemon's main export. They don't last long.

Looping around nets us a nice warchest.

...I'll be back for you later, after Veemon has more than 80 MP remaining.

So much optional exploration. You're gonna need a whole update just to clean that up.

We could keep going north to a new screen, but it's more important we hop down.

Not for Tamer Poemy, who also refuses to battle me, but because of the little log cabin right behind us.

It's an inn :toot:

WE'RE RICH

Ah, much better. Now everyone can heal like they're supposed to. Side note in regards to healing: while I was running around in the Circuit Boards, lost as usual, Monmon got the MagnaAngemon Digivolution leveled high enough to unlock Mega Heal, which is about six times as expensive as Small Heal and heals more than three times our max HP, so it's completely useless.

Math!

If we head up that ramp right in front of us, we come to a chest that has a Shamshir inside. I'm pretty sure it's a weapon, but I'm equally pretty sure it's already outclassed by our two-handed weapons.

There's also this ladder that leads to nowhere. It looks like there might be an NPC here later, but I have no idea.

Back on the main path, there's...

YOU LITTLE BITCH

Back on the main path, where we don't ever run into holes ever, there's another fork. Fortunately, the right path leads to literally nothing, so left we go.

By hopping down to the inn, we had to leave the level that led to progression. Fortunately, this exit leads back to Boot Mountain, and that Circuit Board I explored.

Right, so the only reason I'm going in this one is because it has no other exits, just this one.

It doesn't stop me from getting lost, of course, and I don't even remember if I found a treasure chest or just gave up and left.

Right, that was pointless.

Just like this franchise

Click for ambience

Freeze Mountain has no new encounters, but it does have new music.

Oh, cool. Proper ambience this time.

If we head up that ramp then down the other one, it leads here.

There's nothing here at all nope nothing (this one actually connects to the Circuit Board we explored at the beginning, the one in Boot Mountain)

You should go inside it.

Back at the first ramp, there's actually a path off to the right that's hidden a little bit by the foreground. Now, game, I'm not asking for much, but I've had enough of this poo poo back in Protocol Forest, so cut it out.

Yeah, that's amateur-ish. Game pls.

The Knights Shield is a shield and therefore not good.

That's equipment-ist.

If we go down that other ladder, it leads here. I know I'm not saying much of interest, but there's not much to talk about. It's a single path, with no new enemies, and no goodies. I can only milk my hatred for Circuit Boards so long, too.

Well, that's why Giver's here. So that I can make fun of him.

Joke's on you rear end in a top hat. All your insults bounce off me.

Tamer Shingo won't make things interesting, because he refuses to fight me. He only wants to duel, and gently caress that.

YAY MORE CIRCUIT BOARDS!

i can't take it anymore i have to jump

Why are they still giving me Power Charges this late in the game? At least, I'm assuming we're at least 70% through the game. We've cleared out 5 Sector Leaders, and I'm hoping we don't have to go to Servers other than Asuka and Amaterasu, so we can't have much further to go.

Inb4 there's a 3rd server

Finally.

Neat. I like the aesthetic.

There aren't even any random battles. Just a straight shot to the door.

After a brief stop at the Armory, Renamon has a new hat that ups her Spirit a little bit. I'll take gains where I can get them.

That sentence made it sound like she's sad.

Opposite the Armory is the Inn and save point. There's also a chest taunting me, just out of reach. :argh:

Go find the secret entrance, you gently caress. That's where it has to be.

Moving right along, there's another branch a little bit ahead. The right branch has Pixiemon, and I'm stopping by.

After raising MetalMamemon to level 40, MetalGarurumon is unlocked for our battling pleasure. I'm equipping this one.

No poo poo.

Grandpa Tor: You're exceptional for your age.

I'd just like to point out that A) that DO Guard said 'even the A.o.A isn't here', which implies that nobody else is either, B) this guy IS here, meaning he has the Digi-Egg of Knowledge, which implies the loving things are spawned on a per-player basis, and C) HOW THE HELL DID HE GET ONE IF THEY'RE ONLY IN AMATERASU.

...Yeah, that's a pretty big flaw. But wait, the things are possible spawned per-player?

WHAT THE poo poo WERE THE DEVELOPERS SMOKING :tizzy:

So you have to go to a different server that's populated with bad guys who will turn you into a pig, and each player's Digi-Egg is in a different place...so it can be anywhere in that giant massive gently caress-off server. What are the odds it spawns for someone in Amaterasu's North Sector? Guess what, you're boned.

This loving MMO game has 0 sense of proper questing.

DO Guard: We all love him!

Alright, cool.

Stepping outside, we're back on the gun ramparts.

Guilmon: Genbu Leader is the one above here! He's the best of all the City Leaders!

Eh, we'll just bring Fire-types.

Renamon: Good tamers always fight with everything they've got!

If we head through the B door right behind us, we can get this chest that was taunting us earlier. Who's laughing now, chest! It's me! I'm laughing!

I told you all we needed was the secret entrance.

I just realized this image makes it look like Kite jumped halfway up the ladder. Kid's got skills :v:

's got mad ladder hopping skills, yo. Gonna dunk on some bitches.

Up the next ladder, and right next to some fuckhuge missiles, is the Genbu Leader.

So much phallic imagery.

Kite: Genbu Leader, I've got a favor to ask! Can I have your badge to get to the Real World?
Genbu Leader: Sorry, no matter what, I can't give the badge for free. Those are the rules. If you want it you have to win against me!
Kite: Oh, all right. I knew you were gonna say that! Let's get this over with!

I'm not sure what's the best about that conversation: the fact that Kite's totally over this poo poo by now, or that he actually tried to just ask for the loving badge in the first place. Talking: it might actually solve problems occasionally.

At least we can see that this situation is changing him.

So yeah, let's just get this over with.

First up: MagnaAngemon vs. Vikemon.

Vikemon is dangerous because it's got about... a 60% chance of countering a physical attack? It's pretty common, even if it doesn't do much damage.

A free Counter and a physical attack that hit Yeti for 4-digit damage. We got a challenge on our hands. :ducksiren:

That being said, Vikemon is still dangerous. Good news: Monmon had a pretty high Blast Gauge at the start of the fight, so I got the blast off.

Better news: Once the Rookie reached level 39, they Blast to the Mega+ Digimon (I don't know? It's not the natural Mega). Monmon happens to become BlackWarGreymon, who has the Signature Tech Terra Destroyer. It's Dark-element and Vikemon has a Dark weakness.

Get rekt, nerd

Second fight: WarGrowlmon vs. MetalEtemon.

MetalEtemon is less threatening than Vikemon. So much so that I just spend a few turns using my stat-boosting Techs to set up for the third fight.

Also, it was mainly to burn time so that Renamon could Blast as well.

I wonder if I should be concerned that all of my Digimon are apparently super evil. ...Nah.

Evil will triumph because good is dumb

Final fight: Antylamon vs. MetalGarurumon.

This one is, sadly enough, the most boring. Just spamming Fire Techs until Antylamon falls over dead.

Genbu Leader: Kite, I apologize for making you fight. I wanted to see for myself that you can really fight against the A.o.A!
Kite: Oh, I see...
Genbu Leader: Now take this and stop the A.o.A's plans!
Kite: Yeah! I got the Genbu Badge!
Genbu Leader: I think you're strong enough to fight on. But they too are strong, so keep your guard up!
Kite: Thanks, Genbu Leader!

Well, that was easy enough.

Why can't he call the real world again? I mean, he's a Sector Leader, so he might have the prestige to raise the alarm? Ah, gently caress it.

Let's just cut out all the backtracking, mmkay? We've seen this poo poo already.

Kulon Mine is kinda important, but not right now; we're just cutting through.

There are new enemies to fight, though.

Name: Drimogemon
Level: Champion
Location: Asuka North - Kulon Mine
Circuit Boards - 02, 05, 06, 07, 10, 12, 19, 21, 22

Drops: Drill Horn

4 STR, 3 DEF, 2 SPR, 2 WIS, 3 SPD,
2 FIRE, 1 WATER, 3 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 3 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 205, BIT: 450

Regular Attack: Machine Element
Technique: None

Name: Fugamon
Location: Asuka North - Kulon Mine, Kulon Pit

Drops: None

5 STR, 4 DEF, 2 SPR, 2 WIS, 3 SPD,
2 FIRE, 2 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 210, BIT: 430

Regular Attack: No element
Technique: None

Fugamon ostensibly exists, but I only ever fought Drimogemon. We've actually been fighting Drimogemon before, in the Circuit Boards, but since those don't exist this is the first time we've met them.

Circuit Boards? What are those?

Yeti go down the hooooO00leeeee

I'm getting an old-timey mining town vibe from this place, which makes sense given that it's a mine.

Up the ladder, we've got a person to talk to.

Tamer Brown: I'm all worn out just getting here. I'm still an active tamer though. Ho ho ho ho.

This guy will actually fight us! Oh frabjous day!

I'm calling PETA.

Nothing new. MagnaAngemon and Dino Buster kinda destroys them.

Who the gently caress is Kimmy?

Your mom.

Tamer Makoto: I'm going to be Server Champ! So can you duel with me and throw the fight?

Kid's got literally the exact same team as Tamer Brown. It'd be pretty hard to lose this fight unless you were actually trying.

I mean, the areas do look nice to traverse through. It's a just a shame that the encounter rate is so high?

This place is the entrance to Kulon Pit, but we're not interested in that right now.

Back up to Makoto, there's this ramp off to the side.

It also doesn't go anywhere.

That's not an entrance into some sort of mine judging by those tracks?

Nope. If you look really closely, we're on a ledge above the tracks.

This is where we want to be going. Also, what's up with the random railroad rollercoaster in the foreground?

The entrance leads to the Lake of Ice. But before we keep going through the area, we're gonna take a detour and head down that Seabed.

YETI YOU FOOL! NOOOOOOOOOOO

There's only one enemy in this place.

Name: Octomon
Level: Champion
Location: Seabeds 05, 06

Drops: None

3 STR, 3 DEF, 4 SPR, 4 WIS, 2 SPD,
3 FIRE, 3 WATER, 2 ICE, 2 WIND, 1 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 200, BIT: 400

Regular Attack: Water Element
Technique: None

This dingus. What's up with this guy. He looks silly.

This fuckin' chest, man. It's been staring at us ever since we first arrived here.

Will that be enough to let us fight at the chick at the start of the update?

Back in the Lake of Ice, we can loop around and start walking on ice. This is probably dangerous, given that the lake isn't entirely frozen over.

Guilmon: And it's slippery too.

(Don't listen to his lies, there's no ice physics, thank god.)

We need more ice physics. I want circuit boards with ice physics now.

Kimo from Hawaii: This place is too cold for me.

They legit mentioned a real-world place. Interesting.

The Lake of Ice has only one fight:

EW. WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM
Name: Icemon
Level: Champion
Location: Asuka North - Lake of Ice

Drops: Ice Power 2

3 STR, 4 DEF, 3 SPR, 2 WIS, 3 SPD,
1 FIRE, 2 WATER, 3 ICE, 2 WIND, 2 THUNDER, 2 MACHINE, 2 DARK

EXP: 215, BIT: 420

Regular Attack: Ice Element
Technique: None

Noble Sir Perrin: Let's enjoy this place more peacefully.

This thing looks pretty loving awesome. Not gonna lie.

Click for music

Hell yeah it should, because this is the Legendary Gym.

:chanpop: Let's GOOOOOO

No fights here, but there's some people to talk to.

Kazuya: I can't do anything by myself!

loving bitch-rear end.

Tamer Pierre is a smug shithead who won't battle us.

Of course, he's French.

Kumamon: I heard that it's in this direction!

This place is very vertical and very pretty. I like the environment, because it's a good use of color and different from the other 90% of the game.

Kotemon: Men, dou, kote! To be strong, your soul must be strong too. These are my ideal training grounds!

pretty ladder :swoon:

Raging Cecilia: Why can't he play Digimon Online by himself!

Yeah, I wouldn't want to play with someone called 'Raging' either. Just seems like a bad idea, like playing with some tool called 'killer' or some teenage emo poo poo like that.

Uh-huh, sure. Do tell how you've been promoted to the rank of General at such a young age, Yeti. Child prodigy, I bet?

Finally, we come to the bottom of the area and find Flamedramon.

Flamedramon: I'm going to train you hard, so get ready!

Check it out, we finally made it to the best gym in Asuka Server.

This is because of the Ultra Training Chance with any training with a star, or called Super [training name here]. The first three stat gains are, on average, lower...

But if you risk the fourth stat boost, you have a chance to get a boost that's three times as great as a normal one, instead of just two times. The failure rate is higher, though.

It's much, MUCH better than regular training, and that's the reason I've been super stingy with training at the other gyms.

So, be right back, just gonna train like the Digimon popped a bunch of steroids.

Unethical.

From what I could glean from the guides on GameFAQs, it doesn't seem like it. The Circuit Board has people for the Card Game, though.

Wait, have you been sitting on training points for the entire game until you got here?

Nah, the game caps at 99 TPs and I'm pretty sure any extra is wasted. That does seem like 11 levels worth of points on Veemon though.

From what I remember like 10 years ago, after you reach a certain level of charisma, a Black Agumon will spawn in one Circuit Board. You have to fight him or do a fetch quest for him, can't remember which (knowing this game, it's probably the latter). After that more Black Agumon/Numemons will appear on the Circuit Boards and you can duel them. They each posses one rare and very powerful card that they will give to you upon defeat. I'm pretty sure that the Circuit Board Yeti explored that lead nowhere is one of the Circuit Boards that hosts a Black Agumon/Numemon after you start the quest

tell him there are, and that they operate under battle network boss-rematch rules for encountering them

that should give us a couple more years of this lp
