It makes me laugh that stylistically a lot of the artists adore Miami, but I've not noticed any shows down this way. I haven't looked that hard mind, because getting to Miami is a loving pain in the rear end.

The first Synaptx/Protector 101/Dance with the Dead show I went to had an opening act where the doofus looking guy wearing shades yelled "BECOOOME A REEEENNEGADE" over and over while everyone chuckled wondering if it was for real. Miami is probably too busy sincerely listening to regaeton and bro house (which is probably an actual genre and I'm using it wrong). Plus nobody who lives in San Francisco actually has car chases. I mean have you DRIVEN in San Francisco? Takes an outsider to actually want to idolize Scarface

SgtScruffy posted:Is it me, or are the two options for seeing any sort of synthwave artist live to either live in Los Angeles, or to live in Europe? Some promoters I know that have brought acts out to Phoenix to play are working on setting up a bit of a collaborative touring circuit, something like Phoenix, LA, Portland and whatever in between as they are based out of these cities, the idea being they can split costs of bringing in a lot of the European acts and stuff stateside that doesn't really have the budget to tour, instead of a single club owner in one of these towns not being able to justify to costs of getting Gunship or whatever to fly out for single show. It could just be pie in the sky talk but I've seen them book shows with many of the acts mentioned in the thread so I hope they are able to put something together. We are also big believers that every town has these scenes in them as we speak but without a central venue or showcase to congregate around it's just a bunch of nerds living in their rooms all the time. I wouldn't expect something like a vaporwave scene to exist in any town what so ever before, but we did a few showcase nights at a club and I'd admit the turn out wasnt fantastic but there were artists (some quite good!) coming out of the woodwork to participate because in scenes that are kinda similar like these, so much of the fan base are also actively producing their own art to add to the scene. Synthwave went very much the same way, I was doing almost weekly DJ sets at the place, a lot of synth was getting played and after a few months of having it consistently, the nights we were not doing synth we would always get one or two complaints/requests "why arent you guys doing any synth tonight?/Hey can someone throw on some com truise next?" Although no synthwave scene had existed two years ago, consistently exposing people to it both created new fans and brought people out from all over our very spread out metro area to see bands they never expected to see play in this town or in some cases, live at all. In other words if any of you want more live synthwav/terrorwave/whatevers in your town you need to befriend a bar/club owner that already likes the stuff or get them into it, hope they're the cool type of owner that will give a new thing a chance and allow it time to catch on, start reaching out to a lot of these dudes/acts/ladies which in itself is easier said than done, in my 2nd hand experience some of the most popular acts have no real desire for live shows or are loving terrible at communications and dont have "people" to talk to and set up with or those people when they do have them are equally amateur hour. Some are really cool and come out no problemo, I'm glad to say that yes Gost realizes how short his shows often are and feels really bad about it but thats the gimmick he went with and it limits the gently caress outta him in that way. man, what's with this scene's crossover with metal? just an accident of the 80s retro thing? Carpenter Brut and Perturbator and Gost, yeah, that's probably what metal would sound like if synthesized, but when I first heard West Side Lane or anything from Drive I didn't think "drat this would be a loving sick opener for a metal act" so i just think it's weird that's where a lot of support and coverage is coming from

Yeah there's a ridiculous amount of sports cars here, in an area where you're never going to be able to drive that fast and will probably have some idiot scratch or slam into you before you get to your destination anyway. Always get that extra insurance when renting!

Still worth doing though if you ever got a chance. It sucks getting all the way down Collins or Washington, but doing so at night in a convertible 'stang is worth going up Ocean Drive at least once in your life. Just steer clear of any vacation rentals at 5445 Collins Ave... not the most up-to-date. Good rates, though, and one heck of a lobby. Back to the music - apparently Revan Fette lives one town over from me, which is pretty neato. A buddy of mine does electroswing and synthpop DJ shows and visuals for local raves and electroswing scenes (because apparently there's such a thing, but then again, this is the NY Metro) and he made noise about getting a show together for an alternative dance club in Newark. Which would kinda own. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDBbaGCCIhk - Miami Nights 1984 - Accelerated This is what pulled me into synthwave/new retro wave. I got linked via a vaporwave version of a eurobeat song and you know how someone mentioned early on in the thread that this genre is like browsing through records? 100% this. I've been crawling through Bandcamp in my downtime at work and listening to a bunch of stuff. It really does fall anywhere in between the 80s-movie-soundtrack spectrum, and it's crazy how good some of this stuff really is. At least, to me. Instant Crush posted:so excited for perturbator in january!! Well for one thing the melodies in synthwave and a lot of metal are pretty similar, and for another synthwave does seem to fill a niche that goth/industrial/darkwave left open in its decline in popularity and artistic achievement since its 1990s heyday.
