Pan's and Blood Simple are blind buys but I've really liked all the del Toro and Coen movies I've seen so far, Zen is a total blind buy, and Raoul was suggested by my dad. Hoping to pick up Lone Wolf & Cub on tuesday too.

A Touch of Zen is a bit of a trip. It's like the first two hours are the best wuxia film you can watch, and then it becomes really bizarre for the last hour.

But I love it all. It's just hard to explain. Thematically, it all goes together, it's just building on the ideas found in the earlier portion.

I've already seen Inside Llewyn Davis twice but most Coen brothers movies are endlessly rewatchable and it has a metric ton of supplements.

Davis has really stellar supplements that enrich the movie so much by giving details on the historical context

I was going to order later this month, but went ahead and picked up Eraserhead, Blood Simple, and By Brakhage yesterday.

The "Shooting Blood Simple" feature is really good (I watched a few minutes), but I'm surprised by how the Coens and Sonnenfeld almost seem embarrassed by the film. :psyduck:

Both look fantastic. I rented the old MGM Blu-Ray a few months ago. It looked alright, but it didn't "pop" like this. The colors and sharpness are off the charts.

Eraserhead looked great on DVD, but this makes it look brand new. The sound is also incredible. It's listed as stereo, but it's encoded for Dolby Surround, too.

Yes, you can up convert things to 1080p, but the value becomes less and less.

So for UHD, even though there is upconversion happening, there's also support for HDR that's a huge part of the improvements people see with 4k.

Also, there is a world of difference in the quality, that just doesn't exist today. Remember, 1080p is good enough to project. Video both has really low resolution, and then the way it handles motion and the dynamic range for lighting gives it a very different look than film would.

So is there room for better encoding? Sure, but the difference is going to be wasted on the inherent weakness of the source. In all honesty, you're not going to get that much better results, just because DVD is still a decent platform for video.

So in short, yeah, I could put video based stuff on Blu-ray, but for what return?

The resolution of most stuff shot on video is standard definition, aka 480p, so while there would technically be a benefit from the extra bitrate or whatever, the most notable boost would probably be in the audio. The main thing would be the potential for HD supplements, I guess, and maybe more content on fewer discs but Tanner 88 is already one disc anyway. A glossier menu would be cool.

Yeah, pretty much the only things to gain would be better compression and higher bitrate audio. However, it's not as if you can't max out bitrate on a DVD or use PCM uncompressed sound for a fraction of the price of authoring a Blu-Ray.

The problem is that anything video-based from before the last decade or two is going to look meh no matter what. That's one reason why all the studios are slowly remastering their shows shot on film, but originally edited on tape. Even going back to the original video masters, you can only get as good as 80s or 90s telecine quality can be.

I do wonder if something like Beastie Boys Anthology could be remastered. The videos I've seen all look like they were shot on film, so it's possible they could go back and rebuild them in HD if the elements still exist. I'm positive many have already had this treatment since VEVO has a lot of music videos in true HD from before 2000.

I'm a huge fan of "Lone Wolf and Cub", but in honestly it's not a perfect series. I'd say the first three are fantastic, the other three vary a bit in their quality.
They are fun and entertaining movies to watch, they feature some insane over the top gore effects, and don't overstay their welcome (most are under 90 mins long).

Aside from that there was the interesting recut of the first two films into "Shogun Assassin" which were kind of a big deal in the underground cinema scene in the early 80s, and the popularity in the underground extended into bootleg VHS tapes and then bootleg DVDs (in the early 00s you couldn't go into a shady DVD shop in NYC without seeing a stack of Shogun Assassin DVDs). The movie's reputation was also built up due to it being heavily sampled in Wu-Tang member Gza's album "Liquid Swords" which is a very highly regarded rap album. "Shogun Assassin" is also included in the Criterion set, and though I feel it's not as good as the original movies, them including it is significant.

The Lone Wolf and Cub set is great so far. I've read a decent amount of the manga, but I didn't expect it to be so close to it. The first movie was probably the most brutal samurai movie I've ever seen. (Mostly seen Kurosawa's stuff and Zatoichi films) I'm less than two minutes into the second movie and he's already killed two dudes. This movie doesn't gently caress around.

Edit: I'm pretty sure what those women did to that ninja was a Mortal Kombat Fatality. :stare:
