The Lone Wolf and Cub set is great so far. I've read a decent amount of the manga, but I didn't expect it to be so close to it. The first movie was probably the most brutal samurai movie I've ever seen. (Mostly seen Kurosawa's stuff and Zatoichi films) I'm less than two minutes into the second movie and he's already killed two dudes. This movie doesn't gently caress around.

Edit: I'm pretty sure what those women did to that ninja was a Mortal Kombat Fatality. :stare:

Yeah, this is definitely my favorite Criterion in a long time. I love that surprise moment near the end of the first movie where he pulls all the staff-sword pieces off of the baby cart, and then immediately lops a guy's legs off.

Speaking of samurai sets, I've now emailed two separate Criterion folks about the issues with my Zatoichi set and gotten zero replies. Emailed mulvaney back in august, and orders@criterion three weeks ago. Who am I supposed to contact now?

I just want a functional set. :negative:

Just for kicks, here's a comprehensive list of films Criterion has not upgraded to Blu-Ray yet. Obviously, I'm omitting video-based stuff like Beastie Boys and Tanner '88. I'll note stuff as needed.

Also, I'm listing whatever I can find on Blu-Ray.com. Most likely, any releases outside the US, UK, and Australia will not be English-friendly. If you're all-region equipped, anything from Arrow Films, BFI, and Masters of Cinema is worth getting. Some titles are out of order because I'm going by when the last edition was released (i.e. Cleo from 5 to 7 is listed under the year the remastered DVD came out, not the original)

Boyhood
A Brighter Summer Day
The Kid

I've saw Boyhood when it was first released and I'm looking forward to watching it again. Although the technical story of it is definitely worth noting, I'm more impressed by the way Linklater conveys the way life changes and how people are formed in unexpected ways. Haven't seen any of the others but I'm familiar with the directors except for A Brighter Summer Day which is apparently four hours long? Wow.

Yeah. The miracle of Boyhood is that it transcends its gimmick to be an all around great movie. The gimmick is icing on the cake.

The Apu Trilogy got delivered today, but some corners and edges were ruined during transport. I've looked at B&Ns Return policy, but it isn't very clear about replacement. Anybody got experience with this? It looks like you can only contact them by phone, but I don't really want to call from Europe.

You can get a full refund through their online chat support. I bought Brazil from them a few years ago and it looked like a dog chewed the case up and a disc was missing. They just refund you the money or you can roll the dice for another set since they will not accept international returns.

It was released as a DVD in 2007, Blu-Ray in 2010, re-issued as dual format in 2014, then back to separate editions this month. Must be one of their biggest sellers since this means it's the fourth printing.
