Mindless self indulgence is SRS BIZNS
With WoD: Gypsy, the notion was to play off the "mysterious other, who knows thing" trope that you saw in various forms in some victorian horror, but also in things like Lovecraft (where its often immigrant Catholic groups). So in that vein, it makes sense that the splat is the crossover one; they're the people that know what the danger is and try to (usually futilely) warn the protagonist.

Of course what doesn't make sense is using a real world persecuted minority and giving them special blood powers. Even TSR was smart enough to make their gypsies not-Romani and try to keep them more as an archetype from classic literature than directly a real world people.

Well it's more that with most of the Old WW stuff it kept the metaphors as metaphors. Werewolf was an adolescent power fantasy where you were persecuted all your life for being angry and different and your entrance into the new world was usually a bloody one at the hands of your abusers, but it wasn't portrayed as some great positive thing, and keeping in control of your anger and rage is a lifelong struggle. Vampire is an extended rape and abuse metaphor but it's very careful to tread the line that Beast steps over and then pisses on.

Well, yes, but the title that he put forth to use instead of "Gypsy" (which is pretty damned racist) was "Opre Roma!" which translates to "Roma Arise".

Which sounds great until you remember that "Opre Roma!" was used as a rallying cry for Roma to organize politically. And knowing who Swedracula is and how he thinks the odds of it not being a game where you play as Roma anarchoactivists who seek to bring down the Gaje governments with your secret blood magyyks and morally superior genetic code is basically nil.

Solving all of life's problems through enhanced casting of Occam's Razor. Reward yourself with an imaginary chalice.

CHAPTER SIX: Part Three

Until the Ending of the World

Surprise kids, it’s Abrahamic Armageddon! Yes, it’s accurate to the Book of Revelations, but not the one you expected. No, it’s accurate to the original Book as written by Saint John. The original book was changed and edited over the years by the Church and general theological shenanigans. So when God reaches down and brings the damnation and resurrection, it’s quite a bit different than what everyone with an apocalypse hard-on didn’t expect. The world has become so full of sin that God has decided to start anew and let mankind punish itself. The faithful and worthy get brought up to Heaven and the rest are left on Earth. If you survive the End of Days by displaying goodness and compassion and charity, you earn yourself a ticket to Heaven.

The day after all the good people are Raptured, Israel is ground zero of the zombie apocalypse and the dead rise in the wake of the sun sweeping east. By the second day of the Rapture, the entire world is swarming with the undead. As it turns out, a pretty major mistranslation of a verb obscured the means of God’s wrath. It wasn’t that the dead would rise up and be judged, it was that the dead would rise up and judge the living. A person killed by a zombie has their soul freed to be judged and sent to Heaven or Hell or wherever is appropriate while the dead person gets up as a zombie. The only places safe from the dead are places of worship but even then too many sinners will undo the sanctity; the zombies are compelled to destroy everything that mankind has created (in addition to the living). The only people safe from the dead are the sufficiently faithful, but that only lasts as long as they don’t sin or not help others. There are still at least six years left of Armageddon and not everyone has been able to infer the truth of the situation yet.

Story Ideas:

Servants of the Light: You’re good people doing good things. Regardless of your belief system or background, this God is the avatar of all gods and is willing to save anyone who can prove they’re worthy of salvation. You can help other survivors or help sanctify land against the undead and help fight off the unjust and wicked survivors who would hurt others. Do enough good deeds and you’re guaranteed a ticket to Heaven…after you die. You still have to die. And the best way to die without it being a sin as at the hands of the zombies.

Servants of the Dark: Better to reign on Zombie Earth than kiss rear end and go to Heaven (even if God is probably going to wipe Earth clean anyway). You might be a regular bad person or you might actually be allied with the Devil, but you’re definitely an rear end in a top hat and you definitely want to drag others down with you. This is pretty much the only possible evil campaign in the book.

The Middle Path: You’re not a saint and you’re not a Satanist. You’re just some people who weren’t good enough for Heaven. You’re just trying to survive and figure out what’s going on while the faithful try to save you and the faithless try to screw you.

Dawn of the Zombie Lords

A decade after the zombie apocalypse came and refused to end, mankind had found a survivalist groove. A century later, the earth is under the thrall of the people who have figured out how to control the undead and they’re jerks. The first of the Zombie Lords was Lord Obatala, a man from the Caribbean with extreme willpower strong enough to force zombies to bend to his will. Nobody is really sure how this works, but it does. He took over Hispaniola and quickly turned his sights towards the United States and the rest of the Caribbean, attacking the shattered government with undead troops. Across the world, other Zombie Lords began to manifest their powers. Some of them are benevolent and use their powers to create safe zones, but then you have others like Count von Stults conquering most of Europe and the Lady of the Yellow Springs taking over most of China.

There are 36 Zombie Lords and they control most of the undead. Only Obatala has a write-up, so basically everything is up to the GM. One hundred years after the resurrection, there are 1.2 billion living humans and 7 billion undead. The Zombie Lords issue these sort of metaphysical, invisible seals/mental marks to the living and the dead, controlling the dead with the seals and protecting the living from the sealed dead. Zombie Lords can strip seals from enemy zombies, but it takes a bit of effort. They can control undead as long as they’re within line of sight and there’s no limit to how many they can control at one time. The dead are used as menial labor and grunts and everything more sophisticated requires the living. Those living are scared of losing their protection and of the other Zombie Lords.

So far there are no real rulers of the world. The Zombie Lords are chafing a bit against each other and occasionally they put together groups of zombies backed up with living soldiers equipped with artillery to fight each other. A lot of the wars have been stalemates, but occasionally overwhelming zombie strength has lead to one Lord falling and their land and undead being taken by the victor.

Story Ideas:

Servants of the Zombie Lord: You’re loyal to one of the Lords and have to do things for them. They can either be benevolent or tyrants and the missions can generally vary. The one the game recommends is being assigned to assassinate another Lord and escape before you’re killed by wild, rampaging undead.

On Their Own: The players are survivalists/isolationists living in a remote area free of Zombie Lord control. They have to fight off the undead and keep it all together and then things get worse when a nearby Zombie Lord finds out they’re out there when they destroy the Lord’s zombies dedicated to killing unaligned living. Do you attempt to protect your freedom, or do you move somewhere else or try and play other Lords against the one threatening you?

A New Lord Rises: One of the players is a nascent Zombie Lord with weak powers that will only get stronger with practice. The goal is to help the new Zombie Lord gain power and take on the world one way or another.

Rebirth Into Death

Good news, kids and Buddhists: reincarnation is real. The basis of reincarnation is that every living thing has life essence/a soul and when you die your essence flies free to something about to be born or just waits for an open spot. Thanks to evolution, more and more hosts become available and in the process some souls realized that they could evade reincarnation and stay in the afterlife. These souls ended up figuring out how to send lesser souls to which hosts and how to basically control the system. So they set themselves up as benevolent controllers of the reincarnation system, making sure that the good souls get the good host bodies and the bad souls aren't reborn in sentient bodies.

But then we start getting into Mage: The Awakening territory. The rulers of reincarnation do work together, but they argue and they struggle with one another for a few millennia. Then, to make things worse, some of the rulers figure out how to ascend to the true afterlife and refuse to share the info with the others. The rulers end up going to war and they abandon the reincarnation machine/the reincarnation dimension completely, leaving some of the older, weaker souls to make sure it runs. Unfortunately, these older souls don't really know how the whole system works, and this brings us to present day: the breakdown of the cycle of reincarnation.

The cause of the zombie apocalypse is the simple fact that the system of reincarnation has basically started putting souls back into dead bodies. Instead of being collected and assigned to a newborn home, a recently released soul is shunted into a nearby corpse. To make things worse, this is never your own body. If you die near a hospital, you're most likely waking up in the nearest corpse in a hospital bed while some other soul wakes up in your old body. If there's no other body nearby or if the line is too long, your soul will just end up in a lesser form of life until you die again (a fish, a cat, a squirrel). That's actually more of a blessing than it sounds because being reincarnated in a corpse isn't fun. For starters, you can't talk outside of telepathic communication with other resurrected. Your body isn't particularly coordinated well because you're not the original pilot. Finally, you have an overwhelming to eat human flesh on a daily basis...and this doesn't have to necessarily belong to a living person. Going into a starvation frenzy means that you can get by just as easily eating another zombie at the cost of intense disgust when the hunger fades. You have 10 hours after eating before you feel hungry again and after 5 more hours you can't tell friend from food. You also can't take a headshot.

Story Ideas: Really the main story idea is that you're all recently reincarnated zombies who have to balance survival with the need to feed. The resurrection breakdown hasn't outright caused the apocalypse or collapse of society; on the lower end of things it's incredibly disruptive, on the higher it's a global emergency and people are panicking. The players have to figure out what exactly they're going to do with their undead selves. Are they going to try and communicate what's going on (they can still write or type, just not speak)? Are they going to just kill everyone? Or maybe they'll band together in a zombie horde and start becoming a roving war-band of hungry undead.

Thoughts on the Deadworlds

Grave Impact is by far my favorite because I like the fact that it's possible to take Earth back from the undead, you just have to be cautious with your flamethrowers. I like the idea of that hot, dusty apocalypse. My least favorite is End of the World because it's designed to be a one-shot and it goes a little heavy on the Christianity. Really I just like how there's a wildly diverse spread of Deadworlds and it's only going to get bigger and weirder and in a good way.

d20 Conversion Rules

Ha ha I'm not dumb or suicidal enough to tackle this part of the book. Basically if you like your d20, there are rules for running AFMBE in d20. Want to know how the heck this works? Get the book yourself!

FINAL THOUGHTS

All Flesh Must Be Eaten is not a perfect RPG. It is, however, thoroughly enjoyable and at least a pretty solid system for a point-buy, dex-ruled system. I lost a little bit of steam near the end due to real life, but AFMBE will always be the game that drew me into alternative systems outside of d20/D&D/weird lazy homebrews and I will always go to bat for it.

And with the core book done, there's plenty more books to go. I'm sincerely considering going through the books in order because I enjoy the line and they're pretty digestible books. So if you're interested in me picking up another book, here are the options I have for you.

1: I go in order of the book line, which is what I'm leaning towards. That means that the next book would be ENTER THE ZOMBIE, the sourcebook for dual-wielding heroic bloodshed, kung fu and Wuxia. It's honestly a little bit funny to me that this is the second book they came up with, but it's still a pretty good book.

2: I cover whichever book you guys vote on, as seen here in this Straw Poll: http://www.strawpoll.me/11662964
I did not include either Book of Archetypes 1 or 2 because I am not sure they really have much of a leg to stand on, seeing as how they're really just a collection of premade character types.

Also if you're interested in some of the free products for All Flesh Must Be Eaten, I have links for you!

First we have the introductory demo kit which has quickstart rules and a bare bones plot about going on a road trip: http://www.edenstudios.net/images/afmbedemokit.pdf

Second we have The Waking Dead, which is an introductory adventure for players that is totally not based on The Walking Dead, you can't prove anything: http://www.edenstudios.net/WakingDeadFREE.pdf

I voted for Enter the Zombie, but all of them are awesome so I'd be happy to see your take on any of them to be honest. One of the best gaming convention sessions I was ever in was a Resident Evil flavored version of AFMBE set in the Mall of America. Creepy and stressful, and by the end, everybody died.

I got hooked on Unisystem from playing in a Witchcraft campaign. It's an amazingly robust system and the cinematic version is incredibly easy to teach to new players (the Essence and Endurance rules are definitely the weakest part of the main set).

The main differences in the two (Main and Cinematic) are...

1)No Essence system. Spell casting is handled by by a straight Difficulty check roll. However you have to spend a not insignificant amount of Quality points to buy the Sorcery Quality at 5 points per +1.

2)No Endurance System. This is based on movie and television heroes. Who gets tired in those unless it's plot related?

3) Reduced Skill List. This list is from the Buffy: the Vampire Slayer RPG
Acrobatics (Climbing, Jumping, Doing cool rear end moves to evade being hit)
Art (all kinds, includes music)
Computers
Crime (Stealth, Breaking and entering, Forgery, pickpocketing, climbing)
Doctor (First Aid, Trauma Medicine, Making a Demon Cyborg)
Driving (Cars, Motorcycles, Armored Fighting Vehicles)
Getting Medieval (Melee combat with weapons, Defense against melee combat, Also includes Crossbow, Throwing Knife, and Longbow use)
Gun Fu (Shooting things)
Influence (Persuasion, Charm, Political Clout
Knowledge (On any subject)
Kung Fu (Unarmed combat
Languages
Mr. Fix-It (Repair, Build Tech stuff)
Notice (Spot, Search, Listen, Smell)
Occultism (Spooky Magic knowledge. Used to cast Rituals and with the Sorcery Quality...real Spells)
Science (All kinds
Sports (Can be used for Unarmed Combat)
Wild Card (Can be chosen to handle anything the other skills don't cover...)

4)Simplified weapon damage. All weapons do fixed damage instead of a dice range.

5)Simplified Bad Guy stats. All enemies have a Muscle, Combat, and Brains stat that the GM can use when tracking to hit and defense and intelligence based checks when dealing with a horde of vampires or zombies or fishmen. It speeds up combats a lot.

6)Drama Points. This is the big one. Think of them as Possibilities like TORG uses but done righter. For example they are tracked separately and are awarded separately from Experience so the Player is never put into a point where they can either do something cool or thematic, but won't because they are sacrificing character advancement. Also 'White Hats' (the lowest rank of PCs) start with more and can buy them at half cost compared to 'Heroes' so they can use them like crazy allowing them to face much more powerful threats on a more even footing.
The abilities they can do are: Heroic Feat (+10 to the roll in question can be used retroactively), I Think I'm Okay (heal half all damage currently taken. Can be used immediately after damage is taken before the character falls down), Righteous Fury (useable once per game session +5 on all rolls for a single combat; and the two coolest ones...Plot Twist, and Back from the Dead.

Back from the Dead allows a character to not be dead permanently

BtVS RPG posted:

Coming back next season (campaign arc) costs one Drama Point (that means the player is going to need a new Cast Member until then). Returning for the next Episode (game session)costs five Drama Points. Bypassing death in the same Episode as one's demise costs 10 Drama Points. If lhe Cast Member did not have enough Drama Points to spend, she can pay in iinstallments-. All Drama Points she has now, and any Drama Points the character gets in later Episodes, until the debt is paid. Spending the points is not enough; the GM and the player need lo
work out the details behind the resurrection.
It really is a cinematic /comic book touch.

Plot Twist is my favorite though.

BtVS RPG posted:

Once per game session, each character can spend a Drama Point and get a 'break' or change an aspect of the story. This is not a Get Out of Jail Free Card. If the heroine stupidly walked into a vampires' lair and she is surrounded by a horde of bloodsuckers, a Plot Twist won't allow her to escape unscathed. The vampires might decide lo keep her alive, however (after beating her soundly to get some thrills}, and her friends might somehow realize where she is and come lo her rescue. By the same token, sometimes clues are available, but they cannot be found
and the GM can decide that a particular plot twist is not possible at this time. If that is the case the Player gets the Drama Point back.
I have seen Plot Twist used to save characters, allow characters to die stupendously heroically, find information, hide information, open a safe, allow a surprise round and all sorts of things. It is a fun mechanic.

But seriously AFMBE is a real good 'generic' horror system and I have had many excellent times with it. Even that British Victorian Fantasy game I ran? Directly inspired by a deadworld on their website where Jack The Ripper turns out to be the first evidence of an oncoming zombie rise (the dismemberment and things are actually terrified citizens defending themselves and being too afraid to report it to the police because who the hell would believe them?) and the PCs were meant to be Worlds' Greatest Detectives and scientists and lower class workers slowly trying to unravel the mystery before infection hit critical mass.

Deadworlds are great as inspirations, too.

I don't wanna I don't wanna I don't wanna I don't wanna!!!

Who's ready for some motherfuckin' anime?

So in the early 2000s, Wizards of the Coast had a pretty good thing on their hands with Dungeons & Dragons 3.5th Edition. Pretty much the most popular edition of the system to date, Wizards decided to diversify a bit more by licensing out the d20 system used in 3.5e to anybody who wanted to make supplementary material for it. Hooraaaaay~! So in 2004, a Canadian company called Guardians of Order looks at a fantasy anime series from the 90s and says, "Hey, let's do this." So Slayers d20 was born!

Like I said, Slayers d20 is a supplement to the popular d20 system based on the popular Slayers anime series. It focuses heavily on recreating the feel of the source material in the system, providing new races, new and reworked classes, and a completely redone magic system. There are also pointers in place for emphasizing comedy in your stories and roleplay. The book went out of print in about 2007 when the rights to the Slayers anime series were transferred from Central Park Media to Funimation, who declined to renew the license with Guardians of Order. While I've never gotten the chance to play Slayers d20 myself to judge whether it's a good system or not, I feel like it's an interesting enough piece of tabletop literature for us to take a closer look at and maybe judge for ourselves.

However, I feel like before we dive right into the book itself, we should talk about the source material for juuuust a bit.

Slayers is an anime series that aired for three seasons from 1996-1998 and two additional seasons in 2008-2009 based on the light novel series by Hajima Kanzaka. It follows the sorceress Lina Inverse, along with her companions, the dimwitted swordsman Gourry, the hero of justice Amelia, and brooding shaman Zelgadis, as they fight ancient gods and monsters, sass the heck out of the world they live in, and most importantly, try to scrounge up enough cash for dinner at that nice steakhouse in Atlas City. It's basically the pure ideal of a game of D&D with friends blended with the epitome of 90s anime and I loving love it and it's the perfect candidate for a tabletop game. So hey, let's see how well they did when we actually crack open the book next time!

On the next episode: Let's Get Started! Introducing You To Slayers!

It's interesting how aware Guardians of Order was of the spellcaster dominance issue relatively early into d20... but they're still never that great at fixing it.

Also, it's worth noting that GoO "spurned" the Slayers fan community, trying to seek out authors that didn't actually know much about the series to avoid "contaminating" it with material from outside of their license (because there was so, so much of it). At least, that's how the scuttlebutt went at the time when I was demoing for GoO.

I don't wanna I don't wanna I don't wanna I don't wanna!!!

Yes, it's important to note that Guardians of Order's license was strictly the three TV seasons that had aired at the time and not the OVAs, movies, or novels. So no Naga here, friends.

Slayers is pretty close to Wizard Supremacy: the Setting IIRC.

Fun Slayers fact: Fox Kids actually acquired the broadcast rights to Slayers, but declined to air it due to the amount of content changes required. (In reality, they had simply bought the rights to cut off Toonami, who had expressed an interest in the series themselves.)

Hey, they don't have the rights to Naga, so Gourry has to occasionally do things still.

Spewing insults, pissing off all your neighbors, betraying your allies, backing out of treaties and accords, and generally screwing over the global environment?
ALL PART OF MY BRILLIANT STRATEGY!
You know, browsing through the Deluxe version of Godbound, I'm struck by how much of the extra content is devoted to: "Hi, we're gonna do Exalted, but better." It's cool, but also hilarious, that they're literally replicating Dragonblooded, Sidereals, Lunars and Solars, right down to having five "splats" for their totally-not-Solars, and optional special rules for anima banners and something suspiciously similar to Exalted virtue rules. What really strikes me, though, is how much better the Godbound not-Sidereals are done.

I can't remember if the review ever pointed that out.

RE: Slayers D20. I played that once, years ago, I remember it... more or less fondly? Though I'm not sure if that was more down to the group or the system.

Operation complete.
I remember finding that Slayers d20 book years ago, always wanted to give it a try but never had the chance to, so I'm looking forward to this review.

Well, mostly I'm thinking of the commentary in BESM d20 that basically says "spellcasters are busted" and converts them into their system... where they're largely still busted, just... they have fewer spell slots.

Yeah, licensing gave us some odd GoO books, like a Dominion Tank Police game based solely on the (first) anime, a Tenchi Universe supplement for the likely zero people looking to play a game based on the TV series, and Demon City Shinjuku.

If you're in hell and have to play a Tenchi game, Universe is probably your best chance at surviving the experience with only minor PTSD.
