Hey I don't mean to be a downer but can we please not post the videos and pictures of polar bears "playing" with dogs? It's all from the same area and I've heard some lovely stuff about how those dogs are treated and how their owner "stages" those videos.

Dear Cute and Uplifting Thread,
I got some news this morning that one of my dear friends has been diagnosed with leukemia. She and her daughter just about helped raise me, and when I was in high school I babysat her twin grandchildren. When the bullying in school got too bad for me, I would (selfishly) cut class and walk to her house right next door where she fed me and would talk me through my low times until I felt better enough to return to school or go home. She would let me take care of her pets and taught me how to make the best pumpkin bread. Now she's in Seattle with her husband to get the care she needs. I've been down for the entire day and I'm so angry.

Please share your photos and stories of your dear friends/family/pets. Leave no detail out about how much they might have helped you and what they mean to you.

My niece is a real Shakespearean actor at the age of eleven (Her most recent role was in San Francisco Shakespeare Festival's Shakespeare in the Park production of A Winter's Tale as Mamillius). Like I said she is a legit real Shakespearean actor. I used to perform with American Player's Theater back in the early 80s so her going into something I absolutely adore makes me so happy. Her mom and dad like Shakespeare, but they don't love it like we do so she is always calling on me to run lines with her discuss blocking and the like. Because of that, and as I am basically retired now, I've started auditioning again and if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be doing it.

Here she is, 'Exiting being pursued by a bear...' at the California Statehouse.

Ms Boods posted:

When I was a kid, my sister who in general has no redeeming features, rescued a dog that was in a similar condition (and disposion despite the neglect). People who rented a trailer from the folks opposite our house had got a poodle for their 3 year old, to teach the child responsibility. She was given exclusive care over this dog. It was as grown out, matty, and emaciated as you might imagine -- sometimes it would break free of its rope and end up in our yard, sleeping in my dog's bed or playing in our yard with my dog's toys. It was really, really affectionate. One of the times when it escaped, my sister was over, and was shocked at the condition of the dog (and that my dad would not do anything about it -- he was one of those 'well, dogs take their chances person', or, as they are more formally known, a dickhead).

Anyway, she went over to their house and offered to take the dog for free since they weren't interested in it. Oh no! Said the dad. That's our little girl's dog. It's her responsibility.

My sister gave up after a while, but the next time she was over, she went back to their house and offered them $100 for the dog (this was around 1975 or so. She wasn't going to gently caress around and figured daddy would sell the kid for $100).

She got the dog all cleaned up, and turned out it was a he -- dog lived like a spoiled king the rest of his life, really good natured and funny as hell (he learned to ride my nephew's boogie board down the beach).

One of my best cats was one I took in from a neglectful neighbour. Mr Nuts practically lived at my house anyway, and when they moved away and left him behind, well yeah. They came back a week later to finish cleaning up the house and the wife demanded him back. The husband had the grace to look embarrassed when I quarreled with her, then Mr Nuts came wandering up the street. The husband said, 'Well, you each call him, and whoever he goes to, he belongs to.' She started calling and cajoling him. I said, 'Nuts, get your arse over here.'

I like stories of people who rescue pets (even though I still think my sister is a tosser of the highest order).

Nope, they're resolved as I've cut them out of my life, and have been a much happier person for it.

But what's MORE important is that I clicked that link to the samurai with his cat, scrolled down to look at the other pictures, and saw that it's time to re-post this wonderful video:
